RCEP Signals New Era for Global Trade

RCEP, a major regional trade pact, came into effect at the beginning of the year with China as a key member. But an expert tells NHK World's Yuko Fukushima that China's participation in such mega-groupings is unlikely to alter its basic approach to trade, including its strong support for state-owned firms. Paul Blustein of the Centre for International Governance Innovation expects China to continue going against the spirit of the international trading system with a policy of backing "various national champions at the expense of foreign competitors."
