Explanations

English

Capsule toys have created a buzz on social media, becoming popular among adults and international visitors.

Explanation

Capsule toys also go by the names “Gacha Gacha,” “Gashapon,” and more. They’re sold in coin-operated vending machines. Put in a few hundred yen, twist the handle, and a random toy comes out.
Like the English word “capsule,” the katakana loanword 「カプセル(kapuseru)」 is derived from a Latin word meaning “small box.” It refers to a small case or container.
「広がる(hirogaru)」 means “to become spread out in size or scope.” So in this context it refers to the fact that capsule toys have become popular on social media. If someone is making a conscious effort to spread or popularize something, we say 「広める(hiromeru)」. For instance, 「会社が宣伝をして、おもちゃを広めた(kaisha ga senden o shite, omocha o hirometa)」 “The company promoted the toys by advertising them.”

Explanations

English

The company plans to set these machines up at 100 locations by the 2023 fiscal year.

Explanation

In Japanese 「2023 年(nisen-nijuu-san-nen)」 refers to the calendar year, while 「2023 年度(nisen-nijuu-san-nendo)」 refers to the fiscal or financial year. The calendar year starts on January 1 and ends on December 31. The fiscal year, or 「年度(nendo)」 , is an accounting period for which a government or business records its income and spending for budget purposes. In Japan, the fiscal year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31 the following year.
「年度」 can also refer to the “academic” or “school year.” The Japanese school year generally begins in April and ends in March of the following year. The term 「年度」 is commonly used in daily life, so be careful not to get it confused with the calendar year.
