Decorating with Electronic Substrates

If you've ever visited Tokyo and tried to navigate the public transportation network, you know that it can be a little confusing. Most people think a map of the Tokyo rail system looks like a bowl of spaghetti. But to one Osaka-based company it looks like a whole new kind of art; as you'll see in our "Gadgets" segment this week.

Decorating with Electronic Substrates

Recently we came across an amazing new product. It's a smartphone case that features a map of the Tokyo railway system, which is said to be one of the most complex in the world. They image itself is great, but what makes it really special is the way it's made. The image is printed on a circuit board, and the circuitry represents the different train lines, and each little electronic component is a station. The firm producing these original and stylish items is an Osaka firm called Denshi-Gihan. According to Hiroki Kitayama, the company's CEO, the idea came from discarded circuit boards they made into accessories to give away at trade shows. A long-time worker in the electronic component industry, he was inspired by the beauty he saw in these once purely practical items to make a totally new kind of art. They also make maps of other cities, and so far the line has been a huge success!

The Masters of Green Tea Ice Cream

In this edition of our "Special Report," we bring you a great way to beat the heat with a product made from matcha - a powdered form of green tea. As well as being a beverage that's practically synonymous with Japanese culture, this kind of tea is a popular ingredient in many food products. Including an amazing new kind of gelato...

The Masters of Green Tea Ice Cream

Marushichi Seicha is a green tea producer based in beautiful Shizuoka prefecture. They do everything from operating their own tea plantation to processing the tea leaves into tea ready for brewing. They also own and operate a very special store that sells and amazing array of green-tea-based products. Of particular note is their matcha gelato, which is arranged from No.1 to No.7 in order of intensity of flavor. No.7 contains about seven times more matcha than standard matcha ice cream, an amount that had thus far been considered impossible to put into gelato. This ice cream was developed by company president Shigehiko Suzuki. He hopes to use this and other products to spread the love of matcha around the world. In fact, the company is the first in the Japanese tea industry to receive a Halal certification. Sounds like some very delicious - and very, very green - great gear!
