Hokushin Itto-ryu - The Roots of Kendo *RERUN
We explore the samurai roots of the globally popular sport of kendo, whose development was deeply influenced by the Hokushin Itto-ryu school of swordsmanship founded by legendary master Chiba Shusaku. In Japan's feudal period, wielding a sword was a matter of life and death. As the country eventually transitioned to more peaceful times, the sword skills of the samurai became a path for personal development, with numerous schools each advancing their own approach to teaching the art. We speak with the present-day head of Hokushin Itto-ryu about the school's lasting impact on kendo.
