Rate Hike Risks

As part of a series titled "Economic Focus 2022", this video features the US Federal Reserve. With inflation surging, the central bank is drawing down the easy-money policy it used to support the country during the pandemic. NHK World's Yanaka Marie asked four experts (Nomura Research Institute Executive Economist Kiuchi Takahide, Keio University Professor Shirai Sayuri, Mizuho Bank Chief Market Economist Karakama Daisuke, Columbia University Professor Ito Takatoshi) how the global economy will fare amid the Fed's actions. If the Federal Reserve hikes rates, some economists predict that there will be trouble in the markets, while others say it won't turn into a global financial crisis.
