The Guardian Cats
Our reporter from Indonesia visits Tashiro Island, a small island in northeastern Japan. With more cats than people there, it is known as "Cat Island". The local fishermen once used the cats' behavior to predict the weather and fishing conditions, and treated them with care out of thanks for the safety and bountiful fish they were believed to provide. When the island was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the cats were vital in helping residents collect funds for reconstruction.
