UN condemns mosque attack in Afghanistan

The United Nations is calling for the protection of Shia Muslims after gunmen stormed a mosque in Afghanistan and killed at least five people.

The attack happened on Monday in the western province of Herat. Authorities under the Taliban interim government say a child was among those killed. Three people were wounded.

Reuters reports that Islamic State militants claimed responsibility. The militants see Shia Muslims as their enemy and often target them.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack, and called for urgent measures to ensure the safety of Shia communities.
