In recent years, the gender gap in sports
-
0m 11s
has become a frequent
and controversial issue. -
0m 18s
Kathryn Bertine has been working
to eliminate the gen-der pay gap -
0m 22s
in professional sports in the United States.
-
0m 24s
Kathryn Bertine
Former Pro Cyclist & Activist -
0m 27s
As a pro cyclist until 2017,
-
0m 30s
she personally experienced
significant gender disparities -
0m 33s
in prize money, wages,
and racing opportunities. -
0m 38s
So when I started looking around at this,
-
0m 40s
I said,
"This doesn't make any sense!" -
0m 42s
"Why is it like this?"
-
0m 44s
And there were
no good answers to that question, -
0m 48s
so that's when I started.
-
0m 51s
Bertine now organizes
a non-profit organization -
0m 54s
that provides support to
female professional athletes -
0m 58s
who have suffered from treatment issues.
-
1m 05s
She was also instrumental in the revival
of the "Tour de France Femmes," -
1m 09s
the women's version of the Tour de France.
-
1m 11s
It was held for the first time in 13 years.
-
1m 18s
Sportswomen Shining With Equality
-
1m 19s
Bertine works for better treatment
for female athletes -
1m 22s
and chances for them to play active roles.
-
1m 25s
Let's hear what she has to say.
-
1m 27s
Sportswomen Shining With Equality
-
1m 34s
Oh, I absolutely believe that
gender equality in sport is possible, -
1m 39s
otherwise I wouldn't be here fighting for it.
-
1m 41s
So I fully believe that
we can tackle these issues. -
1m 44s
And, honestly, sometimes it can be
as easy as bringing that knowledge -
1m 47s
to the powers that be to
make that change happen. -
1m 52s
Sometimes it's not so easy
-
1m 53s
because the powers that be
don't want that responsibility. -
1m 57s
But that's where as an activist,
an advocate for what we believe in, -
2m 01s
we truly can make change happen
if we band together as a team, -
2m 04s
which I learned,
-
2m 06s
which I learned the hard way.
-
2m 07s
And magic is gonna happen
when you surround yourself with -
2m 10s
the same, like-minded people
who are willing to work and fight for -
2m 13s
this change to occur.
-
2m 19s
Bertine is currently the CEO
of the Homestretch Foundation, -
2m 24s
a non-profit organization that
supports female professional athletes. -
2m 32s
I'm going to show you
some of the Homestretch House. -
2m 35s
Here we go...
-
2m 37s
This is the dining room/office area...
-
2m 42s
Here is the living room
-
2m 43s
and the stretching room.
-
2m 48s
The Homestretch Foundation
offers housing, food, -
2m 51s
and a training environment
-
2m 52s
for athletes who are professionals
-
2m 54s
but lack a base salary,
prize money, or sponsor support, -
2m 57s
and whose income is
below the poverty line. -
3m 05s
Even today, many female athletes face
-
3m 07s
a glass ceiling and a huge wage gap
-
3m 10s
that prevent them from devoting
themselves solely to competition. -
3m 20s
Yeah, it's so nice being here
-
3m 22s
and Kathryn putting me up and
providing her house to all these athletes -
3m 26s
and being able to train and
not really think about anything else -
3m 30s
and just having that dedicated time.
-
3m 32s
Because I had just
such a stressful school semester. -
3m 36s
I had been working full-time
-
3m 38s
and then I had been in school full-time
-
3m 40s
and training full-time,
-
3m 42s
and so for me to come here and
just be able to train and focus on myself -
3m 47s
has been so helpful.
-
3m 57s
Back in 2015 and 2016, by the time
I got into the World Tour level, -
4m 01s
I almost had to quit the sport
-
4m 03s
because I couldn't afford to just be
a professional cyclist at the highest level. -
4m 08s
I also had to carry 1-2 part-time jobs
-
4m 12s
just to support myself
while training and racing. -
4m 15s
Yet, had I been a man
at the World Tour level, -
4m 18s
that wouldn't have been the case.
-
4m 20s
I thought, "Wouldn't it be amazing
if we could help the female pro cyclists -
4m 24s
who need a place to live and train for free,
-
4m 27s
without paying rent,
without paying utilities." -
4m 29s
So that was where the idea came from.
-
4m 32s
As they say,
necessity is the mother of invention, -
4m 35s
and for me, I needed those things
and they weren't available, -
4m 38s
so I thought maybe we could
make that happen for the next generation. -
4m 45s
Bertine was a figure skater
until the age of 23, -
4m 48s
and eventually she started cycling.
-
4m 52s
Until 2017, she was a professional cyclist.
-
4m 55s
The titles she won
included Caribbean Champion, -
4m 58s
and at one point she was even
aiming to compete in the Olympics. -
5m 05s
Bertine actively challenged herself
in various competitions and activities. -
5m 10s
The force behind her positivity
was her father. -
5m 17s
I could see from the picture
when he was trying to hold you. -
5m 22s
That's one of my favorite pictures!
That was my dad. -
5m 24s
I was jumping off a stool as a 4-year-old.
-
5m 28s
I was lucky to grow up with the kind of
parents who were just supportive, -
5m 34s
specifically my dad.
-
5m 35s
He was a big motivator for me,
-
5m 38s
just because he was positive
-
5m 40s
and he believed in me.
-
5m 41s
And even in those skating competitions,
-
5m 43s
if I had one of those days
where I just fell down all the time, -
5m 46s
he'd be the first one to say,
-
5m 47s
"You can do it!"
-
5m 48s
"I thought you won."
-
5m 49s
"You look great!"
-
5m 51s
So it might be genetic
-
5m 52s
that I have this gene in me about positivity!
-
5m 56s
But when I think about
my biggest supporter being my dad, -
6m 01s
and he's no longer with us,
but he lives on in spirit, -
6m 04s
and I take a lot of that energy
-
6m 06s
and I think like, "Alright, dad
how do you feel about this?" -
6m 10s
And it helps, it helps a lot.
-
6m 16s
During the six years since
the Homestretch Foundation was established, -
6m 20s
it's been used by 75 athletes
from 17 countries. -
6m 30s
Bertine carries out
negotiation with the teams -
6m 32s
with whom the athletes have made a contract
-
6m 34s
in order to ensure that
they get paid their "base salary" -
6m 37s
as required by the
UCI, International Cycling Union. -
6m 43s
She has also continued to appeal to the UCI
-
6m 46s
for gender equality in terms of
a minimum wage and race content. -
6m 57s
During the last ten years
-
6m 58s
in which Bertine has
dedicated herself to these issues, -
7m 01s
the cycling world has seen
incremental improvements. -
7m 09s
UCI, the International Cycling Union,
-
7m 11s
has pledged to raise the
minimum base salary for women -
7m 14s
to the same amount as for men by 2023.
-
7m 22s
Equal pay!
-
7m 28s
Today, in the world of sports,
-
7m 30s
female athletes are increasingly
raising their voices for their own rights. -
7m 36s
The players who led the U.S. women's
soccer team to the World Cup championship -
7m 40s
complained about the inequality of
prize money between men and women. -
7m 45s
We need to come together as a country
-
7m 47s
and try to figure out ways to
make this place better for everyone -
7m 51s
and I don't think any of
his policies really have in mind -
7m 53s
of trying to make it better for everyone.
-
7m 56s
At the 2022 Beijing winter Olympics,
-
7m 59s
the lack of a women's quota
in the ski jumping large hill competition -
8m 02s
was called into question.
-
8m 05s
Why am I not there?
-
8m 06s
Why don't I have medal chances, too?
-
8m 09s
Why don't I have this experience as well?
-
8m 13s
Providing equal competition opportunities
is also a major challenge. -
8m 17s
Over the past few years,
-
8m 18s
Bertine has been focusing on reviving the
women's version of the Tour de France. -
8m 25s
The "Tour de France Femmes"
was held from 1984 to 2009. -
8m 30s
However, due to problems with
its revenue and administration, -
8m 34s
it ceased to exist.
-
8m 39s
For Bertine, who was
a pro cyclist at the time, -
8m 42s
participating in the Tour de France
was something to aspire to. -
8m 47s
In 2013, in order to seek revival of the
"Tour de France Femmes," -
8m 51s
she co-founded a campaigning organization
called "Le Tour Entier," -
8m 55s
which appealed to ASO,
the Tour de France organizer, -
8m 58s
for its return by collecting
signatures and other means. -
9m 03s
The petition for "Le Tour Entier"
on Change.org -
9m 07s
garnered over 98,000 signatures,
-
9m 11s
and we were still going strong,
-
9m 14s
even after it was declared a victory.
-
9m 17s
And then the media got involved
and kept asking ASO, -
9m 20s
"What are you going to do?
What are you going to say?" -
9m 22s
And ASO didn't like us at all!
-
9m 25s
They felt that we were being
quite annoying to them, -
9m 29s
which is a good sign of victory!
-
9m 32s
ASO was very nervous.
-
9m 33s
They said,
"We just want to do a one-day race. -
9m 36s
We don't know if this whole
equality thing is going to work." -
9m 39s
And we said,
"It's OK to do one race the first year, -
9m 43s
but the agreement was
-
9m 45s
they would grow the Tour de France
incrementally 3-5 days each year -
9m 49s
until it would be full equity
with the men's race." -
9m 56s
In 2014,
-
9m 58s
thanks to the appeal,
a one-day race, "La Cruz," -
10m 02s
was held during the
period of the Tour de France. -
10m 13s
The 2014 race was a huge success
-
10m 16s
in terms of sponsors, visibility,
viewing, it was incredible. -
10m 20s
And ASO said,
"OK, we will do this again in 2015." -
10m 26s
And they kept the one-day format,
-
10m 28s
and then they started shifting the race
from this location to this location, -
10m 31s
but they didn't stick true to their promise
of growing la Cruz to the Tour de France. -
10m 39s
Bertine and her team had been calling for
the return of a multi-day "stage race," -
10m 44s
so they were not satisfied with
a one-day only event. -
10m 50s
In the eight years
that have passed since then, -
10m 53s
their efforts have borne fruit,
-
10m 54s
and the "Tour de France Femmes"
was finally revived in 2022. -
11m 04s
We've always wondered
why we couldn't have a week-long stage race. -
11m 13s
But this year our ream finally came true!
-
11m 19s
The men's race lasts 21 days,
-
11m 21s
whereas the women's race,
with only eight stages, lasts eight days. -
11m 26s
24 teams of female athletes competed in 2022.
-
11m 30s
The race was televised throughout Europe,
-
11m 32s
with the audience share
peaking at 45.6% in France, -
11m 36s
and an average audience share
of 45% in the Netherlands. -
11m 41s
So for us to now have "Tour de France"
be part of the name of this race -
11m 47s
is a huge victory.
-
11m 49s
We are back. That's a good sign,
-
11m 51s
and we are very much applauding
that this race is happening. -
11m 54s
However,
-
11m 56s
Tour de France Femmes is 8 days,
-
11m 58s
and the men race 21 days.
-
12m 01s
So there is still that discrepancy of
-
12m 03s
"Oh, well, the women possibly
couldn't do 21 days!" -
12m 07s
And we're still changing the system,
-
12m 11s
because that's not OK,
-
12m 13s
it's not OK that the women only get
a fraction of what the men get, -
12m 17s
based on the idea that they can only do that.
-
12m 20s
We can do much more than that!
-
12m 24s
Bertine says there is one more important
factor in redressing the gender gap. -
12m 30s
The most important part
in fighting for equity is to have -
12m 35s
equal visibility,
-
12m 36s
equal broadcasting,
-
12m 38s
and that, too, is something that can,
and should be, mandated at the highest level. -
12m 44s
And right now in women's pro cycling,
-
12m 48s
they will broadcast 3-6 hours of a men's race,
-
12m 53s
and women are usually lucky
if they get half the broadcast time, -
12m 57s
sometimes not even at all.
-
12m 59s
And that is what has to change
and be a mandate at the World Tour level, -
13m 04s
because otherwise it's a
chicken-and-egg cycle of saying, -
13m 07s
"Oh, well, how can we support
women's cycling if we don't see it?" -
13m 11s
"How can we see it if it's not supported?"
-
13m 13s
So the only way to end that is
for the Federation to actually say, -
13m 18s
"No, it has to be mandatory
equal media coverage -
13m 21s
for the men's and the women's races."
-
13m 25s
We asked Bertine to share her motto.
-
13m 33s
I'm not an artist!
-
13m 36s
So we picked this phrase
-
13m 38s
"Together we all move forward!"
-
13m 39s
because that really is the truth of
how we get anything good done in life: -
13m 44s
to band together,
-
13m 46s
to not do everything individually,
-
13m 48s
but just do it with others in mind,
-
13m 51s
and with a team around you.
-
13m 52s
So, "Together we all move forward!"
-
13m 54s
has been the creed at Homestretch Foundation
since its inception. -
13m 58s
It's how we get stuff done,
-
14m 00s
and things that are meaningful in this world.
-
14m 04s
There is a lot of times people will ask,
-
14m 06s
"Oh, do you want to franchise Homestretch?
-
14m 09s
Shouldn't we have many more of these?"
-
14m 11s
And the answer is,
-
14m 12s
"No. What we would love
is to shut Homestretch down -
14m 16s
because everybody's being paid equally
-
14m 18s
and we're no longer necessary!"
-
14m 21s
And wouldn't it be great to see
Homestretch transform into something -
14m 24s
that could help the lower athletes
get to the next level -
14m 28s
rather than have to fight for salary,
-
14m 30s
but to be the medium that has a pipeline
-
14m 34s
from grass roots
-
14m 35s
to World Tour;
-
14m 36s
where can we fall on that spectrum to
help the next athletes that are in need? -
14m 42s
That to me would be really great,
-
14m 44s
so I would love to see
Homestretch transform in the future. -
14m 48s
But do we want a franchise
for women's unequal pay? -
14m 52s
Absolutely not!
-
14m 55s
Together we all move forward!
