On this episode, we revisit Ghana-native Tony Justice, who runs a canteen for children from families in financial difficulties and single-parent households in Kanagawa Prefecture. Looking to keep his project going amidst the pandemic, he decided to hit the road! With a food truck, he turned his diner into a mobile canteen. We tag along as Tony prepares to deploy his diner on wheels in Tokyo! Later on, we also meet Filipino Bueno Ryan, who raises cows on a cattle farm in Chiba Prefecture.

One man is hoping to use his to provide free meals to children and single parents in need of help.
-
0m 23s
Tony Justice from Ghana.
-
0m 31s
He used to run canteens for children.
-
0m 35s
Let's eat!
-
0m 38s
They were a hit with the kids.
-
0m 42s
But the pandemic forced him to close them down.
-
0m 47s
He got the idea of an open-air canteen using a food truck.
-
0m 54s
Will his new project succeed?
-
0m 58s
We're a kids' canteen!
-
1m 00s
I've never done this before.
I'm worried. -
1m 06s
Driven by his wish to offer delicious meals to children and parents going through tough times...
-
1m 13s
It's good!
-
1m 15s
...Tony attempts to create new opportunities to welcome them.
-
1m 24s
About a fity-minute train ride from central Tokyo is Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture.
-
1m 34s
Near the main railway station, we find Tony's base of operations.
-
1m 41s
January 2022.
-
1m 43s
Tony and his staff are hard at work in the kitchen.
-
1m 50s
Is the rice ready?
-
1m 55s
Not yet?
-
2m 02s
They're preparing 200 take-out meals.
-
2m 09s
They're for children and their single mothers who've been going through difficulties due to the pandemic.
-
2m 16s
Thank you!
-
2m 22s
That day, more than 300 people were waiting in line.
-
2m 33s
Tony felt something more could be done.
-
2m 40s
More and more people are coming
since the pandemic started. -
2m 46s
That includes elderly people
and whole families. -
2m 52s
We only give them takeout meals.
No socializing. -
2m 58s
It's rather sad.
-
3m 02s
Tony was born in a family of nine children in the West African country of Ghana.
-
3m 11s
He moved to Japan in 1990, and after a career in marketing for an English language school,
-
3m 17s
he opened up a restaurant that served authentic African cuisine.
-
3m 23s
Seven years ago, Tony learned on the news that one out of seven children in Japan lived in poverty.
-
3m 31s
To help those in his area, he started a children's canteen project.
-
3m 38s
Twice a month, he opened his canteen in Sagamihara and Yokohama.
-
3m 48s
In Japan, children's canteens offer free or low-priced meals to families in financial difficulty
-
3m 54s
and kids who have to eat alone because both parents work.
-
4m 00s
Yummy!
-
4m 02s
Tony named his canteen Novinye - a word that means "family" in his native tongue.
-
4m 09s
In his homeland of Ghana, members of a community support each other through difficulties just like a family would.
-
4m 16s
It's a culture he still cherishes in his country of adoption.
-
4m 23s
It's in my African roots.
-
4m 25s
People share food with those around them,
no matter their religion or tribe. -
4m 32s
I grew up surrounded with
this philosophy of mutual help. -
4m 43s
Tony wants to reopen his Novinye canteen to fill hungry stomachs and invigorate spirits.
-
4m 52s
He had the idea of using a food truck.
-
4m 59s
Deployed at outdoor locations, it would make it easier to implement measures against COVID infection.
-
5m 07s
Tony made use of crowdfunding to purchase this second-hand food truck.
-
5m 17s
With some help, he refurbished it over 18 months to give it the look and functionality he wanted.
-
5m 28s
Novinye has become mobile.
-
5m 33s
The food truck now ready, Tony's excitement and hopes are up high.
-
5m 44s
Great!
-
5m 53s
Sagamihara's neighboring city of Machida in Tokyo.
-
6m 00s
Early this summer, Tony was looking for a location to open his outdoor children's canteen.
-
6m 11s
He found the perfect spot: a park near the center of town.
-
6m 21s
The truck is here.
-
6m 24s
We'll pitch tents behind.
-
6m 28s
We'll put tables...
-
6m 31s
so kids and their parents can eat here.
-
6m 40s
But as Tony's anticipation grows, so does his concern.
-
6m 47s
I've never done this before.
I'm worried. -
6m 52s
It's not that simple, but there's
nothing else to do but try. -
7m 00s
Holding an open-air canteen is something new for him.
-
7m 05s
Will he have enough food and funds?
-
7m 07s
Will the children come?
-
7m 09s
In spite of his uncertainty, Tony remains positive.
-
7m 15s
It's a new environment.
-
7m 18s
But we'll do our best and prepare
more than eight dishes... -
7m 27s
including some we've never served before.
We'll make it work. -
7m 36s
A new supporter has approached Tony.
-
7m 45s
Kikuchi Ayumi is the chair of a local consumers' co-operative.
-
7m 52s
Hearing about Tony's project to run a mobile children's canteen, she offered him some help.
-
8m 00s
With the truck, you can go anywhere.
-
8m 06s
It makes it so versatile.
It opens up many possibilities. -
8m 13s
What kind of support would you need?
-
8m 17s
Food supplies like meat, fish,
vegetables, and milk... -
8m 25s
Support like that
would help us keep going. -
8m 32s
How about staff?
-
8m 35s
Yes, we need staff, supplies
and funds as well. -
8m 43s
Kikuchi is going to look for ways to procure some food supplies and find staff to help out.
-
9m 00s
Tony is also planning another project.
-
9m 07s
The Novinye Mom and Dad Cafe - a place for people to talk about the joys and worries of parenting.
-
9m 16s
I've wanted to do that for three years
but couldn't because of the pandemic. -
9m 24s
Tony has long felt concern for parents who stay isolated.
-
9m 31s
A single mother, Etsuko was a regular at the canteen.
-
9m 35s
Unable to express her worries, she always kept to herself.
-
9m 41s
By providing parents with opportunities to share their concerns, Tony hopes to alleviate their emotional burden.
-
9m 49s
If it can help lighten the load
on their minds, even if only a little... -
9m 58s
single mothers like her
will smile more. -
10m 02s
It'll make the kids happier as well,
and make childrearing easier. -
10m 12s
In June, when the spread of COVID slowed down, the Mom and Dad cafe event was held.
-
10m 20s
Still, as a measure against infection, the duration is limited to an hour.
-
10m 25s
With Tony's promotion, a total of 12 parents came, the majority of which are former users of the canteen.
-
10m 34s
If there's anything regarding childrearing
you'd like to talk about, don't hesitate. -
10m 44s
I really feel like I need
more time for myself. -
10m 53s
My husband is so busy with his work...
-
10m 58s
I wonder how I can manage
to take care of the kids by myself. -
11m 06s
Etsuko mustered up the courage to participate.
-
11m 09s
It's my first time. I don't know anyone.
But I hope I can get to know people. -
11m 17s
I have four children.
I take care of them alone. -
11m 23s
This single mother's story is something Etsuko can relate to.
-
11m 28s
How old are they?
-
11m 31s
High school first year, junior high
second and first year, and fourth grade. -
11m 42s
Thanks to Tony's initiative, the mothers were able to connect with others like them
-
11m 47s
who're experiencing similar joys and hardships.
-
11m 51s
Thank you!
-
11m 57s
Next time, I hope we can talk more.
-
12m 03s
Perhaps this has given them a bit of strength to keep going through their difficulties.
-
12m 12s
One week left until the outdoor event.
-
12m 17s
Fliers in hand, Tony heads to a shopping area near the site.
-
12m 25s
He visits the head of the business owners' association.
-
12m 29s
- We hope to offer help to those in need.
- Alright. -
12m 35s
I'll put them up.
-
12m 39s
He agreed to hang some posters promoting the event.
-
12m 47s
We'll do it from a food truck
starting at 11:45. -
12m 54s
This woman is a teacher for a correspondence high school.
-
12m 59s
- We're on social media.
- Great. -
13m 04s
She'll advertise the canteen through her school's social media account.
-
13m 14s
The day before the event.
-
13m 18s
Ms. Kikuchi of the co-operative arrives with a generous delivery.
-
13m 29s
Calling out for help at her organization's board meetings,
-
13m 32s
she gathered donations in the form of five different kinds of fruit and vegetables, including plenty of tomatoes.
-
13m 42s
This man who's been supporting Tony's canteen right from the beginning brings some organically-grown vegetables.
-
13m 52s
Also, donations of vegetables from all over Japan have arrived.
-
14m 01s
The circle of support for Tony's project is growing.
-
14m 09s
He got an idea to use the fresh tomatoes he received.
-
14m 16s
A kind of soup he's loved since childhood.
-
14m 21s
This is real African-style light soup.
-
14m 29s
A mouth-watering aroma of garlic and spices.
-
14m 34s
I couldn't do this alone.
-
14m 36s
I get a lot of help from many people
and organizations. -
14m 50s
This professional cook joined as a volunteer for the first time.
-
14m 55s
They decided to try a kids' favorite - Italian style rice casserole with white sauce.
-
15m 08s
It's good!
-
15m 11s
Maybe we can season the rice more?
-
15m 17s
They continue to experiment well into the night.
-
15m 29s
The day has come!
-
15m 34s
The food truck is loaded.
-
15m 39s
Tony's been cooking since five thirty in the morning.
-
15m 46s
Today's the day. We did all we could.
Let's wait and see how it goes. -
15m 55s
As long as the kids are happy.
-
16m 01s
And the Novinye Mobile Children's Canteen takes to the road!
-
16m 14s
The cooks get to work.
-
16m 21s
This is a daily staple food in Africa.
It's called fufu. -
16m 27s
It goes well with the light soup.
Very tasty. -
16m 33s
A special soup that's the product of much collaboration.
-
16m 39s
The menu also includes a total of ten other dishes children love, like fried chicken and spaghetti.
-
16m 46s
There's also a variety of twenty food items for the families to take home.
-
16m 53s
The children's canteen is now open!
-
17m 04s
How many meals?
Two? OK. -
17m 09s
Thank you.
-
17m 13s
Tony was worried if many people in need of support would come.
-
17m 17s
But actually, a number of children and their parents much larger than he had imagined showed up.
-
17m 33s
I'm so happy. I never thought so many
people would come. It's exciting. -
17m 41s
It's so motivating!
-
17m 46s
In fact, Tony has a hard time keeping up with the high number of guests.
-
17m 54s
Cooking a second round.
-
17m 58s
More than 200 meals.
-
18m 02s
The rice casserole makes its appearance.
-
18m 07s
To the rice, they've added turmeric for color and garlic for flavor.
-
18m 16s
Is it good?
-
18m 18s
The rice is tasty.
-
18m 25s
It's such a variety. I expected something
smaller, but it's a very generous meal. -
18m 35s
It's really a big help.
All this food. -
18m 40s
This single mother raising an elementary schooler struggles to make ends meet.
-
18m 45s
She saw one of Tony's fliers.
-
18m 50s
There aren't many such events in Machida.
-
18m 55s
If this canteen is held once more,
I'd really like to come again. -
19m 06s
It's delicious!
-
19m 09s
I didn't know if people would turn up.
-
19m 12s
But it turns out there are many more
people who need help than I'd imagined. -
19m 20s
They're hidden all over Japan.
-
19m 24s
I've realized this today.
-
19m 29s
This food truck has a lot of work to do.
We can go anywhere in Japan. -
19m 35s
Wherever there're people who need help,
if I'm available, then I'll do my best... -
19m 42s
to give them a hand.
-
19m 49s
Tony has opened up new roads to pursue his mission of helping those in need.
-
20m 19s
Hi! I'm Ryan Bueno from the Philippines.
-
20m 23s
I raise cattle on a farm in Japan
to produce delicious beef. -
20m 42s
Here in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture...
-
20m 45s
the ocean wind makes for cool summers,
an ideal condition for cattle. -
20m 52s
6:30 a.m.
work starts. -
20m 59s
First, I clean up the feed troughs.
-
21m 03s
People don't eat with dirty dishes.
It's the same for cows. -
21m 11s
He makes sure the cows
can enjoy their meal in comfort. -
21m 28s
He uses an automated system
to pour all the feed at once. -
21m 35s
I spread the feed.
-
21m 38s
For example, you can see
there's no feed here. -
21m 42s
Spreading it like this ensures
every cow eats the same amount. -
21m 48s
It's easier for them.
-
21m 59s
Cows that are weaker
and can't come to the trough... -
22m 04s
get a special diet
that's higher in nutrients. -
22m 09s
Come on.
Here you are. -
22m 17s
Cows recognize who feeds them
just by smell. -
22m 21s
They're like, ‘Oh! Ryan's here!'
-
22m 27s
The farm's 600 cows are divided
among three barns. -
22m 31s
They're raised here from the age
of four months to two years old. -
22m 38s
calf shed.
-
22m 44s
They're about four months old.
-
22m 49s
28 months after birth,
the cows are sent out. -
22m 56s
I take care of them every day.
It makes me sad when I send them off. -
23m 06s
Ryan came to study in Japan in 2015,
and got a work certification in 2020. -
23m 13s
He later got married in Japan,
and had a daughter. -
23m 20s
12:30 p.m.
lunch break. -
23m 24s
on the phone
with his daughter. -
23m 30s
Eat well!
-
23m 37s
Seeing her gives me energy.
-
23m 43s
Today, some cows will be sent out.
-
23m 48s
Ryan and his senior pick
the ones that are ready. -
23m 56s
- See the larger thighs?
- Yes. -
24m 00s
The back is well developed.
It's ready. -
24m 11s
This is my senior...
-
24m 13s
Takagi Kengo.
-
24m 14s
He's very kind.
-
24m 18s
He's our first foreign worker.
-
24m 20s
He's fluent in Japanese,
and very earnest. -
24m 25s
He takes great care of the cows.
It's so fun to teach him. -
24m 30s
He came 90 minutes early
on his first day. -
24m 35s
I did.
-
24m 37s
He's so earnest.
I know he'll make a good manager. -
24m 43s
We'll hire more foreign workers.
I want him to be their manager. -
24m 48s
He speaks Japanese and understands cows.
He'll be a great leader. -
24m 54s
This is very motivating.
-
25m 04s
I'll show you my treasure.
-
25m 15s
This jacket is the first one
I received when I was hired here. -
25m 22s
It's all worn out now.
-
25m 26s
But it holds a lot of memories.
I can't throw it away. -
25m 34s
sending off the cows.
-
25m 42s
Among the cows sent off today
are some that came to the farm... -
25m 49s
at the same time as Ryan
started to work here. -
26m 16s
Yes, it makes me sad to see them go.
-
26m 24s
But new cows are going to come in.
-
26m 28s
I'll continue to work hard
so that they too can make delicious beef.
