Sumo wrestling's roots stretch back over a millennium. Today this iconic, traditional sport comprises not only the familiar professional format of Grand Sumo, but also amateur and university-level competitions that have dedicated fan followings of their own. University students compete yearly for the title of "Student Yokozuna" or Grand Champion. Many of these student wrestling champions go on to enjoy a successful pro career, former wrestler Mainoumi being a famous example. He speaks to us about the enduring role of student sumo as we review the current crop of promising young wrestlers.
