Throughout China's history,
-
0m 20s
the spirits of plants have been
transformed into incense. -
0m 28s
This is borneol,
-
0m 29s
a crystallized compound of a tropical plant.
-
0m 33s
It's believed to play a significant role in
the treatment and prevention of epidemics, -
0m 39s
Fu Jingliang has given new life
to the culture of incense in China. -
0m 44s
He's worked with incense
for more than 40 years. -
0m 50s
My concept of "incense culture"
-
0m 52s
represented something new in China.
-
0m 55s
My incense culture is an integrated system.
-
0m 59s
It involves the history
and theory behind incense, -
1m 02s
as well as aromatic herbs and medicines,
-
1m 05s
incense tools and sets,
-
1m 08s
and the blending of aromas.
-
1m 10s
So I think it's fair to give my concept
the name of "incense culture." -
1m 17s
The pandemic brought incense
into the spotlight in China, -
1m 21s
for both normal citizens
and medical professionals alike. -
1m 26s
The Language of Incense
-
1m 29s
We take a look into the
mysterious culture of incense. -
1m 36s
Dongcheng District, Beijing, China
-
1m 51s
The great poet Qu Yuan
revered incense as a mentor, -
1m 56s
one who taught him values
and ethical principles. -
1m 59s
He pondered whether
his deeds were right or good -
2m 03s
by comparing them to incense.
-
2m 08s
As a leader of modern
incense culture in China, -
2m 11s
Fu has taken on many new endeavors.
-
2m 14s
He's created a website,
-
2m 16s
published a book,
-
2m 17s
and even established a company
to promote the development of incense. -
2m 23s
Those efforts have established a solid
foundation for the development and heritage -
2m 28s
of incense culture.
-
2m 30s
Fu also hosts and attends incense lectures
and events all around China. -
2m 38s
We can divide China's incense culture
-
2m 40s
into four stages.
-
2m 42s
The first stage is ancient times,
-
2m 44s
the period from 4,000 B.C. to 2,000 B.C.
-
2m 48s
The second stage,
-
2m 49s
which includes the Spring and Autumn Periods
as well as the Warring States Period, -
2m 54s
is when the culture of incense
began to sprout. -
2m 57s
The third stage includes the Han,
Tang, and Song dynasties. -
3m 02s
It was a peak period of incense development.
-
3m 05s
But in the fourth stage,
-
3m 06s
the culture of incense faded.
-
3m 09s
His knowledge and experience
-
3m 11s
have helped him cultivate thousands of fans
and successors of incense culture. -
3m 17s
Based on the historical traditions
of ancient Chinese, -
3m 21s
who utilized incense in
almost every aspect of daily life. -
3m 26s
Fu has dedicated himself to popularize
the lifestyle of incense in the modern era. -
3m 33s
He has developed innovative burning incense,
-
3m 36s
incense accessories,
-
3m 37s
food and wine that make use of incense.
-
3m 42s
Perhaps most importantly,
-
3m 44s
he's developed incense "prescriptions"
believed to be good for health. -
3m 51s
Besides the purported health benefits,
-
3m 53s
these incense prescriptions
also allow modern people -
3m 57s
to relate to the experiences
of their ancestors. -
4m 05s
Fu's passion for incense
-
4m 06s
is closely related to
his experiences in childhood, -
4m 10s
as well as his family environment.
-
4m 16s
When I was about three or four years old,
-
4m 19s
I had to memorize a series of ancient books.
-
4m 22s
"Four Books and Five Classics,"
-
4m 25s
"Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor,"
-
4m 27s
"Tao Te Ching," and more.
-
4m 30s
As a child, I didn't understand those books.
-
4m 33s
But I memorized them as I was told.
-
4m 37s
Incense was indispensable in the everyday
life of the elder generations in my family, -
4m 43s
like my grandparents.
-
4m 45s
They always burnt incense
when they wanted to focus on something, -
4m 49s
or were doing something very important.
-
4m 52s
I didn't understand why,
-
4m 54s
but because of their influence,
burning incense became -
4m 57s
one of my habits as well.
-
5m 01s
I was naughty as a boy -
-
5m 03s
I'd steal incense and had lots of fun
-
5m 06s
burning, eating, and experimenting with it.
-
5m 09s
I caused lots of trouble.
-
5m 13s
Those childhood experiences
had a big influence on me. -
5m 17s
But during the special period,
it all came to a halt. -
5m 21s
For about 10 years,
I stopped dabbling in incense. -
5m 29s
During those 10 years,
-
5m 30s
Fu finished school,
-
5m 32s
then tried his hand
at jade carving, archaeology, -
5m 36s
and teaching calligraphy.
-
5m 40s
In the early 80s,
-
5m 42s
Fu was reading through ancient books in the
hopes of finding new direction for his life. -
5m 49s
From those books he found one of the
crucial keys of Chinese culture: incense -
5m 54s
and inspired him
to pursue the topic of incense. -
6m 00s
But he couldn't have imagined
the challenges along the way. -
6m 06s
I did encounter lots of difficulties
during this journey. -
6m 10s
For example, I decided to visit
reclusive masters of incense, -
6m 15s
to learn about the history
and heritage of incense, -
6m 19s
then combine that knowledge with my memories
of the books I read in my childhood. -
6m 25s
In addition, lots of incense ingredients
are difficult to find. -
6m 30s
I didn't know where to find them.
-
6m 32s
So, I had to figure out
where to find good ingredients first, -
6m 35s
and to understand how their
growth environment affects their quality. -
6m 40s
It was also difficult to
physically gather those ingredients, -
6m 44s
because of the potential injuries
and risks posed by wild animals, -
6m 48s
insects, and potential accidents.
-
6m 51s
I've often encountered lots of adversity,
-
6m 53s
but I often found it interesting,
-
6m 55s
because I enjoy having fun,
-
6m 57s
and I love to explore new things.
-
7m 00s
And since I believed this journey
I had chosen was meaningful, -
7m 04s
I just kept on going, without hesitation.
-
7m 11s
Over a span of nine years,
-
7m 13s
Fu traveled throughout
the Chinese countryside, -
7m 16s
collecting and experimenting with
high-quality incense ingredients. -
7m 22s
Finally, he was ready for the next step:
-
7m 25s
creating incense at the sacred Mount Tai.
-
7m 31s
I went to Mount Tai to verify
-
7m 33s
what I had learned from books
about the heritage and recipes of incense. -
7m 38s
As incense can easily be affected
by the presence of other scents, -
7m 42s
different environments
can affect the qualities, -
7m 45s
sillage, and effects of incense.
-
7m 49s
The air deep in the mountains
is relatively pure. -
7m 53s
Without interference from other scents,
-
7m 55s
I could relax and
focus on my work undisturbed. -
8m 00s
During the process,
-
8m 01s
I repeatedly compared the incense I made
-
8m 03s
to the recipes and techniques
passed down in ancient books. -
8m 07s
I wanted to find out
whether I was doing it right, -
8m 10s
and what level I had managed to reach.
-
8m 13s
For example,
-
8m 14s
if I wanted to reproduce incense
from the Han Dynasty, -
8m 17s
then what did I need to do?
-
8m 19s
Did I reproduce it successfully?
-
8m 21s
And what about incense
used in the Tang Dynasty? -
8m 25s
What incense was used
in the studies or palaces -
8m 27s
or even cure diseases of that time?
-
8m 30s
I need to test it out.
-
8m 34s
Over a period of three years,
-
8m 36s
Fu would spend up to
two consecutive months at a time -
8m 40s
living deep in the mountains.
-
8m 44s
Despite living with just the bare minimum,
he found enjoyment -
8m 48s
in the rugged lifestyle.
-
8m 53s
For each two-month stay,
-
8m 55s
I would bring 20 kilograms of food.
-
8m 58s
When I had eaten up all the food,
-
9m 00s
that told me two months' time had passed.
-
9m 03s
I felt I communicated with the ancients,
-
9m 06s
finding out the milestones of their lives.
-
9m 11s
During his time on Mount Tai,
-
9m 13s
Fu was able to recreate
2,600 blends of incense. -
9m 19s
Which becomes the foundation of
modern Chinese incense culture. -
9m 25s
In 2020,
-
9m 26s
incense sachets believed to protect against
the pandemic were in demand in China. -
9m 35s
People are fond of incense, simply by nature.
-
9m 40s
Since the period when the "Inner Canon
of the Yellow Emperor" was written, -
9m 45s
through practices in their works and lives,
-
9m 48s
the people of ancient China understood
the benefit of the aromatic plants, -
9m 53s
for example,
-
9m 55s
detoxifying snake venom,
-
9m 57s
pest control,
-
9m 58s
modifying temperament,
-
10m 00s
improve physical wellness,
-
10m 01s
and even to prevent epidemics.
-
10m 05s
The most important discovery
-
10m 08s
was that some aromatic plants
could be added into sachets, -
10m 12s
which would give off an aroma
as a result of the wearer's body heat. -
10m 18s
Then those aromas would be
absorbed through the skin, -
10m 21s
the nose or ears,
-
10m 23s
or the body's meridian network.
-
10m 26s
And these aromas would exert
certain physiological effects. -
10m 32s
As modern technology evolves,
-
10m 34s
the chemical components of the herbs are
extracted, analyzed, and experimented with. -
10m 39s
So we have the opportunity
to understand the mechanisms of incense. -
10m 45s
For example,
-
10m 46s
those aromas can enter our bodies
through our respiratory tracts, -
10m 50s
then help our nasal or
upper respiratory tract mucosae -
10m 55s
to produce a certain antibody
called immunoglobulin A, -
11m 00s
which can prevent bacteria
and viruses from surviving in our system. -
11m 06s
Xu started her research on aromatherapy
-
11m 10s
after attending the Sanskrit Chant Concert,
which was held by Fu in 2016. -
11m 18s
Over ten thousand people
attended the concert, -
11m 22s
where hundreds of kilograms of incense
were burnt. -
11m 27s
With the addition of stage lights
and Buddhist mantras, -
11m 30s
the event was a feast for the senses.
-
11m 36s
Incense has its own language.
-
11m 38s
Different incense diffuses different aromas.
-
11m 41s
Blending incense is similar to
telling a story with musical notes. -
11m 59s
My students asked me:
-
12m 01s
If incense has its own language,
-
12m 04s
then what would that language
sound like with music? -
12m 08s
How does incense influence a person,
-
12m 11s
from their emotions and mental state,
to their physical body? -
12m 16s
I hope to seek answers to these questions.
-
12m 54s
After 30 years spent working with incense,
-
12m 57s
Fu now views incense very differently
than he did in his childhood. -
13m 03s
Different aromas exist within the incense
made by different students, -
13m 08s
as everyone has their unique characteristics.
-
13m 12s
The heart's state of being,
-
13m 14s
the love and blessings,
-
13m 15s
the power of thought and intention,
-
13m 18s
they all go into the incense.
-
13m 21s
And for that reason,
I remind everyone to focus their attention, -
13m 25s
quiet the mind,
-
13m 26s
and become one with the incense.
-
13m 30s
Only through this approach can the incense
transcend beyond the limits of the world, -
13m 35s
guiding and assisting us to the essence
and spiritual energy of the universe. -
13m 41s
This brings us closer and closer to wisdom.
-
13m 47s
His incense-making process involves
communication with the spirit of plants, -
13m 53s
and the herbs reincarnates into the world
through Fu's masterful creation. -
14m 00s
Continuing Saint YU's Path
like a Diligent Swallow. -
14m 04s
Yu the Great was a king of
ancient China, a saint. -
14m 08s
He dedicated his life
to the well-being of people. -
14m 11s
And the swallow is regarded
as an auspicious bird in China. -
14m 15s
Swallows are also considered
incarnations of Fuxi, -
14m 18s
a hero in Chinese mythology.
-
14m 21s
I hope I can bring happiness
to others throughout my life, -
14m 24s
just like a swallow who follows
in the footsteps of saints. -
14m 31s
The incense culture of China,
rekindled by Fu, -
14m 35s
allows people to commune with nature,
-
14m 38s
and helps them to enrich their inner worlds.
-
14m 44s
Perhaps incense will also serve
as a bridge into the future. -
14m 49s
Continuing Saint YU's Path
like a Diligent Swallow.
