Second-round applications open for housing assistance

Officials in quake-hit Ishikawa Prefecture are inviting people whose homes have been damaged to apply for housing assistance. It is the second round of applications since the New Year's Day disaster.

A total of 190 units have been made available. That includes 88 prefectural housing units in seven cities, including Kanazawa, Nanao, and Komatsu, and 102 public housing units originally built for government employees.

They are being offered to people whose homes are no longer inhabitable. Tenants who make successful applications can stay for up to one year. Rent and parking are free, but residents are responsible for utilities and common service fees.

Tenants can stay for up to one year, in principle.

Move-in dates start around February 16 and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

One man in his 70s whose house in Suzu City was almost completely destroyed made an application with Kanazawa City, the municipal region where he took refuge.

"I chose housing close to Suzu City. I hope to be able to visit Suzu City often as I have to clean up my former home and tend the fields," he said. "Just being able to live with my wife is the best thing."

The prefectural government is planning to provide a total of about 300 public housing units. During the first round in January, 45 were filled within about two days.
