Direct Talk

0m 11s
The fashion industry has been hit hard
by the war in Ukraine -
0m 15s
That's as many textile industries
depend on petroleum-based materials -
0m 20s
which have been soaring in price.
-
0m 25s
Giulio Bonazzi has come under the spotlight
due to these circumstances -
0m 31s
He is the Chief Executive of Italy's Aquafil.
-
0m 37s
His company uses revolutionary technology
-
0m 40s
and turns used synthetic materials
-
0m 43s
into a fiber called ECONYL.
-
0m 48s
Waste is used
-
0m 50s
and there is obviously less dependency on
gas, oil, and coal suppliers. -
0m 58s
Many luxury brands
have started using Bonazzi's -
1m 01s
regenerated nylon as prices of
synthetic materials go up. -
1m 07s
Major trading companies and manufacturers
are also keen on the new technology -
1m 12s
and have started its use.
-
1m 15s
We ask him where the fashion and textile
industries are headed with "innovation" -
1m 21s
as they face the current challenges.
-
1m 23s
Turning Waste Into Luxury Brands
-
1m 27s
Nylon has been recycled for many decades,
-
1m 31s
but with conventional technologies
in the classic mechanical cycle -
1m 36s
as plastic for motor vehicles
or other applications. -
1m 43s
While ECONYL is the only
manufacturing plant nowadays -
1m 48s
capable of recycling
post-consumption nylon waste. -
1m 55s
Rather than starting the process
from products develop from oil refining, -
2m 00s
it starts entirely from waste
-
2m 02s
like fishing nets, carpets, rugs,
-
2m 06s
plastic products or textiles
that come from usage -
2m 10s
and not from pre-industrial recycling.
-
2m 17s
Nylon is a strong synthetic material
made from petroleum. -
2m 21s
Nylon
-
2m 26s
Yet it's difficult to recycle
using conventional methods. -
2m 34s
It's used for fishing nets
and carpet among other items. -
2m 40s
Used nets often turn into waste in the ocean.
-
2m 43s
It's becoming 10% of all marine debris
-
2m 46s
having a huge impact on the environment
-
2m 49s
not only floating on the water
-
2m 51s
but washing up on seashores.
-
2m 59s
Bonazzi's Aquafil is a pioneer
in the reuse of this discarded material. -
3m 04s
Aquafil Headquarter
Arco, Italy -
3m 07s
He chemically treats the thrown away nets,
rags and carpets -
3m 12s
and makes the recycled product ECONYL.
-
3m 20s
The upcycling method turns
what was once thrown away -
3m 24s
into a high-quality product
that is eco-friendly -
3m 27s
and is attracting global attention.
-
3m 34s
The thread is starting to be used by
various well-known brands around the world. -
3m 44s
ECONYL is nylon,
-
3m 47s
it is nothing but nylon.
-
3m 50s
Using ECONYL is easy for clients
-
3m 53s
because they don't have to change anything,
-
3m 56s
so we don't give any limitations
to designers and engineers -
4m 01s
in creating their beautiful products.
-
4m 04s
I acknowledge that at first
it was difficult to introduce the product, -
4m 09s
but then a series of companies
and people fell in love with ECONYL, -
4m 14s
like for example Stella McCartney,
-
4m 18s
who was one of the first ones to adopt it,
-
4m 21s
or Gucci, who made ECONYL famous
in the fashion industry as luxury products, -
4m 28s
and from there,
-
4m 29s
today we have more than 2000 customers
-
4m 32s
in the world who use ECONYL.
-
4m 35s
Another example I must mention is
-
4m 37s
the Kering conglomerate organization.
-
4m 41s
It had a group of people who were doing
research on sustainable materials, -
4m 47s
and here they learned about ECONYL
-
4m 51s
and use it in their brands and subsidiaries.
-
4m 59s
ECONYL has become the center of attention
-
5m 02s
due to the nature of the fashion industry.
-
5m 07s
The so-called low priced fast fashion
-
5m 10s
is leading to
large amounts of discarded clothes. -
5m 16s
Fast fashion also uses
abundant amounts of water and energy -
5m 21s
despite its low recycling rate.
-
5m 27s
In 2019 the United Nations has called for
urgent improvements in the fashion, -
5m 32s
textile, and other related businesses
-
5m 35s
to become more eco-friendly.
-
5m 41s
The fashion industry should absolutely change
-
5m 44s
because it is becoming
one of the sectors that unfortunately -
5m 48s
pollutes the most
-
5m 50s
and contributes the most to climate change
due to the emissions it generates. -
5m 58s
ECONYL with its special process
has an intrinsic content of energy -
6m 04s
that is more than 60%
less than conventional nylon. -
6m 10s
There is neither hazardous materials,
nor solvents, -
6m 14s
and nothing is used
except steam energy and heat, -
6m 19s
and just a small amount of a catalyst
-
6m 22s
that is used in the food industry to
speed up the depolymerization reaction. -
6m 30s
Additionally, Aquafil uses energy
-
6m 33s
coming entirely from renewable sources,
-
6m 36s
so we succeeded in
committing a carbon footprint of -
6m 40s
less than 90% compared to conventional nylon.
-
6m 46s
By taking resources from the planet
-
6m 48s
and contributing to putting
harmful substances in the atmosphere, -
6m 52s
sooner or later
we would reach a point of no return -
6m 57s
and to a solution that was no longer
sustainable economically or environmentally. -
7m 04s
So, I began to rethink about
what needed to be done. -
7m 10s
Aquafil that makes ECONYL
-
7m 12s
was founded in 1965 by Bonazzi's father.
-
7m 22s
Giulio Bonazzi took over the business in 2001.
-
7m 25s
That's when he realized
that the textile industry -
7m 28s
was highly dependent on petroleum
-
7m 30s
and vulnerable to its supply.
-
7m 33s
So recycling nylon
became part of his mission. -
7m 41s
At the beginning everyone was smiling,
-
7m 44s
our competitors were
all convinced that we had failed. -
7m 49s
Others had tried before us,
-
7m 50s
very big and important companies
tried and failed. -
7m 54s
Why?
-
7m 55s
Because it is difficult
to explain it in two words. -
7m 58s
In the spring of 2008,
-
8m 00s
a CEO of one of Europe's largest banks
-
8m 03s
came to me to hear
what my approach and philosophy was. -
8m 08s
I told him about ECONYL
and what we wanted to do, -
8m 12s
we wanted to make only recycled products
-
8m 15s
and change the way we made products
-
8m 20s
That gentleman literally
jumped out of his chair, walked away, -
8m 24s
and said to me
"I will never lend you a euro." -
8m 28s
We made mistakes,
-
8m 29s
but we convinced ourselves
that we didn't have to go back. -
8m 34s
So, there has always been from my side
-
8m 37s
all the support to our people
and to our technicians -
8m 41s
to get to the concrete solutions
to recycle nylon, -
8m 46s
it took several years
-
8m 47s
but we finally succeeded.
-
8m 52s
In 2011 the production of ECONYL was started.
-
8m 59s
Aquafil collaborated with
various environmental groups -
9m 02s
and governments around the world
-
9m 04s
to efficiently source discarded
nylon products. -
9m 13s
In the area of fishing net collection,
-
9m 15s
we have discovered at least
for those who make fishing nets -
9m 18s
for aquaculture or for large fishing vessels,
-
9m 21s
that there are companies that
do a net maintenance service, -
9m 26s
and they were our first, let's say,
relationships, our first connections -
9m 32s
that instead of sending the mats
to landfill or incineration, -
9m 36s
they started sending them to us.
-
9m 41s
Today we are also engaged directly
with the collection of these, fishing nets, -
9m 47s
in Norway we have a holding company
-
9m 49s
that collects fishing nets that are used in
salmon farming and other fish. -
9m 57s
In carpet and rugs,
we are focused in California -
10m 01s
because there is a so called
-
10m 02s
extended responsibility program
of the producer, -
10m 05s
so let's say there is an
organized system by the state -
10m 09s
for there to be fees and
contributions for those who -
10m 12s
instead of sending the carpets to the landfill,
-
10m 15s
collect them and then recycle them.
-
10m 19s
Today we not only have
our own facility to recycle carpets, -
10m 24s
but we have even started
to collect carpets directly. -
10m 28s
It's either done relatively simply
-
10m 30s
by putting bins directly
at the carpet and rug sellers -
10m 34s
or it's done directly with the installers,
-
10m 38s
the ones who come to people's homes
-
10m 41s
to exchange the old carpet
for the new carpet. -
10m 46s
If one goes at 5 a.m. in Phoenix,
to our collection center, -
10m 51s
one sees the line of pickup trucks
-
10m 54s
and there is the line of people
-
10m 56s
who come and bring the carpet
they dismantled the previous day -
11m 00s
from Mr. Smith's or Mrs. White's.
-
11m 06s
The pandemic and war in Ukraine
-
11m 08s
have impacted Bonazzi's mission
of recycling nylon. -
11m 14s
He now has a strong sense of urgency
than ever before to speed up reforms. -
11m 23s
Covid and war,
-
11m 25s
this terrible problem of war,
-
11m 28s
were two moments that absolutely
raised awareness of the need for change. -
11m 36s
War is showing that especially for Europe,
-
11m 39s
energy dependency and
indiscriminate energy consumption, -
11m 43s
unfortunately causes
far more serious problems -
11m 47s
than those of the environment.
-
11m 52s
Europe has already set
very important goals for itself, -
11m 57s
but other countries, like Japan,
which is certainly ahead in this respect, -
12m 02s
are developing legislation to
make producers accountable for what they do, -
12m 09s
not only for the profits
-
12m 11s
but also for the way resources are used.
-
12m 16s
So we have validated until today
a very important set of waste, -
12m 22s
worth potentially
several million tons to recycle -
12m 26s
but we still have many other types of waste
-
12m 30s
where to develop technology specifically
to be able to recycle them. -
12m 35s
There is still a lot of work to be done.
-
12m 41s
Aquafil uses 2% of its revenue
for research and development. -
12m 51s
That includes coming up
with recycling technologies -
12m 54s
but also on the innovation of
conventional synthetic fibers. -
13m 01s
Even if you recycle
100 percent of the products, -
13m 05s
and that will not always be possible,
-
13m 08s
this will never be able to meet the
world's demand for nylon or plastic or fiber. -
13m 16s
so recycling is not enough
-
13m 18s
to guarantee enough resources coming from
the planet for future generations. -
13m 25s
You also have to produce the primary product,
the one before recycling, in a sustainable way. -
13m 32s
Now nylon 6 is a unique case,
-
13m 35s
I call it a super molecule
-
13m 37s
because it can come from petroleum
in its conventional technology, -
13m 41s
and it can also be recycled perfectly
through the ECONYL depolymerization system, -
13m 46s
or it can also come from sugar fermentation,
-
13m 50s
so from renewable raw materials.
-
13m 53s
This is what we are doing with Genomatica.
-
13m 57s
We have already produced more than
two tons of this bio-based nylon -
14m 01s
and now we have a demonstration plant,
-
14m 04s
which is a real plant,
-
14m 07s
no longer a pilot
but already a small industrial plant -
14m 12s
that produced 50 kg/hr in operation
-
14m 16s
for about eight weeks in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
-
14m 22s
We are all still at the beginning
of this incredible adventure. -
14m 28s
Bonazzi left us with these words.
-
14m 34s
When I see a landfill, I see a gold mine.
-
14m 38s
This is a very important thing
-
14m 40s
because we need to start thinking of waste
as one of our greatest resources, -
14m 45s
it should no longer be a problem,
-
14m 48s
but on the contrary,
it should be an opportunity.
