At Restaurant Business Week, you can find the latest great gear designed to help restaurants and food suppliers give you a great meal. In this week's "On Site" join reporter and man about town, Akira Daniel Duncan, for a closer look.

Restaurant Business Week

Schedule: Aug. 30 - Sept. 1, 2016
Location: Tokyo Big Sight

Whether it's sushi, ramen, tempura, or okonomiyaki, there's surely something for everyone to love in the vast and varied world of Japanese cuisine. And the three pillars that support this amazing culinary tradition are the skill of the chef, the quality of the ingredients, and of course Japan's superior kitchen technology. For our coverage of Restaurant Business Week, we looked closely at all three. Many restaurant owners, buyers, and chefs from around the world are here to see the latest machines and technologies that will help them provide excellent food, drinks and services to their customers. Highlights from this fantastic fair of food and gourmet gadgetry include a super-speedy vacuum packer, an automatic sushi roll assistant, the latest in ramen soups and noodles, cutting-edge cutting machines, eco-friendly chopsticks, delicious dashi, and two new takes on Japanese sake.

The New Sensibilities of Sheet Metal

When you hear the words "sheet metal," fashion accessories are probably not the first things that come to mind. And yet in our "+Style" segment that's exactly what you'll find. A sheet metal company producing, among other stylish items, classic Japanese accessories. Check out the latest in stainless steel chic – made right here in Japan!

The New Sensibilities of Sheet Metal

Yamazaki Seisakusho is a sheet-metal processing factory located in Shizuoka Prefecture. At first glance, it looks like the kind of place that only makes heavy-duty steel products. But it turns out that they've added a new softer sensibility to their production line. Current CEO, Kaori Yamazaki, was at first reluctant to take over the company from her father. But after making up her mind to keep the family business in the family, she didn't stop there. In an effort to expand their business model, she created a new brand of kanazashi hair ornaments. These kinds of items were the foundation of Japan's traditional metalworking industry. Mrs. Yamazaki's daughter, now a candidate to become the next leader of the company, also works as a designer; helping to create all new accessories as well as amazing stainless steel furniture. Their work combines industry and fashion to make some truly great gear!

Speeding Up 3-D Scanning

In this installment of our "Special Report," join Tomoko Maeda for a visit to a company making a state-of-the-art body scanner. If you're trying to lose weight, looking for clothes that fit perfectly, or just want a 3-D model of yourself, this system is for you. Not only is it hyper-accurate, it is done - quite literally - in the blink of an eye.

Speeding Up 3-D Scanning

Spacevision is a university-launched venture company located in Tokyo's fashionable Ginza shopping district. But they don't sell clothing or jewelry. Their products are altogether more high-tech. Specifically, they've come up with a new 3-D body scanner that's easy to use and incredibly fast. Made up of three posts - two in the front and one in the back - and operated by a tablet PC, it can generate a full 3-D model of your body in just half a second; yielding super accurate results. Hideto Kameshima, the manager of R&D for Spacevision, is in charge of the development of this amazing apparatus. He believes that people will soon regularly be measuring their bodies with such systems in the way we currently check bodyweight using a scale. On top of physical fitness or fashion applications, it could also be used in healthcare; potentially helping parents monitor their child's development.
