The long war in Syria continues to rage on.

00:25

In neighboring Turkey, an estimated 3.3 million people are under temporary protection.

00:35

"Syria is torn apart."

00:38

"It's lost everything."

00:46

But through circus performing, the hearts of these young Syrians, once crushed by the devastation of war,

00:53

are beginning to heal under one Turkish women's initiative.

01:00

"To feel loved and accepted and making
friends is what matters most."

01:14

But in February 2023, the area they live in is struck by a major earthquake.

01:26

To bring smiles to the children in the affected areas, the young Syrian performers are heading out to take the stage.

01:36

"The kids remind me of my childhood."

01:42

"I only wish for their happiness."

01:51

We follow the lives of the young Syrians living with challenges, yet seeking happiness through circus performing.

02:09

Mardin is located in southeast Turkey, by the border of Syria.

02:25

On weekday afternoons and weekends, there is a place where Syrian refugee children gather.

02:33

Run by a local NGO, this is the Sirkhane Social Circus School.

02:44

About 100 students aged between 5 to 23 are learning circus skills, such as juggling.

03:04

Pınar Demiral is from Turkey.

03:06

She learned social circus pedagogy during her university years, and founded this NGO 12 years ago.

03:20

"This war is terrible."

03:25

"Many lost family, their childhood,
and are living with scars."

03:36

"They need time to heal."

03:45

"The act of working towards a goal together
and helping each other in hand,

03:55

is the best therapy possible."

04:04

The Syrian students in this group are in their teens and twenties, and have been practicing here for years.

04:16

At this school they are praised as the "Circus Heros."

04:20

They perform in events across Turkey.

04:30

They are busy practicing a new piece for a show coming up in two weeks.

04:36

"STOP!"

04:42

It's a 40-minute program combining dialogue and circus performances.

04:52

The main character is a failed magician, who was fired from his circus.

04:57

But he's got a few tricks to try and get his old job back.

05:07

"We've met before?"

05:09

"No, I believe not."

05:12

"A magician from Paris, you are?"

05:15

"Yes indeed."

05:16

"Show me your magic."

05:18

"With pleasure."

05:32

"You're hired!"

05:34

"Yes!"

05:41

They build their confidence under professionals, that have performed as clowns around the world.

05:47

They came from France to support this project.

06:00

The protagonist magician is played by Rafik.

06:05

He has been practicing at this school for eight years.

06:20

Rafik lives on the outskirts of town in a neighborhood with a large refugee population.

06:41

He lives with his parents and sisters.

06:49

The family escaped from Syria ten years ago.

06:58

"Our city was heavily targeted."

07:03

"There was oil?"

07:05

"It's a city with oil pipelines."

07:15

"People were killing each other for food."

07:20

"When my husband was in line for bread,
someone next to him was shot."

07:33

"Syria is torn apart."

07:37

"It's lost everything."

07:45

"No food, no medicine."

07:52

"It's impossible to live there."

08:00

His father, working in a factory, earns about half the average monthly income in Turkey.

08:10

Obtaining a work permit for Syrian refugees is a challenge.

08:14

Most live on low-paid jobs, such as manual labor.

08:29

"We can't afford new stationery
or a bag for the kids."

08:40

"They have to use worn out items."

08:46

"His salary is spent in two weeks and we
can't cover school buses and lunches."

09:02

"I worked in such shops."

09:07

"Carried boxes like these."

09:11

"When did you start?"

09:12

"As a child, right after settling."

09:16

"It was heavy."

09:18

"The owner was surprised,

09:22

to see a kid carry it all."

09:26

"I also worked in a pastry shop."

09:42

Being the eldest son, Rafik worked as a day laborer from the age of 11 in order to support the family.

09:54

"I couldn't rest even when I was sick."

10:05

"It was my job to carry items
no matter how heavy it was."

10:13

"My pay was lower than a new
Turkish staff, too."

10:21

"Did you ever think about quitting?"

10:26

"Never."

10:29

"Father was working there too."

10:35

"I was afraid the owner would
fire him because of me."

10:45

Even now, Rafik's routine is to ask for work on the streets, visiting shops and factories for his daily pay.

10:58

In Turkey, Syrian refugees are allowed to enroll in public schools.

11:05

Rafik graduated from high school in Turkey, and is now also studying tourism at a local university.

11:17

"What's this?"

11:18

"There's no class today."

11:23

"Are they friends?"

11:25

"No."

11:26

"Only you didn't know?"

11:31

"Right."

11:34

"I wasted my time."

11:40

"No messages?"

11:43

"No, because I don't have friends."

11:51

"University is good but sometimes lonely."

11:56

"I don't have close friends."

12:02

"I don't talk with others, I'm usually alone."

12:12

"Sometimes, you want to run from reality."

12:18

"The circus has been my escape."

12:23

"Going there makes me feel better."

12:31

"This place was already poor and people
started pointing fingers at the refugees."

12:40

"Discrimination grew among kids, too."

12:46

"They got bullied at school
and eventually quit going."

13:00

Pınar has been frequently setting up shows and events for local people.

13:06

And such chances to get to know each other is slowly changing people's minds.

13:16

"People now invite the refugees
to local festivals."

13:23

"In the last decade, their image
has changed from negative to cool."

13:39

Four days until the big show, and it's time for a rehearsal.

13:47

"Too late."

13:50

Rafik is having some trouble.

14:01

"You were not ready."

14:04

"I can't find it."

14:08

His performance is stiff, and he is in need of further instruction.

14:35

"Don't just say the line.
Express it with your whole body."

14:42

"Try to do it from your heart."

14:53

"Let me do this scene again."

14:59

After the rehearsal, Rafik asks for help and continues to practice.

15:09

"Thank you."

15:12

"You're welcome."

15:15

"Thank you."

15:16

"You're welcome."

15:18

"You're hired."

15:20

"Yes!"

15:23

"I got the job!"

15:32

They practice till dark.

15:43

Today is the group's day off from practice.

15:46

They are heading to the shops to buy clothes for the performance.

15:51

"Rafik, choose a shirt here."

16:01

"How about this for pajamas?"

16:04

"I like it."

16:06

"Let's try this on."

16:10

"It should be tight."

16:12

"The magician from Paris."

16:16

"It's good."

16:36

Expenses for the show and to manage the school are covered by foreign support and international organizations.

16:50

"If someone asks,
say you're the magician from Paris."

17:10

A warm gathering like this usually leads to one hot topic: their future.

17:20

"The circus just won't cut it.
What's the plan?"

17:25

"Where'll you be in 10 years?"

17:29

"I want to go to university to be an
engineer. But also keep performing."

17:42

"If I can't become an engineer,
I want to work in a circus."

17:56

"What will you wish for with the wand?"

18:01

"I would go abroad."

18:05

"Not that I hate Turkey."

18:11

"But life is getting harder
as a refugee in this place."

18:18

"Without citizenship, even a university degree
won't let me work."

18:30

It is a reality that they have no control over.

18:36

"You're useless without citizenship."

18:50

"Even if you're educated,
it's hard to get citizenship."

19:03

"My dream's nearly impossible.
So, for now I'll continue performing."

19:09

"Then one day, I might have an opportunity."

19:27

It's the first day of their big show.

19:37

They're heading out to areas stricken by the earthquake of February 2023.

19:43

It's a tour of three provinces over three days.

19:51

Today the performance takes place in Diyarbakir, one of the worst-hit cities.

20:04

Their stage today is among the rows of temporary houses.

20:20

Nine months have passed since the earthquake, but about 900 people still live in temporary housing.

20:29

Life in instability is weighing heavily, especially on the children.

20:40

"Sometimes he snaps and loses control."

20:51

Many children are struggling with school and making friends, unable to adjust to the new environment.

21:02

Pınar and her group have been performing in the affected provinces since immediately after the disaster.

21:12

"The circus is here!"

21:44

Now, it's showtime.

22:06

The circus manager is in tears.

22:09

They have fired their magician, and they don't know what to do.

22:26

Then appears Rafik, the failed magician who was fired from the circus.

22:32

His plan is to disguise himself as someone else to get his job back.

22:50

And looks aren't the only thing that's changed.

22:52

His hard work pays off, and he has turned into a true magician.

22:59

"You're hired!"

23:02

"Yes! I got the job!"

23:07

But then...

23:09

"You're a fake!"

23:12

"No, I'm not."

23:13

"You are!"

23:16

"No, I'm not."

23:18

One member is suspicious.

23:27

"You're a fake."

23:38

"Still a fake."

23:48

"You're a real magician."

24:00

He makes it through... this time, with the help of a little bit more than just magic.

24:08

Now the climax.

24:10

One of their friends has turned into a monster, and is out of control.

24:15

Just when all hope is lost...

24:19

they stumble upon Rafik, who had just woken up, and has not yet disguised himself.

24:25

"It's Rafik!"

24:28

"It was a lie!"

24:31

"A fake! Just as I said."

24:34

"I'm no fake!
I really practiced in Paris."

24:38

"I'll turn him back to normal."

24:41

"Abracadabra!"

24:58

"You're a true magician!"

25:06

The magician Rafik proves himself to the others, and wins back their trust as one of their friends.

25:21

"It was awesome!"

25:23

"I loved it!"

25:26

"You were really cool."

25:30

"You too."

25:38

"The kids give me happiness."

25:42

"And that happiness makes me feel alive."

25:52

'It's all worth it when a child says
"I want to be like you."'

26:01

"I feel like I've become somebody."

26:18

Pınar and the circus continued their tour, bringing cheers and smiles wherever they went.

26:50

Rafik is back in Mardin.

27:01

"Which way is Syria?"

27:03

"That way."

27:05

"Beyond that city."

27:08

"That way too."

27:15

"When the country settles,

27:19

and if my friends are alive,
I might return."

27:25

"The world can be a better place.
And I want to help that happen."
