Venetia makes a visit to Hokkaido. She first calls on Hidetaka Matsubara in Minami-furano. The quality of the local timber prompted him to relocate and set up a workshop where he crafts wooden canoes. Matsubara canoes in the summer, and goes dog-sledding in the winter. Venetia visits the workshop and is taken out on to Lake Kanayama to enjoy the lush surroundings. Venetia next calls on the garden designer Sayuki Ueno, who keeps an English-style garden in Asahikawa, which has been adapted to suit Hokkaido's climate. Venetia is very taken with it, and by the Hokkaido lifestyle where people live in harmony with nature.
