Explanations

teacher

English

In February of this year, a sixth-grade schoolgirl suddenly collapsed during basketball practice at a gym.

Explanation

「体育(taiiku)」 means “physical education.” It’s a subject taught in schools that focuses on developing physical fitness and healthy lifestyle habits. Classes are often held outdoors on a playground or athletic field. Other times – when it rains, for example – activities take place indoors in a 「体育館」, that is, a “gym” or “gymnasium.” 「体育館」 can refer not only to school gyms but to similar indoor sports facilities run by a municipality.

English

The coach and parents watching the practice used an AED and also performed chest compressions. Then, her heart started beating, and she later recovered.

Explanation

心臓(shinzoo)」 means “heart,” that is, the organ that pumps blood throughout the body. The kanji for 「しん(心)」 can also be read 「こころ」. 「こころ」 is an abstract notion that refers to the heart in an emotional or spiritual sense, as well as “the mind” or “the psyche.”

Explanation

「消防(shooboo)」 means “firefighting” – the process of extinguishing fires and preventing them from spreading. In Japanese we call firefighters 「消防士(shoobooshi)」 and fire engines 「消防車(shooboosha)」.
「賞(shoo)」 means “prize.” A 「賞状(shoojoo)」 is a “certificate of merit” – a document that recognizes the achievements of an individual or group. In today’s news story, the bystanders who saved the unconscious girl’s life received certificates of appreciation.

The AED Foundation of Japan says, “Some may hesitate to use an AED because they’re worried about catching the coronavirus. Placing a cloth or handkerchief over the unconscious person’s mouth will reduce the risk of infection. If you find someone collapsed, please use an AED immediately.”

Explanation

AEDs can be used by anyone to help someone in cardiac arrest. As you wait for the paramedics to arrive, you can increase the victim’s chances of survival by using an AED if there is one nearby.

Explanation

An repeated the sound she heard, 「じょう…?」. This is a way to confirm a word you didn’t understand or couldn’t catch in the previous conversation. In this simple way, you can convey to the other person what you didn’t understand and what it is that you want to confirm. It is an important strategy to receive help smoothly from the person you are having the conversation with.

Explanation

An is asking Kazue for confirmation on what to do next. The usage of 「よね」 at the end of a sentence implies that you are unsure about your understanding or thought. Everyone must have had a situation where you think you understand everything but worried whether it is really correct. In such a case, using 「よね」 will be a good way to see if you are right.
「よね」 came up previously and we learned a different usage of 「よね」 where it’s used to show agreement with the person you are having the conversation with.
