Tebako (Cosmetic Box) Design of Wheels Half-Submerged in Stream in Maki-e Lacquer and Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

We introduce a 12th century lacquerware box with a gently curving form, decorated with a cartwheel design set off by fine gold powder and mother-of-pearl inlay. It is a masterpiece of maki-e techniques, which rapidly advanced in the Heian Period.
