English
An experiment in which a robot was used to transport apples was conducted in a field in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture.
Explanation
Fields that are used to cultivate vegetables, fruits, assorted grains, flowers and so forth are called 「畑(hatake)」. When we use a modifier that describes the type of field, it’s pronounced 「ばたけ(batake)」. For example, a potato field is 「ジャガイモばたけ(jagaimo-batake)」.
In Japanese, paddy fields in particular are called 「田んぼ(tanbo)」 or 「田(ta)」. Paddy fields are irrigated with water and are mainly used to grow rice.
「実験(jikken)」 means “experiment.” It’s the process of testing a hypothesis to see if it’s right. The experiment in our news story was a proof-of-concept to see if this apple-transporting robot could actually be useful to farmers who are struggling because of a shortage of workers.
When developing a product, running repeated 「実験」 helps the developer to verify and refine their ideas.
A similar but subtly different word is 「試験(shiken)」, which refers to a “test of ability.” When a product reaches the stage where the developer wants to make sure that it functions as designed, it runs 「試験」.

The robot was built by a company in Miyagi Prefecture. It utilizes technology from a vehicle built by NASA to move across the surface of the moon and study it. It can even move around in fields made uneven by rocks and dirt.

According to the company, the robot is able to drive autonomously and carry the basket to a warehouse. The company plans to rent the robot out to farmers starting next April.

An apple farmer said, “We are struggling due to a constant shortage of workers, so a robot that automatically transports apples would be great.”
Explanation
「自動(jidoo)」 means “automatic.” It’s a word we use to describe things that are self-propelled or able to operate independently of human control. So there’s 「自動車(jidoosha)」 automobile, 「自動ドア(jidoo-doa)」 automatic door, and 「自動販売機(jidoo-hanbaiki)」 vending machine.

Yesterday, I saw a news story about care robots. They were singing and talking to elderly people—it was really amazing.
Explanation
Sophia starts the conversation by saying she saw a news story yesterday and then shares her thoughts about it. When starting a conversation, you can use the expression 「S(sentence)のを見たんですけど、~」. In cases where you use a noun, the expression is 「ニュースを見た」. But in cases like in the dialogue, 「ニュースで介護ロボットについてやっていた」, where it is expressed as a passive, you say 「のを見た」. A plain form verb is used before 「のを見た」.
田中:ああ、僕も見たよ。お年寄りに、「何々さん、部屋に戻ってください。」って声かけしてたね。でも、なんか、ちょっと考えちゃったなあ。

Oh, I saw that, too. The robots were talking to the elderly people like “Ms. so-and-so, please go back to your room.” But it kind of made me think.
ソフィア:どうしてですか?人手不足の解消にはなると思いましたけど。

Why? I thought it could help solve the labor shortage.
田中:うん、人件費がかからないとか、メリットもあるとは思うけどね、なんか機械的な感じがしてね。自分の親を任せたいかというと、ちょっとね…。

English
Yeah, I know there are benefits, like no labor costs. But it felt so mechanical. I don’t know if I would want to entrust my parents to them…
ソフィア:ああ、確かに、自分の親を任せることを考えると、そう思うかもしれませんね。

English
I see, certainly, if you think about your own parents, you may feel like that way.
Explanation
After listening to Tanaka-san’s opinion on care robots, Sophia expresses her understanding of his view. By using the word 「確かに」 at the beginning of the sentence, it indicates that what was said is certainly true.
ソフィア:もう少し、人間に近い姿になれば、少しは違うのかなあ。
