"My name is Number 12."

00:08

"I'm a monster."

00:11

"I'll have your head."

00:17

"To create an ideal world."

00:21

- Ideal?
- Yeah.

00:25

Freely manipulating paper, this young man has given shape to his wildest imaginings.

00:35

"Art Brut" refers to works of art created according to the artist's impulses,

00:41

not influenced by traditions or education.

00:46

Many of these artists have intellectual and mental health disabilities,

00:51

and their work rarely makes it into the outside world.

00:58

In Japan, these artists have been creating in obscurity, at home or in social services centers.

01:07

This is a record of the daily existence and life of artists

01:11

who produce one-of-a-kind creative works.

01:20

"no art, no life."

01:27

Mikuni in Fukui is a port town facing the Sea of Japan.

01:35

Thank you for today.

01:38

Thanks for your cooperation.

01:40

Someone appears with a load of art supplies,

01:44

it's Muratakun; real name, Murata Shogo.

01:50

Once a month he does an artmaking demonstration at a local folk music instrument shop.

01:59

Morning!

02:01

After arriving, he follows a certain routine.

02:12

He always tidies up the desk.

02:16

When he does his art demonstration here,

02:19

the area around him is super neat.

02:23

He's really obsessive about it.

02:27

Got something to wipe the desk?

02:30

It's sticky.

02:31

Sticky?

02:35

- Cool!
- That's new.

02:38

Cat Zero.

02:44

Hands are amazing.

02:47

They move.

02:51

It's a cyborg - a killer with weapons.

02:55

You come up with wild ideas.

02:59

A work he's spent a month on is nearly finished.

03:08

What part is that?

03:10

Inside the stomach.

03:14

What'll it be?

03:15

A chip.

03:16

Chip?

03:18

An intestinal circuit.

03:21

Because it's a robot.

03:23

No, it's a cyborg.

03:27

Every single one of Muratakun's creations has a different structure and character.

03:36

Finished!

03:40

Finished?

03:42

Amazing.

03:45

Today, a new cyborg has been born.

03:54

Since two years ago, Muratakun's work has been on permanent display.

04:03

Scattered about the shop are his original characters and those from popular anime.

04:16

Customers who wandered in are amazed.

04:21

If you take off the armor,
a bikini-girl pops out.

04:25

Amazing!

04:30

Wow.

04:32

Look at that.

04:34

I made 50 Spidermans.

04:38

I like these cats.

04:42

Someday human bodies
will become mechanical.

04:46

Really?

04:48

I want a body that
will last for 300 years.

04:55

These are the Cat Rangers - cats that died by accident or illness

05:01

and were brought back to life as cyborgs by Muratakun.

05:07

And this is the newest cyborg - Cat Zero.

05:12

Cat Zero seemed to be a reliable new member, but it's an enemy!

05:23

Can the Cat Rangers defeat their toughest opponent yet?

05:39

In Muratakun's world, the superhero doesn't always win.

05:49

Most of his works have been made at home, out of the public eye.

05:55

- It's hot.
- It is!

05:57

Thanks for having us.

05:58

Please come in.

06:11

When did he begin creating?

06:13

Maybe 3rd grade
of elementary school.

06:19

We just threw them in boxes,

06:23

and saved them all.

06:27

He's created over two thousand works up until now.

06:33

That big box is filled
with his earliest work,

06:36

from elementary school.

06:43

His teacher back then
was careful to make sure,

06:47

he had time to do art,

06:52

at school.

06:54

Schoolwork was important,

06:57

but it was vital he
could do art as well.

07:01

His teacher let him do art.

07:04

And from then, his work evolved,

07:07

gradually, leading up to today.

07:13

It's a blueprint.

07:16

One robot is built from this.

07:19

It's an expanded diagram.

07:23

In his mind he's already
built the robot.

07:26

You see the final robot
when you draw it?

07:30

Yep, if it goes well.

07:34

The paper he uses for his work comes from calendars.

07:39

The diagram becomes the parts for a robot or cyborg.

07:48

He is trying to achieve a human-like body.

07:55

This is...

07:56

Here.

07:57

This part is here.

07:59

I see.

08:01

This square box here, is the hand.

08:07

So it flies well.

08:10

But the one thing
I can't make...

08:14

I can't make a smile.

08:18

The challenge is to
create facial expressions.

08:24

Can I make emotions?

08:30

Emotions...

08:35

A little creepy?

08:38

I want to become an android.

08:44

What do you think Mr. Uu?

08:46

What do you think?

08:51

Mr. Uu.

08:51

His name is Murata Uu.

08:54

He is like another version of me.

08:58

He's like my shadow.

09:04

Why did you make your alter ego?

09:09

I wanted someone to talk to.

09:11

That version of me is talented
and popular with girls.

09:17

- Mr. Uu is more popular?
- Yeah.

09:20

"Because I'm perfect."

09:23

"Unlike you, I can read."

09:26

"I can speak foreign languages."

09:32

Mr. Uu is Muratakun's ideal.

09:38

In that world, he meets a beautiful woman and falls in love.

09:54

I'm at the age when
I want a girlfriend.

10:01

My cousin's getting married.

10:06

Elementary school friends
are marrying too.

10:11

I compare myself.

10:13

I'll never change, an artmaking fool.

10:19

I can make anything,
but girls don't think it's cool.

10:25

Other people become happy.

10:28

All I can do is make these things.

10:34

Even if I spend time
with these creations,

10:38

they don't give anything back.

10:42

That's the most painful thing for me.

10:47

Check it out, the face!

10:49

Great.

10:52

I want to add teeth,
but that would be creepy.

10:59

Have a good time.

11:01

Muratakun attends a local social services center five days a week.

11:10

The members are people with intellectual and mental-health disabilities.

11:20

Together with farmers and volunteers, they work at a store selling local vegetables and food.

11:30

Muratakun is in charge of the morning's first cleaning.

11:39

Wipe it off,
then take it out.

11:41

Put it in the bag.

11:43

When he first started to attend, a year earlier,

11:47

he didn't listen to instructions and did whatever he liked.

11:55

Now, even though he doesn't respond to people, he seems to enjoy himself.

12:04

He has one other important job.

12:07

Creating the store displays.

12:17

- I made those stuffed animals.
- Which ones?

12:21

These cute blue bears were created on a sewing machine by Muratakun,

12:27

using old headbands he didn't want to see wasted.

12:34

He also collaborates with other members.

12:40

They glue colored eggshells onto Muratakun's drawing,

12:44

or color with colored pencils.

12:53

How did it go?

12:55

Pretty.

12:57

It's fun.

13:06

I used to think,

13:08

I don't need friends.

13:14

But, as I get older,

13:18

I wish I had friends.

13:23

I could say,
"Congratulations!"

13:27

"Let's go to the beach!"

13:31

That's starting to sound good.

13:42

Someday, I want to be like Mr. Uu.

14:23

Muratakun - no art, no life.

14:43

OK, it's finished.

14:46

It's done?

14:52

"You finally finished?"

14:54

"That's right!"
