Sea urchins - LIFE BELOW WATER

These creatures are sea urchins in Shizugawa Bay in Minami-sanriku, Miyagi Prefecture. The ocean ecosystem here is still recovering from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Since then, the number of sea urchins has increased. They are eating up ‘arame’ seaweed, the staple food for abalone, which is a local specialty.
