The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many facilities for the elderly to restrict visits between residents and their families. Visitors aren’t even allowed to hold the hands of their loved ones. We bring you stories of two families, who strive to stay hopeful in spite of the difficult circumstances. (This program was broadcast on May 3, 2022.)
In northern Japan, at a nursing home for the aged in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, a resident of an elderly care facility meets her grown-up children. Residents and visitors are only allowed to meet for up to 15 minutes, separated by glass.
A terminal-phase resident meets his sons through vinyl partitions. Only families of residents in the final stages of life are allowed inside after undergoing strict health condition checks.
