Japan-born Anyango is the first woman in the world to play the nyatiti, a traditional stringed instrument played by the Luo people of Kenya. What drives her to spread its sound around the world?

This is a Luo phrase that literally translated means “rife with problems”.
This is also the title of a song that Okumu taught me.

The message behind the song is that we live in a world rife with problems, but we must come to terms with that and be strong and flexible. There’s something smart and stylish about that adaptableness, that spirit.
It’s the life wisdom of the Kenyan people—of the Luo people.
