Is there a meal you'll never forget?

00:09

We asked people with international roots living in Japan to tell us of a dish

00:14

that seemed to come at just the right moment in their lives - a flavor that brought timely emotional support.

00:23

Let's delve into the stories of those for whom a certain taste will forever remain in their memories.

00:38

"CAIPIRINHA."

00:41

Thank you!

00:44

This small cafe on a shopping street in Nagoya City is a neighborhood gathering spot for customers young and old.

00:57

The manager is Vinicius Oda.

01:03

Cheerful and friendly, he's the life and soul of the local community.

01:08

But this wasn't always the case.

01:11

There was a time when he had difficulty accepting his origins.

01:18

Vinicius's father is a Brazilian of Japanese descent, and his mother is Brazilian.

01:27

He was born in Toyota in Aichi Prefecture, a town with a large Brazilian population,

01:33

and spent his childhood in a housing complex where many Brazilians lived.

01:40

However, as he grew older, his Brazilian roots became a cause of self-doubt.

01:50

Part of me wanted to affirm
my Brazilian identity.

01:54

But there was something inside me
that felt it was impossible.

02:00

Saying that I couldn't fit in with
people my age in the community...

02:05

might be an exaggeration.

02:10

But I often felt like that.

02:17

But a certain flavor brought a timely change to Vinicius's life in 2019,

02:22

when he enjoyed a Brazilian cocktail called Caipirinha with his relatives.

02:31

It was during his second ever visit to Brazil.

02:34

Back then, he worried over how he'd be received.

02:42

However, his relatives welcomed him with open arms and threw him a surprise party.

02:52

His grandparents shed tears of joy at the sight of their grandson.

02:57

I remember they had me dance a lot
at the party.

03:02

My uncle said, "Let's dance!"
They spun me round like a mannequin.

03:10

A glass of Caipirinha in hand, Vinicius chatted using what little Portuguese he knew,

03:16

and found he could connect with people, regardless of language or roots.

03:24

Because they so kindly welcomed me,
it made me more positive about myself.

03:33

It made me want to value
my own unique individuality.

03:42

Caipirinha helped me embrace my roots.

03:52

"MENEMEN."

03:57

Hard at work on a demolition site in Nagoya is Serkan Pak, from southeast Turkey.

04:04

In this trade where he started as a part-timer, he's now the owner of a business that employs twenty workers.

04:15

This plot will be vacant in about a week.

04:20

We work hard, and we enjoy it.

04:25

In 2016, Serkan and his Japanese wife Mayu got married.

04:30

They're the proud parents of three children.

04:33

The dish Serkan will always remember fondly is usually served at breakfast in Turkey

04:39

- menemen - vegetables sauteed with tomatoes and eggs.

04:47

As a kid, I'd wake up, my dad and I would
go grocery shopping, and we made this.

04:56

Serkan moved to Japan in 2013, at the age of seventeen.

05:01

A compatriot found him a part-time job in demolition.

05:04

At the time, as his budget was limited and Halal ingredients were difficult to procure in Japan

05:10

he often prepared menemen - a low-cost yet nutritious option.

05:17

Eating it reminds me of those days.

05:21

When I didn't have much money,
it was a cheap solution.

05:27

Breakfast is ready!

05:30

Menemen was a source of encouragement through hard times.

05:34

He still cooks it on occasion when he has a bit of time in the morning.

05:39

We often ate this on Sunday mornings.

05:43

We slept in, then he prepared it.

05:47

Now that his business is on track, Serkan wants to help fellow foreigners in Japan who struggle to get by like he once did years ago.

06:00

For lunch today...

06:04

...some of his homemade menemen.

06:08

He prepared a little extra for this new member to his crew who's also from Turkey.

06:19

Language barriers
can make it hard to find work.

06:24

I want to do what I can
to help those looking for a job.

06:32

My sidekick: menemen!

06:43

"EOMUKTANG."

06:49

Our third and final story takes us near an airport, to this Korean restaurant.

06:59

Welcome!

07:02

It's run by Kim Hyun Jin from Busan in Korea.

07:06

She opens the shop at 6:50 a.m.

07:09

She's memorized all her regular customers' favorites.

07:13

- The usual? Rice porridge?
- Yes, please.

07:18

I'll give you half...

07:21

so you don't leave any.

07:25

Each and every customer is very important to Hyun Jin.

07:29

Thanks to her warmhearted character, the restaurant is always lively with hungry patrons.

07:35

I'd be lonely without this place.

07:37

It powers me for the day.

07:42

A chef back in her homeland as well, Hyun Jin came to Japan in 2008.

07:50

Betting it all on her cooking skills, she opened a Korean restaurant in Nagoya.

07:56

However, she had to close up shop just a year-and-a-half later, and was left with debt.

08:07

She was considering going back to Korea, when, on a cold winter night, she and a friend had some eomuktang.

08:19

Eomuktang is a hot pot of fish cakes and vegetables.

08:22

It's a dish often shared with friends or family in winter.

08:27

Just as Hyun Jin was ready to give up her dream, her friend knew just the right words.

08:37

"If you run away, it'll be the same
wherever you go."

08:42

"You should think this over," she said.

08:47

So, I decided to give it another try.

08:52

That night, the eomuktang
was flavored with tears.

08:58

A seasoning of tears
that turned to hope.

09:05

Then, in 2014, Hyun Jin made a comeback and opened her current eatery, where she's built invaluable ties with her customers.

09:20

This is a farm owned by one of Hyun Jin's regulars, who offers some of his vegetables for her restaurant.

09:30

She's giving it her all here in Japan.
So, I want to help her somehow.

09:39

Thank you!

09:43

Everyone has a dish that holds a special place in their heart.

09:47

A recipe that's worth much more than the sum of its ingredients.

09:52

What's yours?
