Disaster waste collection begins in Ishikawa Pref.

Residents and clean-up crews in parts of Ishikawa Prefecture have started hauling away broken furniture and other household detritus from the New Year's Day earthquake.

Suzu City

Officials in Suzu City say 4,815 homes sustained some level of damage in the quake.

The city has opened a storage site in the parking lot at Hachigasaki Beach where residents can drop off damaged furniture, appliances and other items between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

One man in his 60s said his house is "still a mess, so I brought what I could to clean up. I'm just glad I have a place to throw things away."

Wajima City

In Wajima, roughly 2,000 homes suffered some degree of damage.

Contractors are working their way through the city, loading desks, chests of drawers, appliances and other items onto trucks and transporting them to temporary storage sites.

City officials have asked residents not to make drop-offs themselves, but to leave damaged items out on the street with a note instead.

One young resident said his family has spent an entire month cleaning. "The inside of our house is still a mess, but now that the collection has started I think we can look ahead a little."
