This sumptuous wooden structure with a large tiled roof and guardhouses on both sides was the main gate of the residence of the Ikeda clan of feudal lords in Edo, the city that later became Tokyo. The design and structures of this scale were permitted only to lords of the highest status. The residence was dismantled and now, only the gate survives.
