Vehicle check extension for quake-hit prefectures

Japan's transport ministry has announced another extension to the deadline for vehicle checks in the prefectures of Ishikawa, Toyama, and parts of Niigata, due to road damage from the January 1 earthquake.

The ministry originally offered a 12-day grace period to motorists who were due to take their vehicles in for an inspection in the aftermath of the quake. Now it says that for all vehicles whose current certification is due to expire between January 1 and February 8, owners have until February 9 to get them checked.

The change also applies to vehicles from outside the affected areas that have traveled to the region to help with disaster relief and other activities.

Ministry officials say they will consider pushing back the deadline again if the situation requires it.

This information is current as of January 10, 2024.
