Feeding the World with Edible Crickets

Japanese innovators are forging new initiatives in the quest to solve world problems. In this program, youths gather to discuss with them the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the future.

The world's population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. Anxiety over the encroaching food crisis has prompted a focus on edible insects as a solution. Watanabe Takahito, Tokushima University researcher and entrepreneur, is commercializing the breeding of crickets and striving to establish a sustainable food production system. Youths discuss with him how eating insects can contribute to achieving Zero Hunger, Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals, and what issues must be resolved.
