Mt. Fuji's Ultra-Trail race was back on track in April of 2022 after a two-year hiatus brought about by the COVID pandemic. One of Japan's longest trail races, the event attracted runners. The 100-mile course through the ever-changing scenery of the World Heritage Site takes even the strongest contestant at least 20 hours of continuous running to complete. Trail-runners had to brave the precipitous rocky slopes and slippery mud that make the Mt. Fuji Ultra-Trail a uniquely challenging run. The thrilling competition drew a Who's Who of Japan's top trail runners, and a world ultramarathon champion who boasted, "a hundred miles is a short-distance race." Along with these stars, we meet female athletes who pulled off high-ranking finishing times to best many other runners of both sexes. We also encounter a legendary runner in his 50s who started at the back and overtook more than 1,000 rivals — all while partaking in friendly banter. Join us to witness the drama of runners pushing their limits in the beautiful setting of Mt. Fuji.

1,808 people have chosen to take part.
-
2m 27s
It's a long-awaited reunion.
-
2m 32s
So glad we're here!
-
2m 34s
I haven't seen my teammates
in three years. -
2m 39s
Finally! It's been
a long three years. -
2m 51s
At 3:30 PM, the UTMF begins for the first time in three years.
-
3m 04s
It's partly cloudy, and 23 degrees Celsius.
-
3m 08s
Perfect racing weather.
-
3m 15s
The UTMF doesn't head for Mt. Fuji's summit.
-
3m 19s
The trail leads around the foot of the mountain, and over neighboring peaks.
-
3m 25s
Starting south of Mt. Fuji, the course climbs around thirty mountains and peaks.
-
3m 31s
Runners have 44 hours to cover 158 kilometers.
-
3m 42s
The race gets off to a high-speed start.
-
3m 49s
The first group to leave includes Obara Masatoshi, the favorite to win.
-
3m 59s
In 2019, he came eighth in the world's most prestigious 100-mile race, the UTMB.
-
4m 07s
He's a top Japanese trail runner.
-
4m 11s
My goal is to compete with the
world's best. I'll work hard! -
4m 22s
Another top candidate is Doi Takashi.
-
4m 25s
He's a natural at running mountains and has always placed highly in the UTMF.
-
4m 31s
- How do you feel?
- Not sure yet. -
4m 37s
Doi is a firefighter, and head of a rescue team.
-
4m 41s
In his spare time, he's won countless mountain races.
-
4m 45s
He's confident in his ability to pick up the pace later in the race.
-
4m 50s
I'll stick to my plan
and run my own race. -
5m 07s
229 female runners are taking part in the race.
-
5m 18s
The favorite is Miyazaki Kimino, who works as a sports trainer in Tokyo.
-
5m 27s
She's placed highly in several international 100-mile races, improving every time.
-
5m 36s
Initial speed is key.
-
5m 41s
It's going well.
Thank you! -
5m 51s
The race begins with a long series of minor slopes and descents.
-
5m 55s
It's tough going.
-
5m 59s
Next is rocky terrain.
-
6m 01s
The trail changes rapidly, and runners must stay sharp.
-
6m 15s
An aid station at the 22-kilometer mark.
-
6m 19s
Volunteers prepare food and water.
-
6m 22s
The race is a long-awaited event for them as well.
-
6m 28s
The lead runner appears.
-
6m 35s
The first runner in three years is cause for excitement!
-
6m 48s
Doi and Obara arrive just seven seconds apart.
-
6m 59s
Obara doesn't stop to refuel, and keeps running.
-
7m 04s
Doi takes only water, and then heads straight out after Obara.
-
7m 12s
Obara, the favorite to win, has taken the lead.
-
7m 21s
45 minutes after the race begins, a crowd of runners stand at the start line.
-
7m 35s
As a COVID precaution, the runners have been split into four groups.
-
7m 40s
The final group begins to run.
-
7m 52s
The last group has set off.
-
7m 54s
And behind them...
-
7m 56s
Good luck!
-
7m 59s
The final runner to start: Kaburaki Tsuyoshi, a Japanese trail running legend.
-
8m 10s
In 2009, Kaburaki placed third in the UTMB, the highest place taken by any Japanese runner.
-
8m 19s
He blazed a path for other Japanese trail runners.
-
8m 25s
As head of the UTMF committee, he plays a key role in its management.
-
8m 31s
But this is the first time he'll run in it.
-
8m 35s
As a top-class runner, why is he starting from the very end?
-
8m 42s
In 2020 and '21, we had to
cancel at the last minute. -
8m 49s
I felt terrible about that.
-
8m 52s
I know how hard people work to prepare.
-
8m 56s
What you sacrifice
to run a hundred miles. -
9m 02s
I wanted to start at the back
and move forward. -
9m 10s
Talking to and encouraging
everyone along the way. -
9m 18s
Thank you, Kaburaki-san!
I've been waiting for you! -
9m 22s
He speaks to every person he meets.
-
9m 26s
― Where are you from?
- Okayama. -
9m 31s
Encouraging the runners spurs Kaburaki on.
-
9m 37s
- How old are you, sir?
- 68 years, 11 months. -
9m 40s
Good luck!
-
9m 53s
- Good luck, Obara-san!
- Thank you! -
9m 58s
28 kilometers.
-
9m 59s
The favorite Obara has widened the gap between himself and the second runner to two and a half minutes.
-
10m 06s
He's concerned about his time, as well as the win.
-
10m 10s
He's moving at a fast pace.
-
10m 14s
Meanwhile, firefighter Doi is in the group at third place.
-
10m 18s
He's feeling relaxed.
-
10m 21s
Obara's doing as I expected.
I'm holding back for now. -
10m 30s
Doi and Obara have been rivals in many races.
-
10m 34s
They're both enjoying the chance to meet and compete after three years.
-
10m 41s
I admire him.
He's looking at a world stage. -
10m 48s
I just want to get close
in the second half. -
10m 52s
And Obara?
-
10m 55s
Doi is very strong.
He almost never gives way. -
11m 01s
I can't wait to find out how
he's trained these two years. -
11m 16s
40 kilometers.
-
11m 18s
Somebody is closing in on Obara in first!
-
11m 27s
Ishikawa Yoshihiko.
-
11m 30s
He pulled out of the group around Doi to take solo third place.
-
11m 35s
And he also has an extraordinary record.
-
11m 40s
Ishikawa is a world champion who's won ten 200-kilometer ultra marathons in a row.
-
11m 55s
160 km is a fairly
short race for me. -
12m 05s
But Ishikawa's main focus is on ultra marathons which run on paved roads.
-
12m 14s
He wanted to test his skills on a very different trail run.
-
12m 21s
Ishikawa catches up to the second-place runner.
-
12m 32s
And overtakes him!
-
12m 35s
I don't want to lose.
I'm outside my comfort zone. -
12m 43s
The second aid station is at the 43-kilometer point.
-
12m 48s
Obara!
-
12m 51s
The first to arrive is Obara.
-
12m 56s
Runners can receive personal support at this station.
-
13m 00s
Obara is supported by a high-school classmate.
-
13m 03s
They exchange bottles efficiently.
-
13m 07s
Thank you.
Bye! -
13m 09s
He stays for two and a half minutes.
-
13m 13s
Two minutes after Obara leaves, Ishikawa arrives, in second place.
-
13m 20s
Yoshi! Over here!
-
13m 23s
He's supported by his wife, Miki.
-
13m 28s
Top runner came in
two minutes ago. -
13m 33s
She passes on the information fast, and has a secret weapon in store.
-
13m 46s
Our daughter's at home.
-
13m 48s
I hope these will keep him
going. Here, too! -
13m 55s
The picture gives Ishikawa a boost.
-
13m 59s
Alright, I'm off!
-
14m 03s
He chases after Obara.
-
14m 06s
He was better than I'd expected.
I think he's enjoying himself. -
14m 14s
The next section leads into the longest mountainous trail on the first half of the race.
-
14m 20s
A 15-kilometer path climbing five separate peaks.
-
14m 24s
Night-time trail running demands excellent technique.
-
14m 33s
Obara is in first.
-
14m 43s
Even he can't keep running up such a steep slope.
-
14m 52s
He seems to be struggling.
-
15m 00s
I'm on track,
but it's pretty tough. -
15m 15s
Ishikawa is strong on paved roads, but falls to third place in the mountains.
-
15m 24s
He puts on speed once the ascent evens out.
-
15m 27s
He's still got plenty of energy.
-
15m 38s
Obara's rival Doi is moving fast.
-
15m 42s
But there's someone right behind him.
-
15m 46s
Runner number 35 is making long strides to keep up with the fast-paced Doi.
-
15m 55s
Doi is a strong climber, but he's feeling pressured on this incline.
-
16m 02s
As Doi takes out some energy gel, 35 spurts ahead.
-
16m 12s
He quickly opens up a gap.
-
16m 21s
Number 35 has caught up to Ishikawa in third place.
-
16m 34s
He's looking to overtake him.
-
16m 38s
And he does! Check out that speed.
-
16m 42s
Just who is this mysterious runner?
-
16m 48s
I did it! Not too bad.
Feeling pretty good. -
17m 00s
Mamba Hajime.
-
17m 01s
It's his third UTMF, and his previous highest place was 22nd.
-
17m 08s
He's virtually unknown in Japan's running circles.
-
17m 13s
He picks up speed on the decline.
-
17m 16s
How is he so fast?
-
17m 25s
The 65-kilometer aid station.
-
17m 34s
The first to arrive is... number 35, Mamba.
-
17m 48s
He overtook seven top runners over 15 kilometers of mountainous trails.
-
17m 54s
A dark horse has emerged!
-
17m 59s
After drinking, he shoots off at top speed.
-
18m 05s
I'm really first?
That wasn't the plan! -
18m 12s
Mamba enjoys mountain climbing.
-
18m 14s
He took up trail running to strengthen his legs and back.
-
18m 18s
I often climb in winter
with a lot of heavy gear. -
18m 21s
But in the pandemic, I started
running local peaks. -
18m 27s
I think that's helped.
-
18m 33s
A new challenger has emerged during the race's three-year break.
-
18m 41s
But Mamba doesn't keep his position for long!
-
18m 44s
A runner appears, going at an astonishing speed!
-
18m 51s
He catches up to Mamba...
-
18m 58s
Leaving him behind before disappearing into the dark.
-
19m 03s
Who's this runner?
-
19m 06s
I'm finally in first place.
Just for now! -
19m 12s
Nishimura Hirokazu.
-
19m 16s
Nishimura is a father of five.
-
19m 20s
His kids always tell him to take first place!
-
19m 26s
But his best UTMF finish so far was 60th.
-
19m 31s
Can he keep up this pace?
-
19m 34s
If I want to win,
I need to take risks! -
19m 50s
1.5 kilometers behind him, Ishikawa is in third place, in the thick forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji.
-
20m 02s
Immediately behind him is Doi.
-
20m 12s
They're out of the woods.
-
20m 14s
And on a road: perfect for Ishikawa.
-
20m 28s
He quickly shoots fifty meters ahead of Doi.
-
20m 37s
I need to make up time here.
-
20m 44s
At the halfway point, Nishimura is in the lead, with Mamba two minutes behind.
-
20m 50s
They're followed by Ishikawa, Doi, and Obara - the three favorites to win.
-
21m 01s
Six kilometers behind them is the top female runner and women's favorite, Miyazaki Kimino.
-
21m 10s
She's well ahead of the closest female rival, and 47th overall.
-
21m 23s
- What's wrong?
- My foot's stuck. -
21m 28s
Here.
-
21m 35s
She offers a hand and moves on, keeping up a fast speed.
-
21m 43s
I want to see how far
I can get this time. -
21m 52s
Miyazaki wants to do more than be the fastest female runner.
-
21m 57s
Her true goal is to make it into the top 19 overall.
-
22m 04s
Being fastest woman here won't
put me on a global stage. -
22m 13s
It's about my overall rank.
-
22m 23s
Miyazaki is thinking of a world-class female runner.
-
22m 30s
Xiang Fuzhao, of China.
-
22m 33s
She was the fastest woman at the 2019 UTMF and placed 16th overall.
-
22m 41s
In the 2021 Thailand 100-mile race, Miyazaki lost to Xiang, taking second place.
-
22m 48s
Her rival told her something that changed her perspective.
-
22m 55s
She said, "I know we'll race
again on the global stage." -
23m 02s
I want to hone my skills
against her. -
23m 09s
Every stride forward helps her compete against the world's best.
-
23m 16s
Excuse me.
-
23m 20s
In her mind's eye, Miyazaki is chasing Xiang along the trail.
-
23m 28s
She arrives at the 65-kilometer aid station.
-
23m 31s
She's 70 minutes behind the top runner.
-
23m 37s
Miyazaki passed four male runners during the mountainous section.
-
23m 42s
She's now 43rd.
-
23m 47s
Now I just have to stay awake.
-
23m 51s
I'm off!
-
23m 55s
To make 19th place, she has to overtake 24 more people.
-
24m 07s
Eight hours into the race.
-
24m 12s
The runners hoping to reach the finish line
climb the mountain in the dark. -
24m 26s
Trail-running legend Kaburaki Tsuyoshi appears.
-
24m 33s
Thank you!
-
24m 37s
He speaks to the runners and volunteers he meets.
-
24m 48s
- It's Kaburaki-san!
- Great work! -
24m 54s
I started running for the UTMF.
Took me eight years! -
25m 03s
Today's your chance, then!
Make it to the finish. -
25m 12s
He began in last place, and has overtaken over a thousand people.
-
25m 19s
Hang in there! You're okay!
-
25m 29s
I spoke to so many folks.
-
25m 37s
People seemed to enjoy it,
which made me happy. -
25m 53s
At the 78-kilometer mark, one runner is in trouble.
-
25m 59s
I started coughing.
My lungs are in agony. -
26m 07s
Obara came down with COVID-19 three weeks before the race.
-
26m 12s
He recovered and was permitted to take part, but his lungs are still damaged.
-
26m 24s
I'm so frustrated I can't
achieve my goal. -
26m 37s
My legs are fine to keep going.
-
26m 47s
Thank you.
-
26m 49s
Obara withdraws at the 116-kilometer mark.
-
27m 43s
The race reaches its climax at the 130 km point.
-
27m 47s
Runners now face their biggest challenge - Mt. Shakushi.
-
27m 51s
It's been the downfall of many runners.
-
27m 56s
The first to begin climbing its slopes is father-of-five Nishimura.
-
28m 01s
Look at that incline!
-
28m 04s
He needs both hands to inch his way up.
-
28m 12s
Whoa!
-
28m 17s
This is incredibly tough.
I'm running on empty. -
28m 24s
Can't wait to ring that bell
at the peak. -
28m 31s
What keeps Nishimura going when he's low on energy?
-
28m 36s
My family, of course.
I remember videos they've sent. -
28m 48s
Good luck, Dad!
-
28m 52s
Win first place!
-
28m 57s
We love you!
-
29m 04s
Is that it? Seriously?
I've finally made it. -
29m 13s
Nishimura arrives at the summit of Mt. Shakushi.
-
29m 17s
Do you have a regular
camera? Is that one? -
29m 25s
Nishimura is past the worst, and has just 24 kilometers left to the finish line.
-
29m 40s
In second place is Mamba, with bib number 35.
-
29m 45s
He's fallen behind in the second half, and is 20 minutes behind Nishimura.
-
29m 51s
I'm getting so tired.
But I can still move. -
29m 57s
I'm still climbing.
Just very, very slowly. -
30m 12s
In third place is the climbing firefighter Doi.
-
30m 17s
Ishikawa pulled ahead on the road but was overtaken on the slopes, and now Doi is well ahead.
-
30m 27s
- "What are you thinking about?"
- I'm having fun on Mt. Shakushi! -
30m 36s
The harder the trail, the more Doi enjoys it - he's about to prove his mettle.
-
30m 43s
He's only seven minutes behind second-place runner Mamba.
-
30m 51s
At 7:33 AM, Mamba reaches the peak of Mt. Shakushi in second place.
-
31m 05s
Just 160 seconds later, Doi does the same.
-
31m 17s
Having shortened the gap by four minutes during his ascent, Doi has Mamba in his sights.
-
31m 24s
He uses his stamina to put on a spurt.
-
31m 31s
The last aid station is at the 142-kilometer mark.
-
31m 42s
Nishimura makes it there first after descending Mt. Shakushi.
-
31m 49s
- How much further?
- 15 kilometers. -
31m 53s
Still a fair way to go.
-
31m 58s
Can he hold off the others to the end?
-
32m 06s
The second runner appears.
-
32m 09s
It's Doi - he overtook Mamba.
-
32m 17s
He's 32 minutes behind Nishimura.
-
32m 20s
Yet Doi has always outstripped Nishimura in previous UTMF races.
-
32m 27s
Can he do the same today?
-
32m 33s
The temperature has risen to 28°C.
-
32m 40s
So hot!
-
32m 46s
The heat takes its toll on the runners.
-
32m 57s
That feels good!
-
33m 08s
Top female runner Miyazaki Kimino is running alone.
-
33m 16s
She wants to make the top 19 and continues to overtake male runners, taking her up the ranks.
-
33m 38s
She overtakes someone else to reach 22nd place.
-
33m 42s
Just three more to go.
-
33m 45s
However...
-
33m 48s
My legs are done.
Prickling pain, and no speed. -
33m 56s
Miyazaki wants to compete against runners like Xiang on a global stage.
-
34m 01s
She grits her teeth against the severe pain and keeps running.
-
34m 09s
The top runners are now at the 144-kilometer mark, and climbing the final peak of Mt. Shimoyama.
-
34m 21s
Nishimura is walking.
-
34m 25s
His feet are starting to drag, and he's worried about Doi behind him.
-
34m 32s
Doi always pulls out
the stops in the second half. -
34m 38s
I was walking,
but maybe he's running? -
34m 44s
I was on edge.
-
34m 52s
I've got to give it my all.
-
34m 55s
But even Doi is at his limit.
-
34m 59s
He's driven forward by thoughts of Obara, who was forced to pull out.
-
35m 06s
I can't believe it.
-
35m 15s
We've run so many
100-mile races together. -
35m 23s
I want him to be proud
of what I achieve today. -
35m 33s
Alright, I can do this!
-
35m 41s
Nishimura flees.
-
35m 50s
And Doi pursues.
-
35m 55s
Who will win?
-
35m 59s
Our first runner is here!
-
36m 10s
It's Nishimura!
-
36m 17s
It's an unexpected win for a runner whose previous top finish was 60th.
-
36m 22s
His children's encouragement saw him through to the end.

36m 25s
Congratulations!
-
36m 35s
His time was 18 hours and 15 minutes.
-
36m 39s
It's a record for a Japanese runner, and makes him the first UTMF victor in three years!
-
36m 47s
I'm so relieved.
My kids will be proud! -
36m 53s
Doi may be second, but he seems pleased.
-
36m 57s
So fun! Running with
everyone after three years. -
37m 02s
I took it for granted,
but it's so special. -
37m 10s
I'm over the moon.
-
37m 15s
Dark horse Mamba caused quite a stir, and won third place.
-
37m 29s
Meanwhile, ultra-marathon champion Ishikawa struggles to climb Mt. Shakushi.
-
37m 39s
Mt. Shakushi is so tough.
Much worse than I expected. -
37m 48s
A painful lesson in the difference between road- and trail-running.
-
37m 54s
The trail keeps changing.
-
37m 57s
It uses so much brain power
to keep up. It's exhausting. -
38m 06s
I can switch off on roads
and run mechanically. -
38m 13s
It's easy. But trail running
is really tough. -
38m 25s
Ouch!
-
38m 26s
He tries to run, but trips on a tree root.
-
38m 31s
His feet keep dragging.
-
38m 40s
A runner approaches from behind.
-
38m 48s
Ishikawa doesn't have the energy to catch up.
-
38m 59s
Every step is agony for his thighs.
-
39m 06s
Just making it down these steps is painful.
-
39m 29s
My legs won't work.
-
39m 33s
- "They hurt?"
- They won't obey me. -
39m 52s
Ultra-marathon champion Ishikawa took up the challenge of trail running.
-
40m 01s
It was a tough race, but he made it to the end.
-
40m 11s
He finishes in sixth place.
-
40m 17s
Honestly, it wasn't much fun.
I liked running with new faces. -
40m 30s
But enjoyment and excitement
are pretty different. -
40m 34s
I felt exhilarated,
but I didn't enjoy myself. -
40m 39s
Those are my honest feelings.
-
40m 43s
20 hours after the start of the race.
-
40m 49s
Miyazaki is climbing the final peak, Mt. Shimoyama.
-
40m 53s
She's currently 22nd overall.
-
41m 02s
Her legs are beyond tired.
-
41m 06s
She doesn't have the strength to run.
-
41m 16s
She sees another runner ahead.
-
41m 31s
This last bit is the worst.
-
41m 40s
She's now 21st.
-
41m 42s
Just two more to reach 19th place.
-
41m 51s
I can barely put one foot
in front of the other. -
42m 01s
Miyazaki knows that if she stops, she won't be able to start up again.
-
42m 09s
Sheer grit keeps her going.
-
42m 21s
Now she's 20th.
-
42m 24s
Just one more person.
-
42m 53s
She passes him.
-
42m 56s
She's made it to her goal of 19th place.
-
43m 07s
I didn't stop!
-
43m 13s
Miyazaki made it up Mt. Shimoyama without pausing once.
-
43m 51s
She gave her all to reach her goal.
-
44m 09s
It's all about confidence
and pacing in the first half. -
44m 17s
I lacked confidence, but
managed it at the end today. -
44m 24s
If I train for more stamina in the
second half, then I can do this. -
44m 32s
I can't wait.
-
44m 37s
23 hours after starting, this man is facing his greatest challenge.
-
44m 45s
All this after 130 km!
-
44m 51s
The legend, Kaburaki Tsuyoshi.
-
44m 54s
He started in last place and has passed over 1,500 runners.
-
45m 02s
You're doing great.
-
45m 05s
I'm dizzy in the heat.
Hope I make it. -
45m 11s
- You'll be okay.
- Really? -
45m 17s
- It's all in the mind from here.
- I'm dizzy. -
45m 21s
If you're dizzy, make sure
to eat and rest. -
45m 30s
There's still lots of time.
-
45m 33s
Take it easy.
-
45m 35s
Don't come this far
to wipe out. You'll make it. -
45m 42s
Kaburaki cheers on all the runners he sees.
-
45m 45s
He's nearly done himself.
-
45m 50s
Good luck!
-
46m 03s
Kaburaki is approaching the finish line.
-
46m 15s
The last runner to start is the 184th runner to cross the finish line.
-
46m 27s
He spoke to over 1,600 runners on his way.
-
46m 40s
I talked more than
I have in years. -
46m 44s
Not sure 100-mile races
are meant to be so chatty! -
46m 54s
I really enjoyed it.
-
47m 03s
The regular runners hoping to complete the course are reaching the finish line.
-
47m 13s
I made it!
-
47m 14s
Each runner savors this moment after three years away.
-
47m 21s
Didn't think I'd make it.
I'm overwhelmed. -
47m 28s
41 hours after the start, the final runner is making his last ascent.
-
47m 37s
"You're almost there."
-
47m 39s
That's right.
This is the final mountain. -
47m 45s
"Why take part in UTMF?"
-
47m 49s
It's not very deep.
I was just curious if I could! -
48m 16s
It's nice to have everyone
cheering me on. -
48m 28s
Thank you very much!
-
48m 34s
The first UTMF in three years was completed by 1,470 people.
-
48m 43s
This unforgiving, beautiful race around Mt. Fuji is back.
