Stories about people, stories about life.

00:08

Hometown Stories.

00:20

Look, look, look.

00:23

What pretty flowers.

00:25

Do you see them?

00:27

This one looks like an eyeball wearing colored contacts.

00:33

Today we're featuring hiking guide Okawa Miki.

00:37

Most people call her by her nickname "Mikitty."

00:41

It's the fruit of the skeleton flower.

00:43

Good job finding it.

00:47

She has clients from all over Japan and is completely booked for the coming year.

00:57

Always smiling and positive. That's the Mikitty magic.

01:00

It's why I've traveled so far to see her.

01:05

Life has been so much fun ever since I began hiking with Miki.

01:12

Miki is usually bright and friendly, but there's another side to her too.

01:21

It's a miracle that I can smile now.

01:27

For a long time, I couldn't.

01:34

Miki's hiking excursions spread joy and laughter.

01:40

Let's take a closer look at a woman who creates connections in Japan's beautiful mountains.

01:58

Today's story takes us to the mountains of Tohoku, in northern Japan.

02:11

We'll be hiking up Mt. Iwate tomorrow,

02:19

so I'm going to buy some food to eat there.

02:24

Miki has been a hiking guide for a decade.

02:42

She always puts her clients first.

02:45

She asks them what they want to eat and prepares it for them during the hike.

02:56

Getting rewarded with delicious food makes everyone smile.

03:05

Cold weather is forecast for the following day, so she plans a warming menu.

03:13

I want to treat them to udon noodles and delicious meat tomorrow,

03:16

so that I can make them smile. And I can smile, too.

03:22

Miki is finding it difficult not to overpack.

03:30

How heavy is it going to be?

03:32

I'll be in trouble tomorrow.

03:35

Is this going to be enough?

03:37

I'll get another one.

03:40

Food is important.

03:43

Let's take some herbs.

03:47

OK, I'm done.

04:03

The climb up takes about three and a half hours,

04:07

but let's go slowly.

04:10

We're all carrying heavy packs.

04:13

On this day, she will be guiding a repeat client who lives far away, along with her first-timer friend.

04:22

The day has finally come for me to fulfill my dream.

04:29

This woman has been looking after her elderly mother.

04:33

She comes to Miki to rejuvenate herself.

04:40

Give it your best, Kyo.

04:41

- You too, Jun.
- Let's do it.

04:47

Miki's backpack looks so heavy.

04:50

She must have packed so many supplies for our dinner.

05:01

We'll get there step by step.

05:04

All it takes is effort.

05:06

Climbing mountains is like life.

05:09

Great point.

05:16

Five hours into their hike...

05:29

...the weather takes a turn for the worse.

05:39

I brought smoked pickles.

05:42

Miki always makes a point to talk to her clients as though they were old friends.

05:48

I also brought smoked eggs.

05:55

For everyone.

05:59

Are you alright?

06:00

C'mon, Kyo!

06:02

- I'm going to climb.
- Can you do it?

06:08

Nice, very good.

06:14

Mt. Iwate is keeping us on our toes.

06:17

You're right, Jun.

06:20

Always smiling and positive.

06:26

That's the Mikitty magic.

06:29

Of course, hiking brings me joy,

06:32

but not as much as Miki does.

06:36

That's why I came so far to see her.

06:40

Are you two alright? Getting tired?

06:43

We're fine.

06:48

I can see the hut.

06:52

Your eyes are lighting up.

06:55

You're right, it's the hut.

06:59

It's been six hours since they started.

07:02

They are finally at their destination for the day.

07:06

We did it.

07:08

We did it.

07:13

Ready.

07:19

It's so delicious and crunchy.

07:21

I think so too.

07:24

Let's dig in.

07:26

Bon appetit, or cheers?

07:29

Cheers.

07:33

Delicious.

07:35

Really warms you up.

07:41

The mushrooms are perfect here.

07:46

I've already forgotten all the hardships we went through.

07:50

Thanks to this food.

07:52

Agreed.

07:53

I've forgotten how hard the climb was.

07:57

The meat, sausages, and udon noodles cleared up my head.

08:03

All gone.

08:05

I feel great.

08:09

I really want my clients to enjoy themselves.

08:12

I love hearing them say how much fun they had, or how glad they are to be here.

08:18

That's what brings me joy.

08:32

Miki lives in Akita Prefecture.

08:35

She guides more than 1,000 people a year.

08:38

So in peak season, she goes to the mountains almost every day.

08:48

Her children have left the nest, and she lives with her husband Hiroto.

08:58

In winter, when she can't go hiking, she keeps saying how much she wants to.

09:04

It's non-stop.

09:07

I can't believe how much she loves the mountains.

09:11

As soon as she's back, she's getting ready for the next hike.

09:16

That's all she thinks about when she's home.

09:20

She stays pretty busy.

09:23

She does it because she enjoys it.

09:28

Before you know it, she's off on her next hike.

09:34

Miki used to work in tourism.

09:37

Then a series of events led her to her current way of life.

09:46

This is when she was hospitalized.

09:51

At age 9, her daughter Chisato was hospitalized after being diagnosed with leukemia.

09:58

She was given three years to live.

10:06

She could have died at any time.

10:13

I didn't want to see or talk to anyone.

10:17

I was filled with resentment and cynicism.

10:23

I was an unpleasant person and just stayed holed up.

10:30

Right around that time, a childhood friend took her on a hike to local mountain.

10:39

I told her there was no way I could do it. I couldn't hike.

10:49

But it was so wonderful to be in a primeval beech forest.

10:56

I realized that it was the kind of place that could calm my heart.

11:07

I considered committing suicide if my daughter died.

11:11

I was full of dark, negative thoughts.

11:15

But while I was hiking, those thoughts just disappeared from my mind.

11:27

Miki took her daughter hiking once she got better.

11:37

My daughter did her best to make it up there.

11:39

At the summit, we made a pledge to people battling disease.

11:46

We waved our hands and shouted,

11:49

"All of you can stand here when you recover."

11:57

She had a big smile on her face while she was shouting.

12:00

I realized that mountains can make people smile.

12:07

That's what inspired me to become a guide.

12:16

I'm so glad it's not raining.

12:20

We're so lucky. It's beautiful.

12:27

Ever since becoming a guide, she has taken more than 10,000 people hiking.

12:33

But, sometimes, she goes climbing with a friend.

12:39

I seldom let my guard down,
but I can when it's just the two of us.

12:48

That's true.

12:51

It's magnificent.

12:54

Now she can open up about her concerns for her daughter.

13:01

Show me how excited you are.

13:04

Thank you, dear sun.

13:08

I am human after all.

13:10

I tend to feel blue, I cry,

13:15

I go through hard times.

13:20

But now I have friends that I've met through hiking.

13:27

I can reach out to them and ask them for support.

13:35

I'm a different person than I was before I started hiking.

13:59

Miki and her daughter Chisato are at the hospital for a check-up.

14:09

Chisato is in her mid-twenties and the mother of two children.

14:21

She is at the same pediatrician's office where she used to get treated for leukemia.

14:33

I'm seeing a pediatrician at my age.

14:37

That's true.

14:40

Your white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets are all fine.

14:46

Nothing unusual.

14:51

Cancer drugs are sometimes said to be related to fertility problems,

14:56

so I'm glad it worked out for you.

15:02

Two kids.

15:04

Thank you for making her so healthy.

15:12

It has been 16 years since Chisato was diagnosed with leukemia.

15:20

It's a miracle we can smile now.

15:25

I'm grateful that we can smile in good health.

15:30

There are so many who can't.

15:35

I hope to be able to make it up to them in some way.

15:46

Looking forward to today.

15:51

You can step there.

15:56

Miki has recently started inviting a friend on her hikes.

16:02

Awesome.

16:07

Michiko is really into hiking now.

16:12

She's even started training for it.

16:16

I work out.

16:21

Her name is Uemura Michiko.

16:27

I'll join you after I take a photo.

16:31

Did you get a good shot?

16:33

I think so.

16:36

You took a nice photo?

16:49

Michiko's husband Naoto had passed away the previous year.

17:03

Naoto was her source of joy and support when things got difficult.

17:08

He was the one who introduced Miki to Michiko.

17:15

He always made me feel at ease.

17:19

I felt showered with love.

17:24

Without him, I felt uneasy and so sad.

17:30

After he passed, I became reclusive and rarely talked to anyone.

17:38

Six months after Naoto's death, she began receiving invitations to go hiking from Miki.

17:48

"Good morning, Michiko. I'm not sure if you can make it, but you're welcome to join me."

17:57

"Michiko. Please come if you can make it."

18:03

"I'm sure you can do it. We'll go slowly."

18:10

At first, I felt I could just ignore the messages, and not go.

18:17

But Miki persisted, so I decided to join her.

18:27

I guessed she wasn't eating much, so I used to take food for her.

18:33

Michiko seemed sad, but she told me she couldn't cry.

18:39

I wanted hiking to give her one small reason to be happy.

18:52

This is Michiko's second hike with Miki since her husband passed.

18:57

Look, so many of them.

19:00

No way. This is amazing.

19:03

I've never seen so many of them at once.

19:07

The name "ginryoso" uses the characters for silver, dragon, and grass.

19:13

Doesn't it look like a silver dragon?

19:18

If you pull it up, it looks like an eyeball.

19:22

This one looks like an eyeball wearing colored contacts.

19:26

I want to take a photo.

19:28

Look, look, look.

19:32

What pretty flowers!

19:35

- What are they?
- Shokiran orchids.

19:38

Take a look.

19:42

So adorable.

19:43

Michiko, take a photo with your phone.

19:47

Let's try taking one without the hands, like this.

19:51

Nice.

19:54

I'll press it.

19:58

Thank you.

20:02

Miki takes them to a special tree.

20:07

Amazing.

20:11

I've nicknamed this the Mikitty Tree.

20:16

This giant beech is over 200 years old.

20:24

Small branches are growing densely around the trunk.

20:31

It looks like a mother cradling her child.

20:37

It reminds me of my children. They're adults now.

20:41

But I used to hold them like this, especially my sick daughter.

20:47

I was always cradling her back then.

20:51

It was my way of making her feel safe and protected.

20:56

That's why this tree reminds me of myself.

21:00

It tells me I need to be strong. I shouldn't waver.

21:07

I want to be a presence just like this tree.

21:13

This tree embodies my ideal, the qualities that I admire.

21:22

It's so impressive.

21:28

Miki really is like that tree. It shows a motherly love.

21:33

It represents the enormous well of love that Miki has.

21:36

We've all felt it without even realizing.

21:49

Going on these hikes, I feel better thanks to the power of nature.

21:57

And it's important who you share that experience with.

22:03

The people I went with were so kind and warm.

22:11

Those qualities have given me joy.

22:20

I'm so glad that Miki has helped me create new bonds.

22:28

I owe her so much.

22:35

Thank you.

22:40

I feel the same way about you.

22:45

Laughter and tears.

22:53

Miki's hiking excursions connect hearts.

23:19

This couple is visiting from a distant prefecture.

23:29

They are celebrating the wife’s birthday.

23:34

Take a look.

23:37

- It's nice.
- Very nice, blue sky.

23:40

See?

23:42

Lovely photo.

23:50

Oh, it's Michiko.

23:51

She's my friend.

23:55

Michiko was out hiking on her own on this day.

24:00

This is the best time of my life.

24:04

Stop, you'll make me cry.

24:08

I've met so many people through Miki.

24:14

I'm enjoying my life now.

24:17

I'm tearing up.

24:21

Ten years from now, or possibly even twenty,

24:26

I want to keep hiking with people.

24:29

It would make me incredibly happy.

24:55

Amazing, isn't it?
