Manufacturing World Japan

Reporter Brian Hughes is "On Site" this week for the Manufacturing World Exhibition. This huge event is all about things that make other things. It's a fascinating look at the technology of manufacturing and a glimpse at the developments we're likely to see in the near future. It may be very specialized, but it's also very interesting!

Manufacturing World Japan

Schedule: Jun. 21 - 23, 2017
Location: Tokyo Big Sight

Manufacturing World - an event literally on a global scale - is held three times a year. With thousands of international exhibitors, exchange between industry insiders, experts, and decision makers is the order of the day. This massive, and popular event is all about the technology that supports Japanese manufacturing; featuring the latest ideas from companies large and small. The energy of all the people and companies participating makes it seem clear that the manufacturing sector in Japan is still going strong despite the challenging marketplace; as is evidenced by all the great gear at this year's event. Highlights include a touchless gear system, a super-efficient laser marking machine, a hyper-accurate way to measure colors, a slicer that makes cuts measured in microns, a digital deposition welder, the hottest new 3D printer, and an innovative AR owner's manual for a futuristic ride.

Wooden Toys with Style and Soul

In a small workshop in Fukushima, you'll find a group of master woodcrafters known for their precise techniques and dedication to making products that are both appealing to children and safe for them. In this playful edition of "+Style," we'll take a hands-on look at their work. We'll also hear about their surprising connection with Italy.

Wooden Toys with Style and Soul

Minamiaizu in Fukushima prefecture has a long history of wood production, notably for the manufacturing of furniture. The local timber is also used to make lacquerware products. Wooden toy manufacturer, Mastro Geppetto, also calls this area home. With wood as their main material, the philosophy behind their toys' designs is for them to be durable, safe to play with and foster parent-child communication. Using hand-crafting as well as modern manufacturing techniques such as laser cutting, they produce toys that are supremely well made, with joints so precise that they literally can’t be seen by the naked eye. As it happens, the company also collaborates with an Italian maker of the same name. The creative director, Shuhei Tominaga, is an Italian-born Japanese who saw the potential in the local craftsmen. Blending style and safety, their toys are truly great gear.

Where the Next IoT Experts Are Born

There's a very unique IT school in Tokyo that is training students in much more than just programming. The man behind its development will show us around as we take a close look at the progressive campus that makes extensive use of the Internet of Things. Next stop, the future, on this week's educational "Special Report."

Tokyo recently gained a major new IT school with a stylish, modern campus. Named INIAD, this new faculty of Toyo University launched a dedicated campus this April in Akabanedai, an area in the north of the city. The dean, professor Ken Sakamura is a leading global researcher in embedded computer systems and the Internet of Things. He says that by offering computer-based research and diverse collaborations, the school aims to equip young people with the skills to shape the world's future. But INIAD, which is short for Information Networking for Innovation and Design, is about more than just training new programmers. The interactive instruction and programmable systems that are built into the campus itself are meant to help the next generation to do things that no one thought possible. The school itself is the IoT. What better place to get started on programming the future?
