Japan's music idols once occupied a world far removed from their fans, who could only watch them on television or up on stage. In recent years, however, social media and livestreaming have bridged the gap between performers and their fans and created a greater sense of familiarity. That shift has prompted some in the industry to question what role idols should now play. Idols are said to symbolize the values of their era.
