Our narrator's recently divorced daughter, Misaki, begged her parents to look after her child. Swallowing their frustration, our narrator, and his wife, granted the child a home. Sensing the loneliness behind her jubilant façade, they couldn't help but pity the girl. Our narrator's daughter and granddaughter were supposed to reunite at the local fireworks festival. Despite her promise, there was neither sight nor sound of Misaki at the festival.
