Japan finally eased its restrictions on entering the country - good news for the inbound tourism industry. UK-born Paul Christie is one of the business owners getting ready to welcome tourists from abroad. He organizes countryside tours in Oita Prefecture, but the natural landscape has seriously deteriorated over the past three years under the pandemic. We look at Paul's efforts to reinvigorate the region's forests and mountains. We also meet Nepali Adhikari Santosh, a car mechanic in Tokyo.

Where We Call Home.
-
0m 18s
Restrictions on entry into Japan due to the pandemic
-
0m 22s
threw the tourism industry into what felt like a long, cold winter.
-
0m 29s
Setting his hopes on the recovery of inbound tourism is this president of a local tour company.
-
0m 37s
Paul Christie, from the UK.
-
0m 41s
If this goes on, we'll be
out of business by spring 2023. -
0m 48s
Neglect over the past three years has accelerated the deterioration of the forests and fields he toured with his customers.
-
1m 02s
In preparation for the tourists' return,
-
1m 04s
he acquired a local mountain and set out to restore it - work that could take a hundred years!
-
1m 12s
Paul places all his bets on restarting his tour business.
-
1m 16s
We followed his efforts through this trying period.
-
1m 24s
In Oita Prefecture, the Ota district of Kitsuki City is a small farming village of around 1,100 inhabitants.
-
1m 39s
Working hard harvesting rice with a local farmer is Paul Christie.
-
1m 47s
He runs a tour company that caters to visitors from overseas,
-
1m 51s
and has been putting efforts into rejuvenating the area.
-
2m 00s
He sees the region's picturesque farming communities - often referred to as "satoyama" in Japan - as its biggest assets.
-
2m 12s
Paul has had much success conducting tours with travelers from abroad.
-
2m 16s
The simple walks around local forests and farms are a hit among tourists of a wealthier demographic.
-
2m 23s
During peak years, Paul welcomed around 4,000 visitors annually.
-
2m 39s
He used part of his business's revenue to support the rapidly aging community,
-
2m 44s
helping with things like financing the purchase of farming equipment.
-
2m 52s
But when the COVID pandemic broke out in 2020, all tours were cancelled.
-
2m 57s
Paul's company was suddenly forced to put its business on hold.
-
3m 03s
What are we to do?
-
3m 06s
All we can do is hold out.
-
3m 10s
He put most of his twenty-eight employees on a temporary break,
-
3m 14s
and made use of government subsidy to try to keep the company alive.
-
3m 20s
When the pandemic broke out,
we thought it'd last six months... -
3m 26s
or maybe a year.
-
3m 28s
We never expected it would
last over two years. -
3m 34s
If this goes on, we'll be
out of business by spring 2023. -
3m 45s
Over the three-or-so years of the pandemic, the state of the villages, fields and forests
-
3m 50s
that are the main attractions of his tours has considerably deteriorated.
-
4m 00s
Once animated with tourists from overseas, the community is gradually losing its liveliness.
-
4m 11s
Feeling powerless, Paul often went into the woods alone
-
4m 14s
to do whatever maintenance work he could along the tours' paths.
-
4m 32s
Over the twenty years since Paul settled down here, he's always counted on the help of a dear friend.
-
4m 45s
- Hi there!
- Come in! -
4m 49s
- Cold, isn't it?
- Sure is! -
4m 56s
Seventy-nine-year-old Wakisaka Etsu - "Ecchan" to her friends and family.
-
5m 06s
Two decades ago, when Paul arrived in the community alone, she warmly welcomed him like he was family.
-
5m 17s
Since Paul started his business, Ecchan has been inviting the tour participants to her home
-
5m 23s
where they can experience authentic Japanese countryside hospitality.
-
5m 29s
We're close friends.
-
5m 33s
Yeah, not so much mother and son,
but more like close friends. -
5m 38s
We tell each other everything.
-
5m 44s
Ecchan's words of wisdom are a constant source of moral support.
-
5m 50s
My Mum often said, ‘Be patient.'
-
5m 56s
‘After the dark night,
morning always comes.' -
6m 00s
Yes, but I'm an impatient Englishman.
I'm not good at biding my time. -
6m 07s
It's my problem.
-
6m 11s
I want to hurry ahead.
-
6m 13s
Yeah, well, I can't wait too long either.
I haven't got much time left. -
6m 25s
Ecchan's encouragements always ring true, especially now.
-
6m 36s
Paul's company is struggling to survive.
-
6m 40s
Working tirelessly to help keep it afloat is his wife, Mihoko, or "Mimi."
-
6m 46s
She's the one who solely took charge of procedures for things like
-
6m 49s
obtaining government support, navigating the firm through the troubled waters.
-
6m 56s
Bye bye!
Off you go! -
7m 00s
Combining work with childrearing and house chores - she's been maintaining quite a balancing act.
-
7m 11s
It's Ecchan.
-
7m 14s
- Morning! Sorry for calling suddenly.
- Not at all. -
7m 22s
Worried for Chris and Mimi, Ecchan has been calling them more often.
-
7m 30s
Yes, we will. Thanks.
Don't catch cold either. -
7m 37s
Ecchan's like a mother to everyone,
no matter their age. -
7m 45s
She listens to us talk about our work,
she'd like to welcome tourists too... -
7m 53s
but we can't right now.
-
7m 56s
She worries she'll start to grow senile
if tours don't restart soon. -
8m 04s
But she never lets her worries show.
She's all warmth and smiles. -
8m 10s
She's got many things on her mind.
I know it. -
8m 15s
But she smiles, and says, ‘It'll be OK.'
-
8m 19s
She encourages and supports me,
our family, the company... -
8m 25s
and everyone around her.
-
8m 34s
Weeks later, Paul received the first good news in a long while.
-
8m 39s
It came from Mr. Hashimoto, who's been working with him to enliven the region.
-
8m 44s
- Hi, long time no see.
- Good to see you again. -
8m 49s
Born here, Hashimoto had been living in Tokyo when he was inspired by Paul's work,
-
8m 54s
and decided to move back to his hometown.
-
8m 57s
They now collaborate to refurbish vacant houses.
-
9m 02s
He has news of a major development.
-
9m 06s
The care facility building we were
checking out the past couple years. -
9m 11s
Things are moving forward.
-
9m 15s
More and more firms
are interested in joining. -
9m 19s
- I'd like to show you around the site.
- Absolutely. -
9m 28s
Hashimoto has set his sights on an unused elderly care facility building.
-
9m 33s
He obtained permission from the local government to use the location at minimal cost.
-
9m 42s
He rallied four Tokyo-based firms to join the initiative
-
9m 45s
to create a center that'll foster projects to use the region's resources and promote local businesses.
-
9m 54s
We'll come together to share ideas
and find uses we'd never imagined before. -
10m 02s
I now realize how much work
he's been doing. -
10m 07s
I'm so happy.
It will invigorate the region even more. -
10m 12s
It certainly invigorates me even more!
-
10m 23s
Then, last October, the government began to ease its restrictions on entry into Japan.
-
10m 31s
Tourists from around the world reappeared throughout the nation.
-
10m 40s
Tour bookings are on the rise at Paul's company, too.
-
10m 49s
For 2023, we have about
450 more reservations. -
10m 55s
- For the year?
- Yes. -
10m 58s
- I can only smile.
- It's great. -
11m 08s
At last, Paul's tours are about to restart,
-
11m 11s
but there's something he's been wanting to do beforehand.
-
11m 18s
This is a mountain he acquired to help ensure the region's posterity.
-
11m 26s
The area's been deteriorating over the past few years.
-
11m 30s
Paul is planning work to restore the forest to its former glory over years and generations to come.
-
11m 41s
I want it to become lusher than ever.
-
11m 44s
It'll take years, most likely decades...
-
11m 49s
or even centuries,
but we'll do it little by little. -
11m 54s
We've cut the grass along this path.
-
11m 58s
We'll be taking the first tour members
on a hike along it. -
12m 08s
The day before the tours restart.
-
12m 13s
Paul and his employees have come to clean up the company's office where the hike will begin.
-
12m 22s
This place brings back memories.
-
12m 27s
Let's clean it up and
get it running again. -
12m 39s
Many cobwebs.
-
12m 43s
Paul's family, friends and staff thoroughly tidy the place up to get it ready for the big day.
-
12m 56s
This was my very first office
here in Japan. -
13m 01s
It has a historical significance
for our company. -
13m 06s
I want to treasure it with everyone here.
-
13m 14s
The day has finally come, with bright autumn sunshine.
-
13m 25s
Good morning.
-
13m 27s
- At last.
- Yes, I'm excited. It's a fine day. -
13m 33s
Off I go!
-
13m 40s
The participants have gathered up at the freshly-reopened company headquarters.
-
13m 46s
The five tourists from countries including the US, Canada and Switzerland
-
13m 50s
are about to set forth with Paul as their guide.
-
13m 57s
For the first time in three years, the hike through the countryside begins.
-
14m 04s
This time, he starts by showing them the current deteriorated state of the forest
-
14m 09s
caused by the decrease in human activity that stems from the declining population.
-
14m 15s
"I mean, in sixty years, this is the sort of tree it should become.
-
14m 20s
This one.
-
14m 22s
It's probably sixty years...fifty, sixty years."
-
14m 28s
"And here, all of these have been blown down."
-
14m 33s
"And you see a number of years ago."
-
14m 37s
"So, this is what I'm saying, if you can leave it three hundred years,
-
14m 39s
all these plantations will disappear and it'll be a completely different forest."
-
14m 42s
"Do people ever go out and, like, seed scatter?
-
14m 45s
‘Cause they're saying that's one of the best regeneration tools."
-
14m 47s
"Uh, we'll try it!"
-
14m 51s
Next comes the main part of the tour...
-
14m 56s
They reach Paul's mountain.
-
15m 02s
"And we're slowly exploring more and more.
-
15m 04s
It's a big property, so, we're...
-
15m 06s
To do it all at once, it's quite difficult.
-
15m 08s
But we're seeing what trees were already there besides the plantation trees."
-
15m 13s
The gradual regeneration of the forest.
-
15m 16s
Paul hopes the tour members will come again to see his work's progress.
-
15m 22s
"...and we have this view! So, we're gonna try and lighten the view up."
-
15m 33s
"...the trees and the landscape is very different? They have a great future."
-
15m 42s
Now, time for a visit to Ecchan's home.
-
15m 48s
- Hello everyone! Welcome!
- Hi Ecchan! -
15m 53s
"This.. this is Ecchan, who..When I moved here twenty years ago,
-
15m 56s
we soon became firm friends and her husband and Grandma were still around then..."
-
16m 01s
Come on in!
-
16m 04s
She too had been impatiently counting the days.
-
16m 09s
I'd been waiting to welcome you.
I'm so glad the tours restarted! -
16m 17s
She treats them to some mandarin oranges from her orchard.
-
16m 29s
"They're so fresh...and not super sweet."
-
16m 37s
"Very nice to peel."
-
16m 43s
Once again, Ecchan's home is filled with the laughter of happy tourists.
-
16m 52s
Thank you so much.
Take care, and come visit again. -
16m 57s
Feels like we've met before.
-
17m 00s
Let's meet again.
-
17m 05s
"She's such a warm lady, so..."
-
17m 12s
So long.
Bye bye! -
17m 16s
Paul's back.
-
17m 18s
His cheeriness has returned.
-
17m 22s
It's been a while.
Thank you! -
17m 29s
Some customers want to join the project.
-
17m 34s
Everyone can do their part
to help revitalize the region. -
17m 41s
But rather than individually, we'll get
real results by working together. -
17m 47s
This project to regenerate the forests,
and help them regain their richness... -
17m 54s
will take place over many years.
-
17m 58s
I have to fulfill my part and pass
the torch to future generations. -
18m 05s
We have to focus on creating foundations
on which the next generation will build... -
18m 12s
to keep the project alive and moving.
-
18m 17s
That way, I can die with peace of mind.
-
18m 28s
Two months since the tours restarted.
-
18m 32s
Today, Paul and his family are on his mountain to plant some sawtooth oak saplings.
-
18m 39s
In about twenty years, their wood will be used as charcoal or to grow mushrooms.
-
18m 48s
Children grow to eventually support their family, and grandchildren are born
-
18m 53s
- such is the cycle of life in the rural village community.
-
18m 58s
They plant the trees with hope to create a sustainable and abundant forest that will last for generations.
-
19m 07s
When Ecchan first approached me,
I'd never imagined that 20 years later... -
19m 14s
our project would have grown
to such a scale. -
19m 20s
I've had such a fulfilling life
over the past 20 years. -
19m 25s
And because it's been so fulfilling...
-
19m 30s
I must give back to the people
and community that've helped me. -
19m 43s
Let's work for the region's future!
-
19m 48s
This is where we call home!!
-
20m 16s
Hi! I'm Adhikari Santosh.
-
20m 17s
I'm a car mechanic in Tokyo.
Leave all your car problems to me! -
20m 34s
Edogawa, Tokyo.
-
20m 39s
This car maintenance center
near central Tokyo employs 25 workers. -
20m 49s
9:30 a.m.
work starts. -
20m 53s
This red liquid is engine coolant
that keeps the engine from overheating. -
21m 01s
It's leaking.
-
21m 02s
It's because the radiator is worn out.
-
21m 07s
Let's raise the car.
-
21m 09s
Santosh is in charge of vehicle repairs.
-
21m 14s
He's preparing to replace
this car's radiator. -
21m 28s
I first have to remove some parts in front.
-
21m 32s
As I work, I look carefully
and think of the best way to proceed. -
21m 46s
There was some leaked coolant in here.
-
21m 50s
So, I'm draining it.
-
22m 11s
Let's start the engine.
-
22m 15s
It works.
-
22m 18s
He does a final clean up,
and the car is ready to go. -
22m 24s
Shall I do the double check?
-
22m 29s
Filter, OK!
-
22m 32s
- Can you check?
- Nice and tight. OK! -
22m 39s
In charge of the maintenance department,
Santosh oversees the staff's work. -
22m 46s
Several cars come in every day.
We mustn't make the customers wait. -
22m 52s
I assign work according to skills.
-
22m 55s
It's a lot of responsibility.
-
22m 57s
You can't slack off today...
-
23m 01s
with the camera rolling!
-
23m 08s
A car lover since childhood, Santosh
attended a technical college in Japan. -
23m 15s
There are many Japanese cars in Nepal.
They're durable. -
23m 20s
So, I came to Japan
to learn technical skills. -
23m 26s
In 2018, Santosh found this job.
He'd gotten married a few months earlier. -
23m 33s
The physical work was tough at first.
-
23m 37s
Whenever I felt stressed, I'd talk
about it with my wife after I came home. -
23m 44s
But I love the hands-on work,
so I'm enjoying myself. -
23m 56s
This is our manager.
-
24m 01s
He's so kind and teaches me a lot.
-
24m 05s
I've much respect for him.
-
24m 07s
I moved here from a different branch
24m 12s
I was impressed by Santosh's passion
and dedication to his work. -
24m 19s
He has to teach younger staff...
-
24m 22s
so I taught him how to teach.
-
24m 24s
I feel he's grown so much.
-
24m 30s
As I watched everyone make progress,
I gained confidence. -
24m 36s
At times, we disagree on something.
-
24m 40s
But we always talk about it
and eventually reach an agreement. -
24m 46s
He has a strong sense of responsibility.
-
24m 50s
He's got much more potential.
-
24m 54s
This car had a defective side mirror.
-
24m 57s
I'll return it to the customer.
-
24m 59s
Santosh does a final check
with the customer. -
25m 06s
Please try it.
-
25m 13s
It works! Thanks.
-
25m 15s
Drive safely!
Thank you! -
25m 23s
We get all kinds of cars every day.
Sometimes we can't find the problem. -
25m 29s
So, I'm very happy
when I can solve an issue. -
25m 35s
And the customer's happy
when they get their car back. -
25m 41s
It's the best part of my work.
-
25m 49s
My treasure is my certificate
of completion. -
25m 54s
He passed the national mechanic test, and
can do government-run car inspections. -
26m 00s
There's content on legal issues.
-
26m 03s
I added notes on Japanese vocabulary
that's more difficult. -
26m 09s
Like special terms for
‘light vehicle' and ‘bicycle.' -
26m 15s
I'd study until late at night for the test.
-
26m 19s
In the future, I want to do
car-related work in Nepal. -
26m 25s
I believe that if you work hard,
people will notice it. -
26m 30s
Your efforts will be recognized.
