Firing Up the Colors of Nature
Clung to the mountainsides of Nagano is the small village of Naniai. Enraptured by the natural beauty of the area, UK-native potter Adam Smith moved here more than 20 years ago. Let's follow Adam as he takes on a new challenge with the people in his community.
Adam Smith is a potter. After moving to Japan, he was impressed by the glazes made from natural trees, plants or soil.
Adam's earthenware. He has been using various kinds of trees provided by locals to make glazes that represent Naniai's natural colors.
At the request of a local grape farmer, he works on wine cups, using a glaze made from grapevines.
The wine cups are finished. Adam enjoys wine tasting with neighbors, appreciating the collaboration of the produce and the earthenware.
