00:12

Mt. Everest,
the highest peak in the Himalayas,

00:15

lies at an elevation of 8,848 meters.

00:23

Here, in 2018, one man
achieved an incredible feat.

00:29

A figure forges ahead in the snow.

00:32

Mountain climber Xia Boyu, then aged 69.

00:37

The legs that move him forward
are prosthetics

00:40

that have been specially modified
for mountain climbing.

00:49

I climbed Mount Everest
for the first time in 1975,

00:52

losing both feet.

00:55

In the last 43 years,
I've been working hard toward my goal,

00:58

I never gave up.

01:00

Finally on May 14, 2018,

01:02

I reached the summit of Mount Everest.

01:06

Xia spent half a century
in dedication to a singular goal:

01:10

conquering Everest.

01:13

Look at that.

01:17

That is Everest.

01:20

He shares the incredible story of his life,

01:22

and his relentless passion
for chasing his dreams.

01:26

Bravely Climb to New Heights

01:35

8 AM. Xiangshan, on the outskirts of Beijing.

01:39

Xiangshan, Beijing

01:44

You are early today.

01:46

Just a bit earlier than usual.

01:50

It's a popular climbing spot.

01:52

This is where Xia trains.

01:56

He's the second-ever double amputee
to have reached the peak of Everest.

02:01

In recognition of this feat,

02:03

in 2019 he received a
Laureus World Sports Award.

02:08

In March 2022,

02:10

he served as a torchbearer
at the Beijing Paralympics,

02:14

inspiring people with
disabilities everywhere.

02:19

Disability is not to be feared.

02:22

I hope people with disabilities
can be confident and strong,

02:25

willing to challenge themselves,

02:27

to fight for their own destiny,

02:29

to go out into the world and exercise,

02:31

alleviating the effects
of their disabilities.

02:36

Xia has become well-known
as a Chinese mountain climber.

02:40

But his path to achieving this dream was

02:42

filled with countless
challenges and setbacks.

02:48

Xia was born in 1949 in Chongqing.

02:53

At age 7, his family moved to Qinghai.

02:56

He took up soccer,
and practiced hard each day

02:59

with high hopes for the future.

03:01

Then, in 1975,

03:03

a unique opportunity presented itself.

03:06

A government-led mountain climbing team
was recruiting members

03:10

and organized a medical check-up.

03:12

Xia was interested,

03:13

and after receiving the check-up
he was selected to join the team.

03:19

Since I got this opportunity
to join the team in 1975,

03:23

I thought to myself,

03:24

I will do the climbing first
and then come back and play soccer.

03:29

I did not anticipate
that I would lose both feet.

03:34

For the honor of the country,
the team challenged Everest.

03:39

However, just before reaching the peak,

03:42

sudden strong winds
threatened the team's efforts.

03:48

The high-altitude wind
that day was so strong,

03:51

suddenly we were trapped there
for 2 days and 3 nights,

03:54

using up all our food, fuel,
oxygen, and everything else.

03:59

We were forced to retreat.

04:01

When we descended to about 7,600m,

04:03

one of my exhausted teammates
lost his sleeping bag.

04:07

Back then, my nickname was "The Fire Master,"
for my excellent cold endurance.

04:12

So I gave him mine without hesitation,

04:15

but then I lost my feet due to frostbite.

04:19

With the extensive damage to his feet,

04:21

the only option was amputation.

04:24

The effort to reach the peak of Everest
had ended in failure.

04:28

Xia made the decision to return to Beijing.

04:33

After losing my feet, I was very devastated.

04:36

I was only in my 20s

04:38

and I did not know how I should
get on with my life from there.

04:42

I lost all my faith in life.

04:47

But Xia gained renewed hope
after receiving prosthetic legs,

04:52

which were still rare at the time.

04:59

I fell in love with mountain-climbing
after that time.

05:03

I found that my cold endurance,
stamina, and adaptability

05:06

were assets to mountain-climbing.

05:08

The thrill, adventure, and challenge
that come with mountain-climbing were

05:12

perfect for my youth-like mentality.

05:15

I had the thought of
doing mountain climbing again,

05:18

and climbing Mount Everest
became my dream and goal.

05:25

6 AM.

05:27

Xia begins each day by training.

05:33

He's followed this routine
for more than 40 years.

05:38

But this rigorous daily training

05:39

brought about yet
another devastating setback.

05:48

The doctor said,

05:49

if you want your wounds to heal,
you can't wear the prostheses,

05:53

you must rest in bed.

05:55

But I couldn't go a single day
without exercising,

05:59

so the wounds wouldn't heal,

06:00

and they turned into cancer,

06:02

then metastasized to my lymphatic system,

06:05

it seemed that I didn't have much time left.

06:08

I did not even know
if I could wake up the next morning.

06:12

But I thought,
I'll strive to fulfill my dream

06:14

as long as I'm still alive.

06:19

After several years spent battling cancer,

06:21

Xia had a miraculous full recovery.

06:25

He began building up his strength
by participating in parasports events.

06:31

He once again set his sights
on climbing Everest.

06:40

In 2008,

06:42

I felt that my prostheses
were working well enough

06:44

to the point to try climbing again.

06:47

At that time, I hadn't climbed
any mountains in a few decades,

06:52

so I wasn't sure if my stamina
and my cold endurance

06:55

were still suitable for mountain climbing.

07:01

2014.

07:05

39 years after his first attempt,

07:07

Xia once again attempted to scale Everest.

07:13

But the climb had to be abandoned
after a deadly avalanche struck,

07:17

killing 16 people.

07:20

2015.

07:22

His third attempt was also thwarted,

07:24

this time by an earthquake in Nepal.

07:29

In 2016, it was my fourth time
climbing Mount Everest.

07:33

I got to 8,750m,

07:36

only 94m away from the summit.

07:39

If only I had one more hour,
I could reach the summit.

07:43

But suddenly the strong
high-altitude wind came,

07:46

the visibility was less than 1 meter.

07:50

The ridge we were standing on
was only 20 cm wide,

07:53

and there was only deep cliff on both sides.

07:59

I was so heavily beaten up by the situation,

08:02

I was already 67, with no legs,

08:05

this might be my last time
climbing Mount Everest,

08:10

I must get up there no matter what,

08:12

even if it means I can't get down,

08:16

getting up there was my priority.

08:23

At that moment, Xia had a
vision of himself as a young man.

08:32

Then I looked at my mountain guides,

08:34

who were there to help me
to fulfill my dream,

08:37

They were only in their 20s,

08:40

I was clear that the
strong wind at this high-altitude

08:44

would exponentially increase the time
it takes to reach the top

08:48

and the risk for frostbite injuries.

08:52

In 1975, we encountered
extremely strong high-altitude wind,

08:57

we didn't get to the top,

08:59

and I lost both feet.

09:02

Suddenly I realized that

09:04

I can't just neglect other people's lives
for the sake of fulfilling my own dream.

09:10

For the first time since his amputation,

09:13

Xia felt his commitment to his dream waver.

09:19

Yet in 2017,

09:21

Xia was inspired to
attempt Everest for a fifth time.

09:27

This is his friend Ke Qingfeng,

09:29

who publishes a magazine about the outdoors.

09:32

Ke had gone with Xia
on his attempts to climb Everest

09:35

to document the journey.

09:39

When I found out that he wanted to climb
Mount Everest for the fifth time,

09:42

I asked him,
what is your concern and difficulty.

09:47

He said it was all about the lack of funds.

09:50

So, I decided to support him.

09:56

I made the hardest decision in my life,

09:59

which was to retreat.

10:01

Yet again.

10:03

Even though it may leave me
with lifelong regrets,

10:07

being alive is the most important thing.

10:11

As long as I stay alive,

10:13

the mountain is there always,

10:15

I could always come again.

10:18

I couldn't have fulfilled my dream
without my family and friends.

10:24

Everybody works hard together.

10:26

I took care of the logistics
of the climbing and video documentary.

10:31

Mr. Xia's feat is one of a kind
and unachievable by us,

10:35

the exploratory and
adventurous spirit he embodies

10:38

really brings positive influence
to the general public.

10:44

This is Xia Boyu. Over.

10:48

Hello, Mr. Xia.

10:55

May 2018.

10:58

Xia is 69 years old.

11:04

He begins his fifth attempt to climb Everest.

11:15

Ever since having the idea and
dream of climbing Mount Everest again,

11:20

I have persevered,

11:21

no matter what difficulties arose in my life.

11:27

Climbing with prostheses
was inherently difficult.

11:31

I was not able to feel the ground
that I was standing on,

11:34

whether the ground was flat,
or if the rocks were solid.

11:38

It was only when the sensation came up
my lower back that I could feel them.

11:42

But by then my body
might be shaking excessively,

11:45

so I must hold on to my safety poles tightly,

11:48

to help me with my balance.

11:52

Eventually, on May 14,

11:54

at 8:31 Nepal time,

11:56

I reached the summit of Mount Everest,

11:58

fulfilling my dream
at the last 40 some years.

12:20

Mr. Ke!

12:23

Mark this moment.

12:27

Let my family know.

12:32

More than 40 years.
It has been hard.

12:35

Here I am finally.

12:45

I was overjoyed.

12:47

The happiness from
the successful climb was there.

12:52

Then I thought of my family and friends,

12:55

the people who have supported me.

12:59

I was crying like a baby,

13:02

I couldn't stop it.

13:04

It was so emotional.

13:10

It has been four years since
Xia reached the peak of Everest.

13:15

He's now 73 years old.

13:18

He is a great man!

13:22

And he's already making plans
for his next climbing goal.

13:31

I hope that people can use this period
to participate in physical activities,

13:35

which help us better protect ourselves
from the pandemic,

13:39

and it also helps to build a foundation for
participating in any future outdoor events.

13:45

I am also preparing myself for
the 7 continents and 2 polar regions,

13:49

and the "Hundred City,
Thousand Mountain" project.

13:53

Let's all work hard and cheer together!

14:01

Even at 73,

14:03

he still holds the same
strong belief in perseverance.

14:10

Bravely climb to new heights.

14:14

No matter what challenge you face in life,

14:18

you can go for it

14:20

and climb to new heights.

14:24

My life is a like a climbing process.

14:28

In this year's Winter Paralympics,

14:30

I stepped up to my "peak"
in performance arts.

14:38

In the future,

14:39

I want to try more thrilling things

14:41

like rowing,

14:43

deep diving,

14:44

hang gliding,

14:47

these are my new "mountains" to climb.
