NKT cells serve as the queen bee of the immune system. The other immune cells are like worker bees, and can't function effectively without the NKT cells. Without NKT cells, humans would have been defenseless against infectious diseases, and could have become extinct. NKT cells were discovered in 1986 by a Japanese researcher.
