With the sea to the south and north, and mountains in between, Hyogo Prefecture is said to be a microcosm of Japan. For hundreds of years, it has been an important stop on the route between the western part of the country and the capital. The prefecture suffered staggering damage in 1995, when an earthquake jolted Kobe and other large cities. The recovery, however, has been a success story, and the area is now filled with tourists.
