00:03

Hoshino Rene is a manga creator.

00:06

He came to Japan at age four following his Cameroonian mother's remarriage to his Japanese stepfather.

00:15

The change required him to take on an entirely different language and culture.

00:23

Using a humorous touch, he creates manga stories that portray the cultural differences and preconceived ideas he encountered growing up in Japan.

00:33

I was born in Africa and grew up in Japan.

00:36

There are people like me, but we tend to
be lumped up as foreigners.

00:41

There are all sorts of people in Japan,
And I want to share that in a positive way.

00:51

In this program, we follow Rene as he visits foreign children living in Japan.

00:59

Getting to know them, he puts their struggles and dreams into manga.

01:08

This time, Rene meets a high school student from Peru.

01:14

Soon to graduate, he wants to discuss his career path with Rene.

01:23

The two bond over shared interests.

01:26

- Then it ends with a three-pointer.
- You're changing the rules, aren't you?

01:34

What sort of manga will they produce?

01:40

"Rene Goes to School!"

01:48

Rene visits Nagoya City.

01:54

He came in response to a certain letter.

01:58

It read,

02:01

I have this dream.

02:03

After graduating high school, I want to get a job as a nursing care worker.

02:11

I want to make a difference in Japan like you are and encourage other foreigners living in Japan.

02:22

Rene makes his way to the sender's school.

02:25

This is it.
The school must be in here.

02:34

The Japanese language school is operated by the NAGOYA INTERNATIONAL CENTER.

02:41

I can already feel the energy.

02:45

The school is open every Sunday and has classes for every age group.

02:52

- Hello. What are you doing?
- A card game.

03:01

The classes are taught by volunteer teachers.

03:07

About 120 people from over 20 countries and regions attend the school.

03:15

Rene searches for the high schooler who sent him the letter.

03:21

There are so many nationalities.

03:24

Is Hideki here?

03:26

Hideki? Hi! Hideki!

03:33

Nice to meet you. You sent me the letter.

03:37

- Yes.
- You're a good-looking guy.

03:43

Heshike Hideki is eighteen and from Peru.

03:52

He enjoys reading Rene's manga.

03:55

- I have it here.
- You do? Let me see.

03:58

He shows Rene his favorite chapter.

04:05

It's the popular lunch box story.

04:10

Rene's lunch always attracted a good deal of attention from his classmates.

04:18

As a young teenager, Rene was self-conscious of the fact that his lunches were different.

04:25

This day's menu was African-style!

04:29

While everyone used chopsticks,

04:32

I was dipping banana in my soup and gobbling up chicken.

04:38

I liked this one. I can relate.

04:42

The two click right away.

04:48

At first glance, the beard makes you look
like an athlete and a bit intimidating.

04:54

- But then your smile lights it up.
- I get it from my mom.

05:00

- You have your mom's smile?
- I do.

05:05

Hideki came to Japan from Peru three years ago and currently attends a part-time high school.

05:14

He also studies at this Japanese language school once a week.

05:23

Rene hopes to make a manga with Hideki to cheer him on.

05:31

Let's hang out and put our ideas together.
We'll make a manga.

05:35

Something that will encourage others.

05:40

To learn more about Hideki, Rene visits his home.

05:45

- I'm home!
- Hello. Come in.

05:50

Hello.

05:52

I'm Hideki's dad. And that's his mom.

05:57

I'm manga creator Hoshino Rene. I was
born in Cameroon but grew up in Japan.

06:04

Thank you for having me.

06:06

His mother, Carla, is Peruvian.

06:09

His father, Augusto, is a Peruvian of Japanese descent.

06:14

With his younger brother Yoshio, they're a family of four.

06:19

Your mother has a very nice smile.

06:25

Thank you.

06:27

You're right. It's the same smile.

06:29

And mine?

06:31

The same.
You all have such great smiles.

06:36

The family welcomes Rene with a Peruvian dish.

06:40

It's pollo al horno, roast chicken seasoned with spices.

06:45

We do this in Peru.

06:55

The meal is a lively one.

07:02

Wow! That's good!

07:09

The family makes a point of eating together and sharing the day's events.

07:16

- You have a great family.
- Yes. I like to see my dad and mom smiling.

07:22

I mentioned your smile earlier,
but your whole family smiles a lot.

07:26

We do. Yes.

07:28

The family moved to Japan for his father's work at an automotive factory when Hideki was ten months old.

07:36

But at age seven, he returned to Peru with his mother and younger brother to care for his grandmother.

07:46

They rejoined his father in Japan three years ago when Hideki was fifteen.

07:54

Here are my grandparents.

07:59

In Peru, they lived with his grandparents.

08:06

And it was this experience that made Hideki want to become a nursing care worker.

08:13

Hideki was close to his grandmother.

08:19

He also bore a close resemblance to her.

08:24

A strong and kind woman, his grandmother had kept the family together through thick and thin, always with a smile on her face.

08:36

But she became disabled in her seventies, and the lack of quality nursing care in Peru took its toll.

08:48

Despite the family's best efforts, she passed away five years ago.

08:58

While caring for my grandma in Peru,
I kept thinking that if only I'd studied more

09:04

and gotten certified, I could have
done more to help her.

09:15

Hideki became determined to study nursing care.

09:18

But he also has concerns.

09:24

My Japanese isn't that good, so I'm worried
about how older people will see me.

09:37

That's what I'm most scared of.
What I worry about most.

09:44

The language barrier is the first challenge that most foreigners face when working in Japan.

09:54

Would you like a receipt?

09:57

No thanks.

09:57

Thank you.

09:59

During the day, Hideki works a part-time job.

10:03

He tries to absorb as much of the language and work culture as he can.

10:12

Rene also has a story about working in Japan.

10:20

While in high school, he applied for a part-time job.

10:26

I'm Hoshino. I'm here for the interview.

10:29

You're Mr. Hoshino?

10:32

While the interview went well, Rene didn't get the job.

10:37

Seeing you at the counter might startle our customers.

10:41

We haven't hired a foreigner before.

10:51

Twenty years have passed since then, and Rene now sees foreigners working in various stores.

10:57

He's happy to know that society is changing.

11:06

Rene returns to Tokyo.

11:08

He has a ritual that he performs before starting a new piece.

11:15

Before I start on a manga, I like to go
for a walk to collect my thoughts.

11:22

That's how I get started.

11:28

How could he best communicate Hideki's thoughts?

11:31

Rene finds it infinitely more challenging than working on his own stories.

11:42

I need to identify what they want society
and others to know the most.

11:49

I need to be attuned to their feelings.

11:56

And that stimulates my mind.
It gives me fresh ideas.

12:10

The two meet up online to discuss the manga's theme.

12:20

Since you'll be presenting it, I want to focus
on what is most important to you right now.

12:29

Probably family.
They mean the most to me.

12:36

My family helped me get from zero
to where I am now.

12:45

Little by little, Rene gains insight into Hideki's mind.

12:50

And he decides to dig deeper.

12:57

A week later, he revisits Hideki and invites him out to a certain place.

13:06

It's been too long!

13:09

They visit a gym.

13:14

Hideki is on the basketball team of his part-time high school.

13:22

Rene also used to play.

13:24

He hopes to bond with Hideki over their shared hobby.

13:31

And he discovers a hard worker who hates to lose.

13:41

Hideki returned to Japan while in junior-high third grade.

13:46

As the only foreigner in his school, he struggled with the language and cultural differences.

13:53

The loneliness caused him to lose his trademark smile for a time.

14:01

It was really tough at first.

14:06

It was hard to make friends,
and I was on my own.

14:15

What pulled him through was his parents' warm encouragement.

14:22

They told me, "Don't give up."

14:28

"You can do this, Hideki!"

14:33

You can! You can!

14:38

Giving up doesn't get you anywhere.
I decided to keep giving it my best shot.

14:49

Slowly but surely, he moved forward and began to smile again.

14:58

I'm home.
I'm home too.

15:01

His family has been his source of support and courage.

15:06

Rene decides to try his hand at Peruvian cooking.

15:10

He hopes to learn about the family's values and traditions.

15:16

- She's mothering you.
- Oh, thank you.

15:19

You got it!

15:21

The family cheers him on together.

15:28

You're all good at praising people.

15:34

They treat everyone they meet as family.

15:37

It's a trait passed down from their grandmother's generation.

15:43

And their smiles reflect their family values.

15:52

I tell my sons to always smile.

15:56

To not be discouraged.
To be thankful for everything.

16:05

And to keep going no matter
how difficult it is.

16:14

Spending time with Hideki's family brings Rene to a certain realization.

16:21

Your mom reminds me of my own.

16:24

When eating and even when leaving,
she makes you feel secure and loved.

16:38

Rene's mother, Dalina, has constantly supported him with her strength, warmth, and endless positivity.

16:48

At Rene's entrance ceremony, she showed up in a traditional garment.

16:55

Her actions taught him to be proud of his roots, and her teachings are embedded in his heart.

17:05

Stay positive!

17:07

Follow your heart and have courage!

17:13

I'm always praying for you, my children.

17:25

With just over half a year of high school left, Hideki goes to meet a friend.

17:31

Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.

17:35

Hideki's friend Eloa is from Brazil.

17:38

She's worked as a care worker in Japan for the past four years.

17:44

Hideki wants to hear about the job and get her advice.

17:49

First, what would an uncertified person do?

17:55

Make tea, dry their hair, and help them
get changed-things like that.

18:01

Once I start this job, what should I do
if I want to level up?

18:07

Get certified. Take the training courses.
Become a care manager or something.

18:15

As a foreigner, what is the hardest part
of working in Japan?

18:20

Probably the language barrier.

18:25

It's this language barrier that Hideki worries about.

18:31

Eloa has some advice for him.

18:34

It's all about human relations.

18:37

So be cheerful and communicate
in a kind and gentle way.

18:43

- I'll do my best.
- Good luck!

18:48

Hideki is cheered by Eloa's advice and shows up to an appointment in a suit.

18:54

I'm here for a site visit,
so I have to look sharp.

19:00

Today, he's visiting a nursing home to observe its daily operations and learn about what the job entails.

19:09

This is his first time inside a nursing home in Japan.

19:14

Good morning.

19:16

- My name is Kimura. Welcome.
- Thank you.

19:25

This is...Excuse me!
Excuse me.

19:30

Everything is new to Hideki.

19:32

He reconfirms what sort of nursing care worker he wants to be.

19:40

To be supportive and compassionate.
I think that's the most important thing.

19:48

I'll do my best.

19:52

Rene begins turning Hideki's story into manga.

19:58

This is the final stretch.

20:00

He makes numerous changes to get it right.

20:06

What to do here...

20:11

The manga will be presented at an event hosted by the Japanese language school that Hideki attends.

20:19

A Peruvian father of Japanese descent...

20:24

Hideki will make the presentation in Japanese.

20:30

I'll put my heart into it.

20:34

If I can do this without giving up,
I'll be able to tackle other things.

20:43

Finally, the day of the event arrives.

20:50

Good morning.

20:52

Excuse me.

20:56

Hi! Let's do this!

20:58

I'll do my best.

21:02

The event is a meetup for foreigners living in Japan to discuss jobs and career paths.

21:09

A time slot has been allotted for the manga presentation.

21:16

Hideki's family is here to support him.

21:22

Twenty-five people from eight countries and regions are here.

21:31

It's time for Hideki to present the manga.

21:34

Will he be able to communicate his thoughts?

21:43

So this is it. The story starts with
"My smile is inherited."

21:54

The manga covers how Hideki's family is connected by smiles.

22:01

Have you lived in Japan long?

22:04

You have a very nice smile.

22:08

My smile is inherited.

22:14

Hello, I'm Heshike Hideki.

22:18

My mom is Peruvian. And my dad is
a Peruvian of Japanese descent.

22:27

I also have a younger brother Yoshio,
and we live in Aichi Prefecture.

22:38

Hideki grew up in Lima, the capital of Peru.

22:43

He has fond memories of his family gathering around the table and sharing stories of their day.

22:53

But when I was in junior high school, my grandma came to need care.

23:02

My mom took care of her while also holding a job.

23:06

My brother and I did our best to help out.

23:08

Thank you, Hideki.

23:14

We used a nursing care service, but it felt unprofessional and impersonal.

23:22

If only Grandma could receive better care.

23:29

The story then transitioned to his early days in Japan.

23:35

Interacting with older people at his part-time job reinforced his dream of becoming a care worker in Japan.

23:44

But at school, he struggled with loneliness.

23:50

I didn't understand Japanese, and I couldn't talk to anyone.

23:59

Will I always be on my own?

24:03

Unable to fit into my new environment,
there were days when I felt anxious.

24:12

But what helped me not give up was
the smiles that filled my home.

24:25

His family's presence reassured him and gave him the courage to move forward.

24:34

I kept attending school.

24:36

Since I didn't have any friends to chat with, I studied during breaks.

24:44

My teacher saw my efforts and supported me.

24:47

And I slowly began making friends.

24:53

He comes to the final page.

24:56

This is the last one.

25:02

I'm now studying to become a nursing care worker.

25:04

Although I'll probably run into difficulties down the road, I hope to keep trying.

25:14

Someday, I'll become a nursing care worker that people can rely on.

25:22

I want people to feel like they're being cared for by family.

25:32

I'll wear the smile I inherited
from my grandmother.

25:40

Thank you.

25:45

Hideki has made it through.

25:51

Thank you. I was so nervous.

25:54

I was very touched by it.

25:57

It was very meaningful.

26:01

It's a great manga! Thank you.

26:05

We're glad to hear it.

26:07

What I learned from this story is that you should never give up on your dreams no matter how harsh the path is.

26:15

Your experiences give me more inspiration because I came here only a month ago that's why.

26:21

I appreciate your work, brother.

26:26

Many new connections are made.

26:32

I really liked your manga.

26:36

Really? Thanks.

26:37

Thank you.

26:40

Good luck, everyone.
We can, we can. We can do anything.

26:44

It was very emotional for me.

26:48

I appreciate everyone's support. And I'm
touched by the response Hideki received.

27:01

The only way now is forward.

27:06

The manga helped me understand
Hideki better. Thank you.

27:27

- Te quiero!
- OK, thank you!

27:30

- That was great.
- Thank you, everyone.

27:34

Keep going, keep studying,
and I'll see you at work someday.

27:41

For sure!

27:43

The smile Hideki inherited from his family will continue to light the way.

27:48

Thank you so much.
I'll do my best.
