Fukushima Pins Hopes on Good Fortune and Smiles

Fukushima Prefecture has long been known for its rice. But since the 2011 nuclear disaster, demand has dropped and so has the price that farmers get for their crops. The prefecture continues to conduct rigorous inspections for radiation, and since 2015 its rice has met the national safety standards. This year, the prefecture introduced a new strategy it hopes will allow rice farmers to compete with the rest of the country.
