Nestled in rural Niigata Prefecture is a village of traditional Kominka homes that have been renovated by German architect Karl Bengs since he moved to the area with his wife, Tina. In the winter of 2021, the village found itself under more than 4 meters of snow after the heaviest snowfall in 40 years. The blanketing of snow posed various challenges, but the community made the most of the winter wonderland. There was Tina's special stew, pizza baked in a wood-burning stove, and scenes of children frolicking outside. As Karl walked along in the freshly fallen snow, he said to himself, "This is the most beautiful village in the world." After the harshness of winter, the arrival of spring offers fresh joys. One woman who recently moved to the area prepares items for a picnic with the elderly women of the village. Join us as Karl and Tina take us on a tour of winter life and show us how the villagers prepare for the season of new beginnings.

0m 19s
This house, called Sokaku-an, was restored by a German architectural designer, Karl Bengs.
-
0m 29s
Karl lives here with his wife, Christina.
-
0m 32s
Inside, it's warm, even in winter.
-
0m 40s
Where did you find this?
-
0m 43s
Right nearby.
I got it and made the decoration. -
0m 47s
Insect jumped out.
-
0m 58s
I made it for its apartment.
-
1m 06s
In this season, hemmed in by snow, they spend a lot more time inside.
-
1m 11s
Even so, winter has its charms.
-
1m 18s
If you open the window,
the nice cold air comes in. -
1m 23s
It's beautiful, isn't it?
Like a painting. -
1m 33s
Captivated by the traditional houses that Karl has renovated, the people who live in them enjoy the winter.
-
1m 44s
It feels very nice.
-
1m 48s
Okay. Good texture.
-
1m 53s
This woman has made "yubeshi," a sweet that requires exposure to the cold wind.
-
2m 01s
It's really delicious.
-
2m 10s
The children in the village romp around in the snow.
-
2m 18s
At the beginning of the year, the Fire Festival is held.
-
2m 22s
People pray for the safe unfolding of the new year.
-
2m 28s
Great sound.
That's a good sign. -
2m 36s
And then comes spring.
-
2m 38s
The people in the village head off together in search of the flavors of the new season.
-
2m 51s
This can be eaten raw.
You haven't tried it yet, right? -
2m 56s
Here.
-
2m 58s
It's exciting.
The snow melts and green appears. -
3m 06s
From winter to spring, we followed the lives of the people in this miraculous village.
-
3m 24s
Taketokoro in Niigata Prefecture is in an area that has some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world.
-
3m 37s
This is a morning in January.
-
3m 39s
After falling for several days in a row, the snow has finally let up.
-
3m 48s
The residents face a constant battle against the snow.
-
3m 54s
Karl, good morning.
It's really snowed a lot this year. -
4m 03s
This is my first time.
-
4m 05s
I've never seen four meters
pile up in one week. -
4m 10s
Four meters in a year
isn't unusual. -
4m 17s
The old-timers say
it's the first in 35 years. -
4m 32s
The snow clogged this up
so the floor heating didn't work well. -
4m 46s
In the kitchen, Tina's making something.
-
4m 51s
Stew. Country stew.
-
4m 57s
Long cooking, but very delicious.
-
5m 00s
It's chicken stew.
-
5m 09s
Cumin, turmeric, paprika.
-
5m 19s
And garlic.
-
5m 22s
This is a Japanese citrus powder.
It's so good. -
5m 28s
Yuzu.
-
5m 30s
Finally.
-
5m 33s
Taste nice, delicious.
-
5m 39s
Tina's mother was of Italian descent.
-
5m 42s
Tina freely adds Japanese ingredients to recipes handed down from her mother.
-
5m 55s
It's a chicken and tomato stew with plenty of spices.
-
6m 03s
Cheers.
-
6m 13s
It has cumin in it.
-
6m 16s
As always, it's delicious.
-
6m 21s
My mother used to cook this.
-
6m 26s
My mother used to cook very nice Italian dishes.
-
6m 32s
She was a great cook.
-
6m 35s
It's good because it's warm.
-
6m 37s
Especially the soup when it's very hot. Then it's OK.
-
6m 55s
Karl's greatest pleasure in the winter is snowshoeing through the fresh snow.
-
7m 07s
Ah, my back hurts.
-
7m 14s
He heads into the woods, where the snow shows no sign of footprints.
-
7m 28s
The best thing is when I'm walking alone.
I like walking and thinking. -
7m 39s
I have nothing planned out,
so I just try to clear my head. -
8m 05s
This is a cherry tree.
-
8m 10s
It's about three meters tall.
-
8m 14s
- "So it snowed three meters?"
- That's right. -
8m 23s
It feels good.
-
8m 28s
A bird is chirping a little.
-
8m 31s
Very nice.
-
8m 35s
It's quiet here but not lonely at all.
-
8m 45s
Karl says that the scenery in Taketokoro makes him appreciate the unique beauty of the snowy mountains in Japan.
-
8m 54s
My hometown, Berlin,
has no mountains. -
8m 58s
Japan has such gentle scenery,
with snow and mountains. -
9m 08s
It's really beautiful.
-
9m 10s
It's hard to find such wonderful scenery
anywhere else in the world. -
9m 27s
Karl has led a quiet life in Taketokoro ever since moving here in his 50s.
-
9m 37s
But the first half of his life was tough.
-
9m 45s
Karl was born in Berlin in 1942.
-
9m 51s
His father had been killed fighting in World War II two months earlier.
-
10m 00s
When he was 19, the Cold War between the East and the West intensified.
-
10m 07s
Just before the Berlin Wall was built, Karl managed to swim across the river from East Berlin and make a narrow escape to the West.
-
10m 19s
It was a really tough situation.
I risked my life for freedom. -
10m 30s
My motivation for escaping was
that I didn't want to be conscripted. -
10m 41s
My grandfather and father were
both killed in wars. -
10m 46s
I never wanted to die in a war.
-
10m 52s
By going from the East to the West,
I wouldn't be drafted. -
11m 00s
There was no conscription
in the West. -
11m 07s
My mother and sisters
were stuck in the East. -
11m 14s
I couldn't see them for decades.
-
11m 21s
Karl was interested in Japanese culture, and came to Japan for the first time when he was 24.
-
11m 31s
He was fascinated by Japan's traditional wooden buildings.
-
11m 39s
He started a business using Japanese-style architectural techniques in Germany, and traveled back and forth between Germany and Japan.
-
11m 51s
When he was in his 50s, he began looking for a place to live after he retired.
-
11m 57s
He came upon present-day Sokaku-an by chance.
-
12m 03s
First, he dismantled the run-down house.
-
12m 07s
He then rebuilt it into a modern one, keeping the original post and beam framework.
-
12m 26s
Karl intended Sokaku-an to be the last home he and Tina would live in.
-
12m 31s
He built a study for her in the attic.
-
12m 37s
What are you doing?
-
12m 44s
Now? Editing some photographs.
-
12m 47s
She's arranging some photographs
she took in the summer. -
12m 55s
I like the flowers of my garden.
-
12m 58s
The snow is melting, the snow is going away.
-
13m 02s
I prepare my garden.
-
13m 04s
I love my garden.
-
13m 10s
What's that yellow decoration on the window?
-
13m 15s
This decoration I made is the sun.
-
13m 19s
You mean this one?
-
13m 21s
For me, it's the sunshine.
-
13m 24s
Very comfortable.
-
13m 29s
It's very nice. I like it.
-
13m 34s
This is Tina's haven as she looks forward to the springtime sun.
-
13m 47s
Karl has renovated nine Japanese-style houses in Taketokoro.
-
13m 52s
They have attracted new residents to the village, which was rapidly becoming depopulated.
-
14m 03s
The deep red walls of this house stand out in the white snow.
-
14m 08s
It's known as the Rouge House.
-
14m 14s
Good morning.
-
14m 16s
Kanai Fusa moved here from Tokyo.
-
14m 22s
She bought this house ten years ago.
-
14m 25s
This is the first time she's experienced such a heavy snowfall.
-
14m 32s
Don't you think this looks fun?
-
14m 35s
It's really fun.
-
14m 42s
Snow is great.
It falls in completely different ways. -
14m 48s
- "It changes every day?"
- Every day it's totally different. -
14m 53s
One day it's fine powder snow.
-
14m 59s
Or huge snowflakes.
Or it dances around with the wind. -
15m 05s
I don't know
how many types there are. -
15m 11s
Every day it's very different.
-
15m 21s
In Tokyo, Kanai owned a company that edited books and magazines.
-
15m 26s
She worked without rest.
-
15m 32s
When she turned 70, she put a period on her work in the city.
-
15m 36s
She decided to move to the countryside.
-
15m 41s
There are two big walnut trees
near my house. -
15m 47s
The walnuts fall in the autumn.
-
15m 50s
Squirrels come out
to the road to eat them. -
16m 00s
Nobody bothers to pick them up.
But I find it delightful. -
16m 06s
I can gather my fill of these luxurious
goodies right outside my house. -
16m 14s
It's awesome.
-
16m 23s
I'm making walnut cookies today.
-
16m 28s
- "Do you often make sweets?"
- Yes, I do. -
16m 31s
There's no sweets shop nearby
so I have to make them. -
16m 36s
I thought I'd be bored in the country,
but I'm always busy. -
16m 43s
I spend all day here in the kitchen.
-
16m 52s
I made this cookie board myself.
-
16m 55s
- "You made it?"
- Yes. -
17m 00s
The cookies will be 5 mm thick.
-
17m 06s
This is 5 mm.
-
17m 08s
They'll naturally turn out 5 mm thick.
-
17m 17s
They're going to be pretty delicious.
-
17m 24s
All done.
-
17m 37s
Mmm, crispy.
-
17m 42s
They turned out well.
They're good. -
17m 50s
Her favorite time is when she takes a moment to look out the window at the snowy landscape.
-
17m 58s
I'm in amazing shape.
Emotionally. -
18m 04s
I become calm.
-
18m 08s
I feel a warmth
when I look at the snow. -
18m 17s
I don't feel cold.
-
18m 23s
It's quiet and warming.
-
18m 35s
Kanai takes photographs of scenes she discovers and sends them to friends in Tokyo.
-
18m 49s
Each day I feel animated, excited.
-
18m 56s
There's never a day when I feel,
"It's snowing again." -
19m 01s
Maybe I'm a child of nature.
-
19m 17s
This winter, the heavy snow continues.
-
19m 20s
Over the last three days, more than 70 centimeters has fallen.
-
19m 26s
The temperature has dropped to minus eight degrees Celsius.
-
19m 40s
Hello.
-
19m 47s
The front door is frozen shut.
-
19m 52s
An elderly man in his 80s lives here alone.
-
19m 57s
I'll bring some hot water.
-
20m 31s
Good morning.
-
20m 35s
The door was frozen.
-
20m 39s
I just opened it.
-
20m 44s
It's really cold today.
-
20m 48s
- One degree this morning.
- It's minus eight outside. -
20m 56s
Igarashi Tomio is a long-time resident of Taketokoro.
-
21m 04s
On days when it snows, he gets up at 4:00 in the morning.
-
21m 08s
He goes around the village to deal with the snow for two hours twice a day.
-
21m 16s
This continuous management of the snow supports winter life in Taketokoro.
-
21m 26s
Igarashi's family has lived in this area for generations.
-
21m 31s
He says that since Karl arrived, the atmosphere in the village has changed a lot.
-
21m 38s
During the winter, everyone
in the village hated the snow. -
21m 47s
But then Karl came.
He loves the snow. -
21m 52s
He says it's the most beautiful.
-
21m 56s
The people in the village
began to feel the same way. -
22m 01s
We'd never noticed that before.
-
22m 04s
In our village, old farm equipment,
broken-down tractors were abandoned. -
22m 13s
Karl and other new residents said
all that junk looked bad. -
22m 22s
We spent 10 years cleaning it up.
-
22m 25s
It was Karl who made us
realize the village's potential. -
22m 30s
After Karl came, we began to feel that
we should value the village more. -
22m 40s
Shige, Igarashi's wife, says that in her exchanges with newly arrived residents, she's rediscovered what's good about Taketokoro.
-
22m 52s
These are artworks Shige made using pressed flowers.
-
22m 56s
She learned this method from a woman who had come to live in the village.
-
23m 03s
The materials she used were all flowers and leaves she gathered in Taketokoro.
-
23m 11s
I got more interested in wildflowers
and felt they were really beautiful. -
23m 18s
My wife showed me flowers
I hadn't noticed before. -
23m 23s
That surprised me,
but I also found it fun. -
23m 38s
The kids joyfully rolling around in the snow are Onozuka Miya and Yura, who moved here with their parents seven years ago.
-
23m 57s
A fire festival called "Sai no Kami" is held in early January.
-
24m 02s
Villagers raise effigy-like piles of straw made from plants harvested in the fall.
-
24m 13s
It's nearby, isn't it?
-
24m 24s
Miya and Yura are offering the New Year's calligraphy they've made.
-
24m 30s
They light the fire, praying for an abundant harvest and protection from illness and disaster.
-
25m 00s
Great sound.
That's a good sign. -
25m 10s
Fantastic.
-
25m 21s
Starting in mid-April, the village is filled with the sound of rushing water from the melting snow.
-
25m 39s
Japanese butterbur and liverleaf flowers bloom along the banks of the streams, signaling the start of spring.
-
25m 57s
That one there is the cherry tree.
-
26m 04s
It's just peeked out
about this much. -
26m 08s
The snow was actually piled up
about three meters high. -
26m 13s
This cherry tree stands on the outskirts of the village.
-
26m 20s
In the winter, only the top was visible.
-
26m 23s
The rest was buried in snow.
-
26m 35s
Although the branches were broken off by the weight of the snow, shoots are sprouting out from the trunk.
-
26m 43s
It's not dead.
These are sprouting out this far. -
27m 01s
It's May and Sokaku-an is enveloped in greenery.
-
27m 12s
Tina's been waiting for this season when she can work in her garden.
-
27m 21s
This is lovely.
-
27m 22s
This is a lovely flower for summer, for all the summer.
-
27m 31s
The blue salvia is one flower she plants each year without fail.
-
27m 40s
The flowers are so beautiful.
-
27m 43s
So nice color.
-
27m 56s
Whenever I get a little bit tired, I sit here and then I look at my garden.
-
28m 02s
I watch everything, and I didn't get tired of watching this.
-
28m 08s
I watch it every day.
-
28m 10s
I like to work in my garden, but I like to leave it wild.
-
28m 17s
I mean why bad trim?
-
28m 21s
It doesn't take too much, only to leave it and try to fix it and try to take out.
-
28m 30s
It's important and leave the other plants to going nature wild.
-
28m 35s
That's what I like.
-
28m 58s
Oh, this is it.
Leaf, leaf, leaf. -
29m 02s
Tea time features herbs from her garden.
-
29m 05s
The lemon balm.
-
29m 12s
It's delicious.
-
29m 17s
When spring comes, Karl and Tina enjoy spending lots of time in their garden.
-
29m 29s
At the Rouge House, the thyme planted on the south slope is in full bloom.
-
29m 44s
Kanai is going to make a box lunch for a mountain picnic with the other women in the village.
-
30m 07s
She'll wrap sticky steamed rice in magnolia leaves she picked near her house.
-
30m 19s
The deliciousness of the rice is enhanced by the fragrance of the leaf.
-
30m 29s
Like this, and this...
-
30m 34s
It's cute, isn't it?
-
30m 38s
The fragrance is one thing.
-
30m 41s
And then in the past they didn't
have many containers. -
30m 49s
They could just use these leaves
and throw them away. -
30m 54s
Easy to carry, and no need
to clean up later. -
31m 04s
Kanai joins the others.
-
31m 06s
First, they'll go to pick wild mountain plants.
-
31m 12s
Those are good butterburs.
-
31m 16s
We can find them everywhere.
-
31m 20s
Even along my rice field.
Lots and lots. -
31m 25s
Some of these ladies are 90 or older and know where to find the best mountain vegetables.
-
31m 33s
Is this one OK?
-
31m 37s
That one is better.
-
31m 41s
Ones that long are still tender.
They're delicious. -
31m 47s
These are Solomon's seal shoots.
-
31m 51s
They're slightly sweet and taste like asparagus.
-
32m 01s
Oh, it smells lovely.
-
32m 05s
They say that spring plants are abundant after a particularly snowy winter.
-
32m 18s
You gather them up in a bunch.
-
32m 23s
You snap off maybe 10 leaves at a time.
-
32m 27s
It's a great tip.
-
32m 30s
That's how we always do it.
-
32m 35s
"You're doing it her way."
-
32m 38s
Yes, gather them first like this...
-
32m 43s
and then cut off the leaves.
-
32m 49s
I learned something new.
-
32m 57s
After gathering plants, this is what they've been looking forward to - lunch time in the mountains.
-
33m 06s
They've all brought their own specialties.
-
33m 12s
These are simmered wild vegetables
including bamboo shoots. -
33m 17s
The udo in the mountains grew too big.
-
33m 22s
These are good ones from
next to my rice paddies. -
33m 27s
I flavored them with sesame miso.
It's good. -
33m 40s
- It all looks delicious.
- Eat up. -
33m 46s
- It's so good.
- Is it? How's it cooked? -
33m 50s
Just right.
-
33m 55s
After an especially snowy winter, they're finally able to enjoy the springtime.
-
34m 05s
You feel so wonderful.
-
34m 09s
It's exciting.
The snow melts and green appears. -
34m 14s
She says her legs hurt
during the winter and she's not able
to join us in the spring. -
34m 23s
But she's training at home.
-
34m 27s
I exercise in bed before getting up.
-
34m 32s
I'm 91, but I can still do this.
-
34m 35s
Soon, I'll go to the other side.
-
34m 40s
But she's reenergized in the spring,
and she can't just stay home. -
34m 55s
This spring, Karl started renovating another traditional house.
-
35m 04s
The client wants to relocate from Tokyo.
-
35m 11s
The posts and beams come from a house that's over 100 years old in a neighboring town.
-
35m 20s
On this day they're undertaking what's called a trial fitting.
-
35m 25s
In order to get the correct measurements, they temporarily put together the framework of the disassembled old house.
-
35m 34s
For an ordinary house, you draw the plans
and then prepare the materials accordingly. -
35m 41s
But we do the opposite.
-
35m 43s
We measure the old materials accurately,
then draw the plans. -
35m 54s
In a traditional house, the crooked or bent wooden posts and beams are used as they are.
-
36m 07s
In the past, making the posts straight
was a painstaking process. -
36m 14s
That's why crooked posts were used.
-
36m 18s
But the arch is structurally strong.
-
36m 21s
Even with heavy snowfall,
they won't bend. -
36m 27s
Carpenters in the past very skillfully assembled the crooked wooden elements, and built strong buildings that could withstand the weight of the snow.
-
36m 39s
Karl says that he's always impressed by that wisdom and technique.
-
36m 53s
The owner of the house came to see it after the trial fitting.
-
37m 03s
You can see how it will look.
It's amazing. -
37m 14s
Katayama Akiko runs a company in Tokyo.
-
37m 18s
After retiring, she wants to live the next stage of her life in Taketokoro.
-
37m 32s
This is a good post.
-
37m 37s
It's zelkova.
Very precious. -
37m 44s
They say that
a wooden house breathes. -
37m 48s
I think I'll really feel that
when I live here. -
37m 56s
I live alone, but I don't think
I'll get lonely living in this house. -
38m 06s
We get lonely in
concrete high-rises in the city. -
38m 12s
You won't.
-
38m 15s
You hear birds in the morning.
There's the bulldozer in the winter. -
38m 23s
Bulldozers in the winter?
-
38m 27s
Katayama was born and raised in Tokyo.
-
38m 31s
She's now living in an apartment.
-
38m 35s
She feels that she can meet the challenges of living in the country in one of Karl's renovated houses.
-
38m 45s
My parents are gone. No husband.
My daughter is off on her own. -
38m 52s
When I was young,
I faced many limitations. -
38m 58s
Now I can live freely.
-
39m 03s
I made a snap decision.
-
39m 07s
I want to enjoy lots of different things
here in this new environment. -
39m 19s
Her house is scheduled to be completed in about a year.
-
39m 28s
The area where Taketokoro is located is known for the beauty of its rice terraces spreading out over the rough terrain.
-
39m 42s
Filled with abundant snowmelt water, the rice terraces reflect the sky and surrounding scenery.
-
40m 14s
It's a Sunday in June.
-
40m 16s
A picnic day that village residents have been looking forward to.
-
40m 25s
Katayama introduces herself to her future neighbors.
-
40m 34s
My house will be finished
this time next year. -
40m 39s
I'm Katayama Akiko.
-
40m 49s
Every year when the rice planting is finished, all the residents head together into the mountains.
-
40m 55s
They gather wild vegetables for tempura and eat them outside.
-
41m 05s
Even though it's June, there's still some snow in the mountains.
-
41m 12s
How do we go from here?
-
41m 15s
Walk along the right side.
-
41m 19s
That's good.
-
41m 39s
That's for tempura.
-
41m 45s
This can be eaten raw.
You haven't tried it yet, right? -
41m 56s
Meanwhile, the children...
-
41m 59s
It's so cool in here.
-
42m 03s
It's frozen.
A natural refrigerator. -
42m 08s
A refrigerator in the great outdoors.
-
42m 13s
They would rather play in the water than gather vegetables.
-
42m 25s
This is fun.
-
42m 43s
After the wild plants have been gathered, everyone heads to a patch of lawn in the village.
-
42m 49s
At Karl's bidding, all the residents pitch in to help maintain it.
-
42m 57s
They fry up the wild plants they've collected.
-
43m 04s
Altogether, there are 12 varieties.
-
43m 28s
Katayama already seems to feel at home.
-
43m 57s
One afternoon after the rain.
-
44m 00s
The trees are becoming greener and thicker with each rainfall.
-
44m 16s
What's on Tina's menu for today?
-
44m 22s
It's very delicious. As used in Germany.
-
44m 29s
She's making a salmon dish.
-
44m 37s
Sesame oil.
-
44m 41s
I discovered this.
-
44m 43s
It's so delicious.
-
44m 45s
So at least something Japanese. At least a little bit.
-
44m 54s
Tasty.
-
44m 57s
So good.
-
45m 00s
So now the next step.
-
45m 08s
I hope this is OK.
-
45m 11s
I hope, I hope...
-
45m 18s
Beautiful.
-
45m 19s
It's beautiful.
-
45m 22s
Lovely.
-
45m 37s
Colorful and very tasty.
-
46m 12s
The combination is good.
-
46m 14s
With avocado and salmon.
-
46m 20s
It's very fresh and delicious.
-
46m 26s
It tastes great.
-
46m 46s
The two of them often go to a beautiful spot.
-
47m 01s
Look at the color there. It's beautiful.
-
47m 06s
The view from here is so lovely.
-
47m 12s
Such a nice air, fresh and clean air.
-
47m 16s
It's a very calming place.
-
47m 20s
What's sad is that there are fewer and
fewer people farming the rice fields. -
47m 30s
You see more fields being neglected.
-
47m 36s
Once a field becomes disused,
it's very hard to restore. -
47m 46s
Still, the scenery here is very beautiful.
-
47m 53s
It's quiet, only the birds.
-
47m 56s
Since traditional houses were created
in the midst of nature, the best thing is to leave them
as much as possible in nature. -
48m 10s
You're number one.
-
48m 13s
A visionary man.
-
48m 17s
He does the right thing, most beautiful.
-
48m 27s
She doesn't praise me very often.
-
48m 37s
This is Taketokoro, enveloped by lush nature.
-
48m 43s
Day by day, its greenery will grow more and more abundant.
