One Japanese musician has
the ears of many Ukrainians. -
0m 18s
Nakamura Tempei is a Japanese pianist,
-
0m 21s
based in Europe and the United States.
-
0m 26s
He's given performances
in countries around the globe, -
0m 29s
but Ukraine is by far his favorite.
-
0m 39s
The joy Ukrainians feel toward music,
-
0m 42s
and how they express that emotion,
-
0m 45s
that joy,
-
0m 46s
is so very passionate.
-
0m 49s
It was the kind of fervor that
I had long been searching for. -
0m 54s
And...
-
0m 55s
I fell in love...
-
0m 57s
with Ukraine.
-
1m 00s
Tempei tickles the ivories
-
1m 02s
with memories of Ukraine
and world peace never far from his mind. -

Nakamura Tempei made
his professional debut in 2008 -
1m 25s
and has been touring the world ever since.

-
1m 34s
He doesn't just perform indoors;
-
1m 36s
but busks on his electric keys
whenever and wherever he can. -

-
1m 48s
USA
-
1m 56s
He also composes.
-
1m 58s
To date, he has penned
more than 100 compositions, -
2m 01s
but only one bears the name of a nation –
-
2m 04s
Ukrainian Fantasy.
-
2m 06s
Ukrainian Fantasy
Composed by Nakamura Tempei -
2m 11s
Kyiv, Ukraine
May 2019 -
2m 12s
He wrote it after his first visit
to the country in 2010, -
2m 17s
and he visited Ukraine annually
until the Covid-19 pandemic struck. -
2m 22s
Tempei has traveled the world,
-
2m 24s
but Ukraine holds a
unique fascination for him. -
2m 39s
Ukraine was one country
that was under my radar. -
2m 43s
I got the feeling I would experience
things I'd never experienced before -
2m 48s
and see things that were
out of the ordinary for me, -
2m 51s
so I was excited about visiting the country.
-
2m 57s
The moment I landed the scenery
before my eyes was amazing, -
3m 02s
something I had never seen before.
-
3m 07s
That got my pulse racing.
-
3m 11s
One thing I felt that was different there
to the rest of Europe... -
3m 16s
was the joy Ukrainians feel toward music,
-
3m 20s
and how they express that emotion,
-
3m 23s
that joy,
-
3m 24s
is so very passionate.
-
3m 27s
It's like a mass of passion.
-
3m 29s
They seriously listen to music.
-
3m 34s
I mean...
-
3m 37s
It's the kind of fervor
that I was searching for. -
3m 42s
The kind of emotion I was searching for.
-
3m 46s
This made me fall in love with Ukraine...
-
3m 51s
and... from there I was touring,
almost every year. -
3m 58s
Kyiv, Ukraine
May 2019 -
4m 04s
Good evening.
-
4m 10s
How is everyone?
-
4m 15s
I am Nakamura Tempei.
Thank you. -

(Once in a Lifetime Encounter)
Composed by Nakamura Tempei -
4m 48s
Most of the compositions he performs
are his own. -
4m 59s
Tempei often appears on local TV shows
during his annual tours through the country. -
5m 08s
Japanese composer Nakamura Tempei,
whose melodies blend jazz, rock and classical, -
5m 14s
visited Kyiv and performed
with two 14-year-old violin prodigies. -
5m 24s
Despite their young age, both are
wonderful professional musicians. -
5m 31s
Today they played as a duo.
-
5m 46s
Why do you like to come back actually
our country and perform here again? -
5m 51s
Okay. I think, Ukraine has so many
good culture especially for music -
5m 58s
and there are so many talented musicians.
-
6m 01s
I am inspired (by)
many musicians from Ukraine, -
6m 05s
and I like Ukraine and Ukrainian people,
-
6m 07s
that's why (because)
people are very pure and modest, -
6m 11s
and this sense is little bit similar
and common with Japanese people. -
6m 22s
The pandemic curtailed
Tempei's visits to Ukraine -
6m 26s
And his disappointment
at being unable to play there -
6m 28s
was exacerbated by the Russian invasion.
-
6m 32s
Not a day goes by without him thinking about
the country and people he loves. -
6m 38s
Since I never imagined
it would come to war. -
6m 43s
I felt a deep sense of despair...
when the war began. -
6m 52s
It wasn't something happening
in some far-flung country. -
6m 55s
It is a place where...
-
6m 56s
all my good friends...
-
6m 59s
actually live.
-
7m 02s
Every day, I see tragic videos
-
7m 07s
and photos posted by my
Ukrainian friends on social media. -
7m 14s
It's surreal,
-
7m 15s
but...but these are people I know
-
7m 18s
and these are places I've been, you know?
-
7m 22s
Part of me feels it's surreal;
-
7m 25s
part of me is sad that
these places are being destroyed. -
7m 29s
It's more than me being sad;
-
7m 31s
it's obvious that they are
going through a tough time. -
7m 35s
There, I stopped to think about
what I could do for them, -
7m 38s
and I began a campaign
-
7m 41s
by uploading videos in support of Ukraine
-
7m 45s
and called for donations to their cause.
-
7m 50s
And that's the best I can do, right?
-
7m 54s
I can't just jump on a plane to help them.
-
7m 59s
Even if I did just turn up now,
I'd be in the way. -
8m 04s
The only avenue available to me
right now to support them -
8m 08s
is through my music.
-
8m 13s
Tempei uploads his past performances
and streams live on his YouTube channel, -
8m 18s
calling for donations
for the war in Ukraine. -
8m 22s
He had collected over 10,000 U.S. dollars,
in less than six months. -
8m 32s
An event that occurred
when Tempei was a child -
8m 35s
also motivates him in his charity.
-
8m 44s
When I was 14, an enormous earthquake
struck Kobe, where I lived. -
8m 50s
Our home was totally destroyed.
-
8m 55s
Tempei
-
8m 57s
Tempei began learning the piano
from the age of five, -
9m 00s
but quit when he was in junior high school.
-
9m 05s
Then disaster hit.
-
9m 09s
The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake
-
9m 11s
with its epicenter just south of Kobe
-
9m 13s
struck in the early morning of January 17, 1995.
-
9m 19s
The family was asleep
on the ground level of their home. -
9m 23s
The house around them collapsed,
-
9m 25s
but their lives were miraculously
saved by the piano Tempei played. -
9m 33s
After many years without touching one,
-
9m 36s
he took the piano up again at 18
with an interest in progressive rock. -
9m 41s
He entered a music school,
-
9m 43s
then went on to major in classical piano
at a university of arts. -
9m 47s
Upon graduation, he made his debut
as a solo pianist. -
9m 53s
The fact that I was a victim of the
Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, -
9m 58s
of course, has a lot to do with it.
-
10m 01s
Therefore, if there are people in need,
-
10m 03s
I have a strong desire
to help them out however I can. -
10m 11s
You also had the
Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 -
10m 15s
and the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake.
-
10m 18s
Now, it's the people of Ukraine.
-
10m 20s
And I can't just sit back and watch.
-
10m 23s
They are...
-
10m 26s
proud to be Ukrainian...
-
10m 28s
but...
-
10m 31s
at the same time they feel an inferiority
that might stem from their oppression. -
10m 36s
That's who they are.
-
10m 38s
And when I play one of their Ukrainian songs
-
10m 40s
or greet them in their own tongue,
-
10m 42s
they are very grateful.
-
10m 45s
Their applause is thunderous...
-
10m 47s
full of joy...
-
10m 50s
and at times everyone in the
concert hall will start singing. -
10m 57s
Nich Yaka Misyachna
(What a Moonlit Night)
Ukrainian folk song -
12m 01s
I have benefited so much
from knowing Ukrainians. -
12m 06s
And it's because I have benefited,
-
12m 08s
that I probably would not
forgive myself I didn't do anything. -
12m 13s
It goes without saying that
I'll reach out and lend them a hand. -
12m 18s
They have helped me so much.

Spiritual Road
Composed by Nakamura Tempei -
13m 04s
June 2022.
-
13m 06s
Kumano Hongu Taisha
Wakayama Prefecture -
13m 09s
With the continuing unrest,
-
13m 11s
Tempei could not see himself
visiting his beloved Ukraine. -
13m 16s
So, in lieu, he performed
at Kumano Hongu Taisha, -
13m 20s
a grand Shinto shrine in his native Japan,
-
13m 23s
where he dedicated his tune,
-
13m 25s
Spiritual Road,
-
13m 26s
to the deities in prayer
for peace in Ukraine. -
13m 57s
Life
-
14m 04s
Many people have lost their lives
during the coronavirus pandemic. -
14m 10s
People have even committed suicide.
-
14m 13s
And now you have many lives
being lost in Ukraine. -
14m 18s
I cannot..
-
14m 20s
save lives through my music,
-
14m 22s
but I can soothe their souls.
-
14m 27s
I want to...
-
14m 29s
save...
-
14m 31s
lives...
-
14m 32s
soothe souls...
-
14m 34s
as many as I can,
-
14m 35s
so I choose "life."
