00:01

Yeah!

00:04

Winter rafting has been making a splash in Hokkaido,

00:08

providing plenty of thrills while racing down rapids in sub-zero temperatures!

00:14

That was really wild!

00:17

Along with being surrounded by huge, towering cliffs!

00:22

Join us as we explore hidden icy landscapes that can only be accessed in the depths of winter.

00:28

This is incredible!

00:30

We're off on a wondrously thrilling adventure!

00:36

Wild Hokkaido!

00:41

The Taisetsu Mountain Range stretches across central Hokkaido.

00:45

Today, we've come to the Sounkyo Gorge, in the northern part of the range.

00:50

Temperatures here can drop 20 degrees Celsius below zero, which is extreme even for Hokkaido.

00:58

Hokkaido's largest river, the Ishikari River, flows through the gorge, which is full of towering cliffs.

01:05

There's a variety of icy worlds to enjoy here.

01:11

First, we'll strap on our snow shoes and trek through the gorge, which can only be accessed in winter.

01:18

Then it's on to winter rafting, a rare activity even in Hokkaido.

01:24

Isis Berns is from Canada.

01:28

She usually enjoys winter activities like snowboarding. But this time she'll be trying something different.

01:35

I'm very nervous because it's my first time to do winter rafting!

01:40

But I'm also excited to see winter sights like snow and the icicles and

01:45

these things that I haven't seen before frozen on the river. I'm looking forward to that.

01:52

She'll go trekking at Obako, an area upstream of the Ishikari River.

01:56

It's said to be the most beautiful area in the Sounkyo Gorge.

02:03

Hello.

02:05

Hello, good morning.

02:07

Are you my guide for today?

02:08

Yes, I'm Toby. Today, I'm gonna bring you to visit the gorge, which is Sounkyo!

02:13

Sounkyo!

02:16

Isis's guide is Toby from Taiwan.

02:20

He moved to Hokkaido two years ago, and takes tourists on trekking courses

02:25

as he shows them the beauty of nature in the Sounkyo Gorge.

02:31

Today, they'll begin at the Obako parking area

02:34

and trek an approximately one kilometer trail that will take them to three scenic spots.

02:43

It's late December, and minus 8 degrees!

02:49

Wow, this is pretty cool.

02:51

The river is deep here in spring, summer, and autumn,

02:56

but in winter the water stops flowing, so we can go down the gorge.

03:01

So, we can't come here in any other season?

03:03

Yeah, just winter! Just now!

03:05

Okay, well lucky us!

03:09

Because the river runs through here during summer, it's impossible to go any further into the gorge.

03:16

But in winter the river freezes over,

03:19

and with the help of a qualified guide you can venture further into the gorge.

03:24

OK, not bad, not bad.

03:27

It's time to head off to search for some unique winter scenery!

03:35

So, we're in the river now?

03:37

So, under the snow.

03:39

Under the snow here is a river?

03:41

So, we have to walk very carefully, otherwise we could fall in the water.

03:46

Isis has already noticed something.

03:48

It's amazing! Like both sides how the grooves go in and out like this.

03:53

It's massive!

03:56

Wow, but this is beautiful. It looks almost manmade how the grooves are so straight like this, but it's all natural.

04:03

A unique geological feature found in Sounkyo is its columnar joints.

04:08

This is where the rock face appears to be columns stacked neatly beside one another,

04:13

and is the result of volcanic activity.

04:17

30 thousand years ago, lava from a volcano flowed down in this area,

04:22

and cooled, then melted, and cooled again,

04:27

so it became this stick-like shape.

04:31

This is an incredible shape.

04:35

The columns can range in height from 20 to 50 meters

04:39

and the rushing river water has cut away at the cliff face for over 10 thousand years.

04:46

These columnar-jointed cliffs stretch an incredible 24 kilometers,

04:50

making them a rare sight.

04:55

Because it's only late December, the river hasn't completely frozen over yet.

05:02

As Isis walks with the assistance of her guide...

05:07

That is so cool!

05:10

They encounter a Brown Dipper.

05:15

It's not cold?

05:17

Did it just go in the water?

05:19

Yes, it dives in the water to eat small insects.

05:24

It's a really cute bird.

05:25

Oh wow!

05:29

The surrounding pure white snow makes it much easier to spot smaller wildlife.

05:37

As they continue, they come across much larger things, too.

05:43

- Now you can look on your left side.
- Woah!

05:47

- Woah! That's huge!!
- It's a big frozen waterfall.

05:51

Woah, look at those icicles on there! What!?

05:56

The frozen waterfall is 20 meters tall, the height of a 7-story building.

06:03

Water flowing through the gaps in the joints froze slowly over time.

06:10

This is incredible, I've never been so close to a frozen waterfall.

06:16

It's a really special view in this area.

06:19

So cool!

06:22

There are more than 20 frozen waterfalls like this of varying sizes here in Sounkyo,

06:27

making it one of the largest collections of frozen falls in Japan.

06:36

They return to the starting point and head upstream to enter a different world of snow and ice.

06:45

That's a lot! This is incredible, look at this! It's like the whole rockface!

06:50

Welcome to Icicle Land!

06:52

Wow!

06:55

These icicles are known as ice pillars.

07:00

The water seeps through the rocks and forms a curtain of icicles that stretches 200 meters.

07:07

Some ice pillars are over 10 meters tall.

07:10

Toby checks that it's safe before walking through.

07:15

So many different layers of ice.

07:18

It's so interesting with all the shapes and the lines in here. Look at that!

07:23

And every year you can see different shaped icicles.

07:28

Very cool!

07:32

Look at that it's even bending!

07:34

Sometimes the wind is blowing while the ice is freezing so it bends.

07:41

Strange! It's organic!

07:44

This is so interesting!

07:48

Isis is blown away by the incredible variety of scenery to be found in these extreme winter conditions.

07:57

Now for the "SENSEI's Tip!"

07:59

Here's how you search for natural frozen formations.

08:05

These are called frost flowers. When the water in a river or lake is frozen at minus 15 degrees or below,

08:11

large ice crystals form on the surface.

08:13

The best time to find them is in the morning, before temperatures rise and they melt.

08:20

Splash icicles form when water splashes continuously and freezes on things like trees or rocks.

08:27

Wind can create snow rollers, round snow creations that look like rolled cakes.

08:34

These frozen creations tend to be made by strong winds.

08:40

Try braving the cold and looking for these naturally-occurring winter formations around a river near you!

08:49

It's the next day.

08:51

Today's the day to tackle winter rafting!

08:55

What kind of wintry world awaits?

09:01

Hello, nice to meet you!

09:02

I'm Toshi. Toshinari Ota.

09:04

Okay, I'm Isis.

09:05

Isis-san, nice to meet you!

09:08

Toshinari is a rafting veteran, having been a rafting guide in adventure capitals like New Zealand and Canada.

09:17

Is winter rafting normal, like do people often do it? Or is it rare?

09:21

Winter has really special, really beautiful sights on the river.

09:27

Okay.

09:29

In winter, the river flows gently, and you can take in the peaceful scenery,

09:33

but bouts of rapids add an extra thrill!

09:38

They'll travel 5 kilometers down the Ishikari River for about an hour.

09:45

A dry suit is essential for winter rafting.

09:48

It keeps you warm and, if you happen to fall into the water, it will also help keep you afloat.

09:55

A life jacket is also put on over the top.

10:00

- So, yeah, let's go, right?! Yeah!
- Let's go!

10:05

Here we go down the Ishikari River! Woo!

10:10

The temperature is minus 6 degrees. Their river rafting adventure begins as the snow falls.

10:20

It's really cool!

10:24

It's beautiful here quiet like this.

10:27

You can see deep into the forest.

10:31

Wow, this is amazing!

10:34

Look at all the snow!

10:36

Every tree branch covered.

10:40

The trees are stripped bare of leaves in winter, leaving an unobstructed view of the surrounding scenery from the boat.

10:49

As they approach the halfway point, they enter the rapids zone.

10:56

Woohoo!

10:59

Woah, woah, woah!

11:03

Are you okay?

11:04

Yeah, this is awesome!

11:06

- Grab the rope, hold onto the rope, we're going to hit the rocks a little bit.
- Okay, alright!

11:12

- You okay?
- Yep! Good!

11:16

The spray of freezing water on the skin only adds to the thrill!

11:21

Senses are sharpened, and the ride is exhilarating.

11:26

Wow. Wow, wow!

11:30

C'mon Ishikari River! Woo!

11:34

Winter rafting! Yeehaw!

11:37

Hold on tight!

11:38

Alright!

11:43

Beautiful! Oh my goodness!

11:52

Here we go!

11:54

A real winter wonderland!

11:58

Isis is having the time of her life!

12:06

That was really wild! I love it!

12:10

Hokkaido Wild!

12:12

- Wild Hokkaido? What's the name of the program?
- Wild Hokkaido!

12:13

Wild Hokkaido!

12:16

So good!

12:18

Look how fluffy those are! It looks like marshmallows!

12:22

That's cool, it's like they're wearing hats!

12:27

They've spotted some snowy mounds sitting on the surface of the river.

12:33

They're known as snow caps.

12:37

It appears as if the rocks are wearing little caps made of snow.

12:42

The unique shapes are actually quite cute.

12:46

- It just looks like art. Wherever you look!
- Yeah, it is!

12:48

Every direction I look is a piece of art.

12:52

I don't want to forget it.

12:55

Time to have some fun!

12:57

Just like that right, just punching it?

12:59

It's super soft!

13:00

Wow! It's so powdery!

13:06

Fresh snow! The eyes!

13:12

Ah, it's so cute!

13:14

Yay! Very happy! I'll call it Bob!

13:18

Bob?

13:19

- Hi Bob!
- Hi Bob!

13:24

Yeah, in winter it's a very mysterious, picturesque area.

13:30

Now we can see the wall over there more clearly.

13:35

Not far from their goal, the snow stops falling to reveal the impressive landscape surrounding them.

13:45

Columnar-jointed cliffs tower 100 meters high.

13:49

Nature's majesty is truly sublime.

13:55

That really stands out against the white snow!

13:58

Wow, the cuts in the rock are so cool!

14:02

You can only see this view in the winter.

14:06

An hour has passed in a flash, signaling the end of Isis' first winter rafting experience.

14:13

I have to say, that was the wildest ride I've ever been on!

14:20

I was expecting a bit of a calmer river to be honest,

14:23

but because it was really adventurous, I had a lot of fun!

14:27

There's never a dull moment.

14:30

So I think Sounkyo is a secret special place.

14:34

Seeing the ice and the snow

14:36

frozen by the rivers and on the walls with the icicles. It was incredible.

14:42

I was very moved and surprised.

14:46

Wild Hokkaido! takes you on great activities in the great outdoors of northern Japan.
