Writing boxes are designed to hold stationery equipment. The Writing Box with Eight Bridges was designed in the early 18th century by Ogata Korin, who is known for his screen paintings. Gold and abalone shell depicts Japanese irises blossoming by the water's edge. It illustrates a traditional scene from the literary work "The Tale of Ise," as its bold structure shows Korin's ambition to grow beyond the bounds of tradition.
