Kampo is a Japanese traditional medicine that is based on information contained in an ancient Chinese classic. A Kampo formulation has numerous medicinal properties and is effective for many symptoms. This makes Kampo suitable for treating long COVID, which has various symptoms. We look at how Kampo formulations are prescribed, through 1 patient who was cured. We also introduce the latest scientific findings on how Kampo can prevent depressive symptoms, and how it can prevent coronavirus infection itself.

From the shells of shellfish and insects to plants, animals and minerals, various natural ingredients are used to create formulations aimed at healing the body
-
0m 18s
in the Japanese traditional medicine called "Kampo."
-
0m 23s
Many people think that Kampo medicine is a traditional Chinese medicine.
-
0m 29s
But it's actually Japanese and it's based on ancient Chinese medicine that entered Japan and developed independently from the original version.
-
0m 39s
In recent years, there have been increasing studies in Japan that prove the efficacy of Kampo.
-
0m 46s
Today we look out for Kampo can be used for COVID-19.
-
0m 52s
The Kitasato University Oriental Medicine Research Center in Tokyo has the longest history of studying Oriental medicine in Japan.
-
1m 02s
It has been conducting research to establish Kampo as a science-based medicine.
-
1m 08s
The center is currently looking at how to use Kampo to treat and prevent COVID-19.
-
1m 17s
Dr. Odaguchi, such a great pleasure to meet you. Thank you so much for your time today.
-
1m 22s
You're welcome.
-
1m 27s
The center is headed by Hiroshi Odaguchi.
-
1m 33s
There're so any different drawers here.
-
1m 37s
How many are there?
-
1m 38s
I guess these are for your Kampo medicine formulations.
-
1m 42s
About 200.
-
1m 45s
What is this one here, for example?
-
1m 48s
Cicada shells.
-
1m 51s
What's the one next to it?
-
1m 53s
"Shiso," or perilla leaves.
-
1m 59s
The drawers each contain a different "crude drug," or ingredient, for Kampo medicines.
-
2m 06s
Crude drugs are dried versions of natural products that have medicinal properties.
-
2m 11s
In Kampo, they're blended into formulations.
-
2m 18s
Kampo has its roots in this early-3rd-century Chinese classic.
-
2m 24s
It explains how to treat acute infectious illnesses.
-
2m 28s
The Japanese used the information in this text to adapt crude drug formulations and diagnoses to fit the local climate and people's physical constitutions.
-
2m 39s
The product of their efforts is the traditional Japanese medicine known as Kampo.
-
2m 48s
How do you know, how do you mix them and formulate for each patients?
-
2m 53s
There are commonly used, standard formulations.
-
3m 01s
We start with these formulations and make changes.
-
3m 07s
- So there're thousands of potential of different combinations.
- Combinations are limitless. -
3m 14s
At the research center, specialists examine each patient's constitution and symptoms, then combine crude drugs into a custom-made medicine.
-
3m 29s
Formulations are packed into individual doses.
-
3m 40s
Patients boil the formulations in hot water to extract the medicinal properties.
-
3m 46s
They divide the liquid into two or three portions and drink it over the day.
-
3m 51s
This is how Kampo is taken traditionally.
-
3m 59s
What are some of the key differences between Western medicine and Kampo medicine?
-
4m 06s
In Western medicine, pills or tablets
tend to contain one key ingredient. -
4m 16s
They have one strong ingredient,
mixed with additives. -
4m 25s
But in Kampo, each crude drug, such as this one,
has hundreds of medicinal properties. -
4m 34s
We combine them into a formulation
that has thousands of medicinal properties. -
4m 43s
Kampo and Western medicine
are completely different. -
4m 53s
In Western medicine, doctors prescribe specific drugs for specific symptoms.
-
5m 01s
However, Kampo combines crude drugs that each contain several medicinal properties.
-
5m 07s
Kampo formulations can therefore be effective for a variety of symptoms.
-
5m 15s
Many people globally are suffering from so-called "long COVID," or long-term effects of coronavirus infection.
-
5m 23s
Its more than 50 symptoms include fatigue, headache, difficulty breathing, joint pain and impaired sense of taste.
-
5m 31s
Symptoms can vary from patient to patient.
-
5m 37s
In January 2021, the research center established an outpatient clinic dedicated to long COVID.
-
5m 46s
70 percent of the 170 patients it treated showed an improvement in symptoms.
-
5m 56s
The causes of long COVID are unknown,
but it leads to many symptoms. -
6m 05s
Kampo can treat symptoms with unknown causes.
This is difficult for Western medicine. -
6m 14s
Therefore, Kampo is a suitable for long COVID.
-
6m 21s
20-year-old dancer Takai Nanami struggled with long COVID.
-
6m 26s
She was infected with the coronavirus in August 2021.
-
6m 34s
A few days after recovering from COVID-19, she began to notice abnormalities.
-
6m 42s
It was painful to speak loudly.
I couldn't be my cheerful self. -
6m 51s
I didn't feel like talking.
I could barely mumble. -
6m 59s
That continued for a while.
I think these were aftereffects. -
7m 08s
One day, my parents asked me,
"Aren't you going to your dance class?" -
7m 14s
I used to love dancing,
but I guess I stopped going. -
7m 21s
My parents worried about me,
and did some research. -
7m 28s
She also experienced memory loss.
-
7m 32s
Two weeks after she began having the mysterious symptoms, she visited the research center's clinic.
-
7m 42s
I had joint pain that worsened
around the time I started going to the clinic. -
7m 51s
That was the most difficult time for me.
I kept massaging my legs like this. -
8m 01s
In addition to joint pain, she also had symptoms such as fatigue, cough, and headache.
-
8m 11s
Kampo practitioners check the patient's pulse, tongue, and stomach.
-
8m 15s
They also try to identify the patient's constitution by checking blood flow and the presence of allergies, diarrhea and constipation.
-
8m 27s
Listening to the patients' complaints is critical.
-
8m 32s
In an examination, it's important to
listen carefully to what the patient has to say. -
8m 41s
Finding out what symptoms appeared,
and in what order they appeared, is crucial. -
8m 54s
It's necessary to listen attentively.
-
8m 59s
Kampo practitioners classify the progress of disease accompanied by fever into six stages, from the initial stage to the life-threatening stage.
-
9m 11s
At the far left is the initial stage of an illness.
-
9m 14s
It involves headache and joint pain, like the first signs of a cold.
-
9m 22s
The second stage is accompanied by the kinds of symptoms that appear when a cold worsens.
-
9m 27s
They include cough and fatigue.
-
9m 32s
Takai complained of symptoms belonging to the first and second stages.
-
9m 39s
A common formulation for such patients is "saikokeishito."
-
9m 44s
It's a combination of nine crude drugs, including a parsley-family plant called "saiko," jujube fruit, and ginseng root.
-
9m 53s
Takai took saikokeishito twice a day.
-
10m 01s
It was bitter - incredibly bitter.
But I finally got used to it. -
10m 10s
One month after she started taking the medicine, her joint pain disappeared.
-
10m 14s
And after another month, she was feeling like her old self.
-
10m 19s
I was so happy. I wonder what would've
happened if my symptoms continued. -
10m 27s
My parents and I thought I'd never dance again.
-
10m 35s
But now, I can dance, and I've regained
my normal life. I'm really happy. -
10m 49s
With Western medicine, treatment of an illness
is not possible without knowing the cause. -
10m 56s
We often get patients who were told that.
-
10m 59s
With Kampo, there are always clues we can use
to find a way to treat patients. -
11m 08s
That's the strength of Kampo.
-
11m 13s
Kampo developed based on experience over a long period.
-
11m 17s
But critics have said there is a lack of scientific evidence for its use.
-
11m 24s
Kampo specialists have conducted various studies to overcome this, and produced promising results.
-
11m 34s
"Kososan" is one of the scientifically verified Kampo formulations.
-
11m 39s
It's made of five plant-based crude drugs, including the peel of a Japanese citrus; shiso, or perilla leaf; and the roots and stems of ginger.
-
11m 54s
Kososan is prescribed to patients who complain of depressive symptoms, that have increased amid the pandemic.
-
12m 06s
The effects were verified in an experiment using mice, and the results were published in a journal in 2022.
-
12m 15s
Naoki Ito is one of the authors.
-
12m 22s
Kososan has been used clinically for
patients with depressive symptoms. -
12m 29s
But there was no scientific proof on
its efficacy, nor the reason for its efficacy. -
12m 37s
We also wanted to show kososan's
effects on pre-symptomatic patients. -
12m 44s
That's why we began this research.
-
12m 48s
The researchers used two types of kososan.
-
12m 52s
The only difference was the type of citrus peel they contained.
-
12m 56s
One was a regular kososan containing the peel of a Japanese citrus called "unshiu."
-
13m 02s
The other contained the peel of a citrus that's rich in a substance called nobiletin.
-
13m 10s
In the experiment, they used a strain of mice that age faster than usual.
-
13m 17s
These mice age at about 1.5 times faster than regular mice, and develop depression 17 weeks after birth.
-
13m 29s
Ito labeled the fast-aging mice at seven weeks of age as being in a pre-symptomatic state.
-
13m 39s
From this point, the group started giving the mice either water, kososan, or nobiletin-rich kososan, and compared the changes in them.
-
13m 52s
The mice were exposed to stress in their 19th week of age, when they were expected to have depression.
-
14m 00s
Healthy mice move around to escape stress.
-
14m 03s
But those with depression give up and remain immobile for long periods.
-
14m 12s
This graph shows the lengths of time the mice remained still.
-
14m 16s
Compared with the mice that were given water, those given either type of kososan had shorter periods of immobility.
-
14m 24s
The kososan-fed mice were more resistant to stress and more active.
-
14m 32s
In addition, the fast-aging mice given nobiletin-rich kososan were immobile for about the same period of time as regular mice.
-
14m 40s
In other words, they aged fast, but were just as active as regular mice.
-
14m 50s
Start taking a Kampo formulation
before abnormalities are found, and disease development can be prevented.
I think the data have shown that. -
15m 06s
Ito also looked at brain inflammation, which can cause depressive symptoms.
-
15m 16s
He measured the amount of an inflammation-causing substance in the brains of the mice.
-
15m 24s
The fast-aging mice that were given nobiletin-rich kososan had a small amount of this substance, similar to regular mice.
-
15m 33s
This showed that taking nobiletin-rich kososan can suppress brain inflammation.
-
15m 39s
Western drugs cannot cure
mental disorders like depression. -
15m 46s
Antidepressants have many side effects,
and need to be taken for a long time. -
15m 54s
But many Kampo formulations have
few side effects, even if taken for long periods. -
16m 01s
Kampo formulations don't need to be taken alone.
-
16m 06s
Combining them with Western drugs
would provide the best effect. -
16m 11s
I hope our research will help enable that.
-
16m 17s
It's becoming clear that Kampo can also prevent the worsening of COVID-19.
-
16m 26s
A team led by Sumiko Hyuga is researching this topic.
-
16m 36s
The team focused on a crude drug called "mao," or Ephedra herb.
-
16m 41s
Its extract is known to be effective against influenza and contains ephedrine alkaloids, which have medicinal properties.
-
16m 49s
However, the alkaloids also have side effects.
-
16m 57s
Its side effects include high blood pressure,
palpitations, insomnia and urination trouble. -
17m 10s
Hyuga's team developed "ephedrine alkaloids-free Ephedra Herb extract," or EFE, to prevent side effects.
-
17m 18s
Her team tested EFE's effects against influenza, and discovered that it could suppress infection.
-
17m 29s
People assumed ephedrine alkaloids were responsible
for all of mao's benefits and side effects. -
17m 38s
Because of this, no one ever thought of
removing ephedrine alkaloids from mao. -
17m 47s
Without them, it was believed there would be
neither benefits nor side effects. -
17m 55s
But through our research, we discovered that
mao is effective even without ephedrine alkaloids. -
18m 06s
We therefore removed them
and started researching EFE. -
18m 14s
Hyuga's team investigated whether EFE had any effects on COVID-19.
-
18m 24s
When the team added a small amount of the coronavirus to a culture medium with cells in it, the virus infected the cells and multiplied exponentially.
-
18m 38s
The researchers tried adding EFE under the same conditions.
-
18m 45s
They confirmed EFE could suppress viral proliferation.
-
18m 50s
The blue graph indicates the amount of the coronavirus when EFE is absent.
-
18m 55s
The team found that a higher concentration of EFE led to a lower rate of viral multiplication.
-
19m 02s
But they discovered more than that.
-
19m 06s
I asked fellow researchers to test
EFE against coronavirus variants. -
19m 16s
They confirmed EFE is effective in
curbing the growth of variants as well. -
19m 24s
Hyuga's team investigated why EFE could prevent even mutated viruses from multiplying.
-
19m 31s
They found that a substance it contained, called "ephedra herb macromolecule condensed-tannin," or EMCT, was responsible.
-
19m 40s
It's a mixture of high-molecular
mass condensed tannins. -
19m 46s
Tannin, the astringent substance?
-
19m 48s
Yes, it's a type of polyphenol.
-
19m 54s
EMCT has a high molecular mass,
so it may have sites that can bind to proteins. -
20m 09s
EMCT is a very large molecule.
-
20m 12s
It comes in various complex structures, like puzzle pieces with numerous bumps and dips.
-
20m 19s
The researchers predicted EMCT can bind to coronavirus spike proteins.
-
20m 27s
The spike proteins are projections on the surface of the coronavirus.
-
20m 31s
They bind to receptors on cells' surfaces.
-
20m 35s
The spikes are like keys, and the receptors are like locks.
-
20m 40s
The virus uses its spikes to infect and enter cells, and multiply rapidly.
-
20m 49s
Because EMCT has such a complex structure, researchers believe it is able to fit spike proteins.
-
20m 56s
They believe EMCT binds to the spikes and prevents infection.
-
21m 07s
Viral mutations occur in the spike protein.
-
21m 11s
Even if the virus mutates, EMCT can still bind to it because it has other sites that can fit the spikes.
-
21m 23s
The research team conducted an experiment using human receptors and coronavirus spikes.
-
21m 29s
They usually bind to each other immediately.
-
21m 37s
However the researchers confirmed that the addition of EMCT inhibits the spikes from binding to the receptors.
-
21m 46s
They tested the efficacy of EMCT in various concentrations and discovered that even in low concentrations, EMCT can inhibit infection.
-
22m 00s
EMCT binds to spike proteins,
averting infection of healthy cells. -
22m 07s
That prevents severe symptoms.
-
22m 11s
The first few cells may be damaged,
but the healthy ones nearby are saved. -
22m 19s
It keeps the infection mild.
-
22m 25s
A clinical trial is underway on about 150 mild covid patients.
-
22m 32s
The research team aims to turn EFE into a scientifically proven medicine in the near future.
-
22m 43s
If the trial confirms that EFE is effective,
and it is approved as a drug, patients will be able to take it
without worrying about side effects. -
22m 57s
We hope that day will come quickly.
-
23m 01s
EFE could also be given as a preventive measure.
Patients in the early stage of infection can take it. -
23m 09s
So can family members and others
who've come in close contact. -
23m 14s
Taking EFE early may keep them from
getting infected or developing symptoms. -
23m 21s
Kitasato University has been doing a lot of researches in different areas.
-
23m 25s
How do you think it's gonna change perceptions going forward for Kampo medicine?
-
23m 33s
Kampo formulations and crude drugs contain
many substances that we are unaware of. -
23m 39s
They have huge potential, and
we'd like to explore them further. -
23m 46s
Instead of just passing on knowledge,
we should expand it for future generations. -
23m 53s
We want Kampo to be a
traditional medicine that keeps evolving. -
24m 09s
Today, we'll introduce a recipe for a juice using the leaves of red perilla, or "aka shiso."
-
24m 18s
Pharmacist Chiaki Ogata will explain how to make it.
-
24m 23s
So this is perilla herb.
-
24m 26s
Red perilla is coming into season.
-
24m 31s
It's obviously, we can't get it overseas.
-
24m 34s
So instead of perilla leaves or red shiso, or purple shiso, what else has the same compounds of similar compounds overseas?
-
24m 44s
Perilla contains rosmarinic acid.
-
24m 50s
This is also found in rosemary,
as the name suggests. -
24m 56s
Mint is in the same family as shiso,
so I suggest using that too. -
25m 05s
Red perilla seeds are available at major online retailers, so you can also try growing the plant yourself.
-
25m 15s
What is the medicinal effect of perilla herb?
-
25m 18s
Perilla has many effects.
It can bring about relaxation. -
25m 25s
It can also help to prevent colds.
It's included in Kampo formulations very often. -
25m 33s
When I was an exchange student in Kyushu in many many years ago, my grandmother, my homestay grandmother, she used to make shiso juice every summer.
-
25m 43s
I've never made perilla juice myself,
so I'm looking forward to it. -
25m 48s
First, let's wash the perilla leaves.
-
25m 58s
Next, put the leaves in boiling water, make sure they're submerged, and simmer them for 10 minutes.
-
26m 11s
Strain the liquid into a heat-resistant container with sugar.
-
26m 24s
Add vinegar and lemon slices, and it's done!
-
26m 30s
Store the juice in the refrigerator and finish drinking it within two weeks.
-
26m 37s
Such a beautiful color! Gorgeous!
-
26m 45s
Wow, delicious. Not too sweet, not too sour. For me this is perfect.
-
26m 49s
But I think for some people who don't like sour, probably less lemon and less vinegar and add a little bit more sugar.
-
26m 57s
Wow, this is so good! Getting relaxed already.
-
26m 59s
"Shiso" is written using two characters that
together mean "purple color revives." -
27m 13s
Drinking this will revive your body.
It provides power and energy. -
27m 20s
This is gonna be my favorite summer drink.
-
27m 23s
Red perilla juice will help you
get through the summer. -
27m 32s
Kampo is a medical science which is based on incredible history over thousands years.
-
27m 39s
And all the emerging research will certainly take Kampo medicine to a new level.
-
27m 45s
And I very much hope that many more people would be able to receive amazing benefits of Kampo medicine.
