SDF Base Plan Divides Islanders

Earlier this year, the Japanese government announced its official decision to build a military base on Mageshima, a largely uninhabited island in the country's southwest. It will be used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, but also for the US military to conduct aircraft carrier take-off and landing drills. The government hopes to start construction within the year, but the plan has drawn intense scrutiny from the residents of a nearby island, Tanegashima.
