Takasebune: Part 1
The program introduces Takasebune (The Takase Boat), a historical fiction written by Ogai Mori, an influential figure in Japanese literature who was active about 100 years ago. Today's broadcast is part one. The story is set around the end of the 18th century during the Edo period, when a clear-cut class system existed in Japan. One day, a pale, scrawny criminal who was due to be exiled to a remote island steps onto a small Takase boat, which is designed to carry criminals to a port near the island. He appears calm and even seems to be enjoying himself. The intrigued escort officer starts asking him questions and gets some surprising answers. (This program was broadcast on April 20, 2019.)
