Baseball - Samurai Japan
Japan won their first-ever baseball gold at Tokyo 2020, a landmark achievement that had eluded them for some 3 decades since the sport first graduated from demonstration event to official status at the Games. In the past, Japan's global baseball ambitions had often been stymied by Cuba, who traditionally dominated the event and beat Japan to the gold in the Atlanta 1996 final. Then in 2004 an all-star team carried the high hopes of Japan's fans to Athens, only to finish the tournament with bronze. We trace Japan's storied international baseball history.
