Ukraine: Prelude to a Crisis

Ukrainians know the value of freedom. In the past, they have staged revolutions and given up nuclear arms in the name of democracy. But now, Russia's invasion is exposing the fragility of their independence like never before. This crisis is more than 30 years in the making – the culmination of an increasingly tense period dating back to the end of the Cold War.
