Sakazuki River flows into the Sea of Japan in the west of Hokkaido Prefecture. This river, which collects snowmelt from the Shakotan Peninsula, is known among canoeists as a river where they can enjoy some wild river rapids. In this episode, French and Japanese canoeists fully enjoy adventurous kayaking. Slope-like fast-flowing stream and a series of waterfalls await them as they navigate the rapids. The 2 challenge these difficult courses by using their skills. Later, we also show you footage of freshwater fish that sustain life in this river, flowing into the Sea of Japan.

These kayakers are attempting to navigate some wild river rapids.
-
0m 14s
In the springtime of Hokkaido,
-
0m 16s
rivers collect large amounts of melted snow.
-
0m 21s
A waterfall with a five-meter drop also awaits them.
-
0m 28s
In this episode, we experience the thrills and spills of kayaking.
-
0m 36s
Wild Hokkaido!
-
0m 42s
The Shakotan Peninsula is located on Hokkaido's western coastline.
-
0m 48s
It's covered in deep snow during winter.
-
0m 54s
The roughly ten-kilometer-long Sakazuki River
-
0m 58s
flows into the Sea of Japan from the peninsula.
-
1m 05s
In May, the river roars with a tremendous amount of snowmelt.
-
1m 14s
For kayakers, it's their most favorite time of the year.
-
1m 19s
There are many challenging sections along the river
-
1m 23s
that appeal to adventurous types.
-
1m 32s
Frenchman Hugo and his Japanese friend Ota Chihiro
-
1m 36s
will take on the challenge.
-
1m 40s
Chihiro is a kayak guide, and knows the Sakazuki River thoroughly.
-
1m 45s
Hugo is also a kayaking specialist
-
1m 48s
who has kayaked many rivers overseas.
-
1m 50s
Both are big fans of the Sakazuki River.
-
1m 55s
I feel really excited
-
1m 57s
because I'm on the top of this really beautiful, clean river.
-
2m 00s
Lots of waterfalls on the way, so yeah.
-
2m 02s
Really, really excited.
-
2m 06s
Let's go!
-
2m 08s
They're ready to start their journey on the white water rapids.
-
2m 16s
Let's do some warming up.
-
2m 26s
Not long after setting off, they warm up
-
2m 29s
to prepare for the strong current they'll encounter on the river.
-
2m 44s
After warming up, they're now ready to raft down the river.
-
3m 05s
The first major obstacle to appear is an enormous rock,
-
3m 10s
long and smooth like a slide.
-
3m 12s
It's close to 30 meters in length.
-
3m 16s
It's an exhilarating place to ride the current,
-
3m 19s
but there's a risk of capsizing if they get too close to the center
-
3m 24s
where the water surges.
-
3m 26s
If you go to the left side of the rooster tail,
-
3m 31s
you're going to hit the big hole at the bottom.
-
3m 36s
Chihiro goes first.
-
3m 39s
He races down the slippery rock.
-
3m 48s
Next is Hugo.
-
3m 58s
He makes it to the bottom in one piece without being caught in a wave.
-
4m 05s
Both men are confident kayakers.
-
4m 08s
They continue down the fast-flowing stream.
-
4m 20s
The two of them pull up to the riverbank and alight.
-
4m 36s
A waterfall with a drop of four meters is looming before them.
-
4m 48s
Chihiro checks for a safe route.
-
4m 53s
You can choose out of two lines.
-
4m 57s
One is in the middle, and the other one is on the left side.
-
5m 01s
At the waterfall's basin, the water crashes with such force
-
5m 07s
that it surges in reverse as if it is boiling up.
-
5m 11s
It's known as a boil, and there's a risk of capsizing
-
5m 15s
when going over the falls.
-
5m 19s
Chihiro gives some advice on how to overcome it.
-
5m 27s
He suggests paddling hard enough
-
5m 29s
to propel the kayak forward horizontally in the air,
-
5m 33s
to avoid sinking into the boil.
-
5m 37s
Timing and position...
-
5m 41s
If you make a mistake, you may fall vertical, but no problem.
-
5m 46s
It is not dangerous.
-
5m 50s
Chihiro shows Hugo how it's done.
-
6m 01s
He paddles powerfully,
-
6m 03s
stays horizontal and manages to land upright in the water.
-
6m 13s
Next, Hugo's turn.
-
6m 28s
He makes it over.
-
6m 41s
Hugo looks relieved to have cleared the first major obstacle.
-
6m 52s
The two continue their journey down the river.
-
7m 12s
Chihiro stops his kayak on the bank again.
-
7m 24s
The next challenge to appear is a two-tiered waterfall.
-
7m 31s
If you're unable to maintain your position between the levels,
-
7m 34s
it's difficult to get back up again.
-
7m 38s
If you go left, you hit the wall and get stuck.
-
7m 44s
Once you get stuck, you have to swim.
-
7m 48s
So, try to go right.
-
7m 50s
Especially at the end,
-
7m 52s
if you don't land directly in the center of the river,
-
7m 55s
there's a chance you'll capsize.
-
8m 00s
Hugo maps out the course in his head.
-
8m 08s
He kayaks down first.
-
8m 24s
He did it without flipping.
-
8m 43s
Chihiro goes next.
-
8m 58s
He also gets over the waterfall successfully.
-
9m 09s
After conquering a difficult section of the river, they take a rest.
-
9m 16s
Hugo uses his aquascope to peer into the river.
-
9m 25s
This could be a good place for the cherry salmon to hide.
-
9m 30s
It's sort of slow-moving water, not really fast
-
9m 33s
but really close to fast-moving water that brings a lot of food.
-
9m 37s
You can see all the rocks and everything,
-
9m 39s
the small sand that's moving around,
-
9m 41s
so there could be some insects in there.
-
9m 43s
Hugo is actually a fishing guide,
-
9m 46s
and is fascinated by freshwater fish.
-
9m 52s
Masu Salmon are an unusual fish.
-
9m 55s
They grow for one to two years,
-
9m 57s
after which almost all females go out to sea,
-
10m 01s
leaving some males behind in the river.
-
10m 07s
After a year of fully maturing at sea,
-
10m 10s
the females return to the river to spawn.
-
10m 17s
As such, this river is very important to the fish
-
10m 21s
that travel between river and sea.
-
10m 29s
The pair continue kayaking downstream.
-
10m 46s
Waiting up ahead of them...
-
10m 56s
is the most challenging section of the entire course.
-
11m 01s
A five-meter-high waterfall.
-
11m 05s
This boil is pretty strong, and this will push you to the left.
-
11m 15s
Chihiro suggests that it's best to kayak
-
11m 17s
to the right of the waterfall to avoid the boil.
-
11m 25s
Even Chihiro has trouble staying upright in his kayak
-
11m 29s
when going down this waterfall.
-
11m 32s
Will he clear it this time?
-
11m 35s
Chihiro starts paddling...
-
11m 52s
And he's made it!
-
11m 56s
Next is Hugo.
-
12m 03s
His heart pounds.
-
12m 24s
The kayak starts to tip.
-
12m 32s
Hugo attempts to right himself.
-
12m 36s
Chihiro promptly lends a hand.
-
12m 46s
Hugo looks a little frustrated that he capsized.
-
12m 54s
The Sakazuki River isn't all smooth sailing,
-
12m 58s
but that's exactly why it appeals to kayakers.
-
13m 06s
The adventure is coming to an end.
-
13m 09s
Almost no rocks!
-
13m 12s
Yeah, pretty high!
-
13m 17s
After passing through the valley, the current has calmed down.
-
13m 27s
It's so beautiful.
-
13m 32s
The Sea of Japan appears before them.
-
13m 53s
Yes! Nice!
-
13m 58s
Kayaking the Sakazuki River is an experience Hugo will never forget.
-
14m 11s
First, before the waterfall, there was a lot of pressure building up.
-
14m 16s
Your heart is racing, and then you go for your line.
-
14m 20s
And once you're into it, nothing else matters.
-
14m 23s
It's hard to explain but nothing else matters,
-
14m 28s
and then you do your move and then you feel like you're flying.
-
14m 32s
Then you crash-land in the water and it's really soft.
-
14m 35s
It's a good feeling.
-
14m 37s
I think you can see from my face there was a lot of adrenalin.
-
14m 40s
I'm pretty happy now.
-
14m 44s
Bursting with melted snow from the spring thaw,
-
14m 48s
the Sakazuki River offers a thrilling experience
-
14m 52s
for adventurous kayakers.
